Which Franchise Will Win The New-Look Contest: MGS or FF?

Both franchises are undergoing significant, if not radical, transitions. The question is, which one will survive the shift with its legacy intact?

One could argue that Final Fantasy 's legacy has already taken a beating, while Metal Gear Solid remains a revered and respected IP. On the other hand, let's not forget that a lot of hardcore stealth aficionados aren't the biggest fans of the new-look entry, The Phantom Pain .

Still, it seems like MGS's new open-world approach isn't receiving a fraction of the flak FF's approach is, possibly because FFXV is an even bigger departure from the franchise norm. When the dust settles, after FFXV and MGSV are on store shelves, what will we be saying? Will we be saying that FFXV has miraculously pulled that series back from the brink, and MGSV simply isn't as good as the previous entries? Or will it be simple; i.e., "MGS is still great; FF continues to slide"?

What do you think? People should be able to offer more educated opinions now that we have both the FFXV demo and Ground Zeroes available to us.

This would be fair if Kojima wasn't involved with MGS5 but since he is then MGS5 wins everytime.

I haven't played the FFXV demo, but I watched someone stream it on PS4. I was highly impressed with Ground Zeroes and FFXV isn't close to making Kojima sweat in my opinion.

MGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No question, because I know what you're thinking…

Every single FF fans loathed the new direction it's heading while MGS is still looking good for the fans despite a few criticism.
So asking which franchise will win the new-look contest is really a no-brainer.

Not this Final Fantasy fan. It was known from the start this wasn't your typical FF game. More like Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts. Why are people still pretending otherwise?

I can assure you not every single fan agrees with that. I played the demo and found it to be pretty fantastic.

I'm looking forward to FFXV and expect it to be fantastic. I am still a little remiss about the change in direction, and I was disappointed when the spin-off morphed into a new numbered title.

But it's not so much anger and resentment now as it is a single shed tear.

Kind of like the feeling Cloud must have felt at the end of Advent Children seeing Aerith and Zack symbolically fade into the lifestream, as displayed by them walking out the church door (By the way, amazeballs at her helping with the flowers with the same little girl I presume you saw tending the flowers in disk 2 or 3)… Happiness at the saving of so many children (a great title in FFXV) while an edge of sorrow at the reminder of losing something he cared for deeply (the old "archaic" battle systems).

Jawknee: My question is, why is everyone pretending that Final Fantasy XV is some sort of spin-off like Crisis Core?

IT'S NOT. It's a main franchise entry.

Lol So if they had left the title alone you wouldn't hate the game as much?

That makes total sense.

And I never said it was a Crisis Core "spin-off". Only that it wasn't a typical FF game LIKE Crisis Core or perhaps Kingdom Hearts(something Nomura stated from the beginning) and this transparent from the start. They didn't promose a traditional FF only to do a 180. Square renaming it to XV from Versus XIII doesn't change that fact.

Dumb question.

Of course it matters what you call it. If you make a third-person shooter and name it Call of Duty, you're opening yourself up for a world of hurt, and rightly so. The fans have a right to be annoyed because it's not what they like, and not what they paid their money for.

So yeah, if Final Fantasy XV was still called Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which implies a separation from the main series (like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, or Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, etc.), I wouldn't have as big of a problem. I still would have no interest in it, of course, but there is a significant difference in how a game is labeled.

MGSV will most likely be great. Haven't played a FF since XII so I couldn't say.

I really liked what I've played from the Duscae demo, but who knows what changes Square will implement after fan feedback they're asking for. MGS is MGS.

Final Fantasy 13 killed the franchise for me.
Dead in the water…

MGSV will be fantastic. A bit wary of the open world mindset though. I don't play Metal Gear for open world, I play it for story, sound, and gameplay.

Both are my fave franchises, but I think MGSV will end up with a better metacritic ratings than FFXV.

MGSV has showed more than FFXV so hard for me to tell right now. Both franchise are looking to stick to its core, apart from gameplay in FF and the open world in MGSV.

Sure we got the duscae demo for ffxv, but it was really limited in gameplay compared to what's in store. For MGSV, there have been many gameplay videos as well as the GZ demo itself. At this point, MGSV takes it, but really because it presented itself more, and probably cause it's more ready.

Ough! I can see why the Author hide their name on this one, how brutal! I'm sorry but I cannot decide between these two powerhouses. Both have so much to deliver and seem to really be at the top of their field. Admittedly I have more doubts with Final Fantasy XV due to not seeing much in the regards of story, but from playing the demo I am very convinced that it will be a stellar game. & The Phantom Pain, finally covering the story I have wanted to see since MGS3 10 years ago, the decay of Big Boss. It's going to be quite something. Both these games are in a superior ballpark to anything else right now. I simply can only choose both.

Metal gear solid 5: The Phantom Pain will, as i said before be one of the greatest games of all time, and is a definite contender for GOTY. The open world approach will not ruin the franchise because it's not an open world like GTA.Its more along the lines of massive non-linear levels that allow for multiple approaches. In my opinion this is the ultimate way to create a stealth game, and kojimas final and greatest hoo-rah.

ffXV has the possibility of being a GOOD game, possibly even great but it will not be a great FF game, not even in the top 5. Anyone who says Turn base battle systems are a thing of the past, i invite you to play Bravely Default. I feel square enix just doesnt know what Final Fantasy games are suppose to be, they have ripped out their roots and have spent years trying to revive a dead plant in a different climate, hoping the nice weather will make us all forget its a dead plant.

well i think MGS has a much more stable and positive track record than FF but then again FF has some very memorable titles like FF7 for example so its hard to say how its going to be after the dust settles what people are gunna think of FF or MGS

happy gaming
