PSXE Poll Update: Fans Expected The Order To Score Better

Well, duh.

It's no surprise to learn that most gamers thought The Order: 1886 would score better than it has.

In our most recent poll, we asked our community to predict the average review scores for the new PlayStation 4 exclusive. The majority guessed somewhere in the 8 range, while most others figured on a lot of 7s. In truth, unfortunately, the game currently holds an average Metascore of only 65, and it hasn't fared well at many of the major outlets. Whether or not we at PSXE agree with those negative assessments remains to be seen…review coming very soon.

This week, we stay with the most controversial game of 2015 thus far. The question now is: Do you think critics handled this game badly? Do you see too much subjectivity, too much bias, etc.? Or, do you think most of them are spot on? We're going to assume that you've played at least part of The Order before voting. 😉

Well it's still scoring better than Ryse and I don't think any critic has argued about how freaking gorgeous the game looks. Let's just view it as a tech-demo for what the PS4 is capable of.

Yes I think the really low ones are bogus. This game is an 8/10 for me. It could be so much more though, and I hope that they go all in in the sequel.

The critics/gamers giving bad reviews for it being short are the ones you don't trust.

I was expecting a lower score than is typical for a AAA game just based on the fact that it really wasn't being promoted very heavily, but this was surprising. It looks good but I'll have to play it just to see what the deal is.

I love how many people are bashing this game that never even played it….unbelievable.

The game is fantastic and took me 8 hours and 45 minutes on normal difficulty. On my second play through now trying to mop up the collectibles.

I had a lot of confidence in this game 6 months ago. As time went on I realized it was doomed as more and more it was either getting slammed or getting the weight of the world put on its shoulders (figuratively speaking).

I just had a feeling it was either going to be unfairly scored based on the negativity leading up to its release regardless of how ell it turned out. Or it would not live up to the expectations that the media put on it. Since the reviews have come out two things have surfaced and it's directly from the two things I mentioned.

I have not played The Order so I can't say if I disagree with any of the review scores. However I've read the reviews and I can and do question some of the thing I've read. When some reviews are praising it for the basis of it and others are not, I can't get on board with any of them. I've not been led in a direction in which I can draw a conclusion from any reviews without playing the game. That to me is a failure and shows the industry did handle this game badly. I've spoken more than enough about it but it's still a frustration when the reviews are there to give guidance and all I have (among others) as a consumer is contradicting and opinionated information. It's a joke. But this isn't the first time I've felt like this either and won't be the last I'm sure.

The important thing to remember for me is it's just a game and there's a lot of great websites out there. And if I can't trust the industry or media I can at least say there are a few websites who I believe have earned it in one way or another. I would just say for a process that's supposed to help consumers and maybe even provide some guidance, there needs to be more consistency and maybe even a better process considering the importance of reviews and popularity of the industry.

If you liked Heavy Rain, Uncharted, The Last of Us and a Game called Gone Home this is like the combination of all of those games. The gun play is for me just as good and smooth as Uncharted but the inaccuracy of the guns is more along the lines of The Last of us.

The quick time events are like Heavy Rains, and I didn't think there were that many of them.

You can pick up and examine the collectibles in the game and Gallahad will give some input on it, and if you pick up newspapers you can actually get close and read the hole article.

If you like how any of that sounds and were able to sit through the cutscenes in Metal Gear solid 4, then get this game you wont be disappointed.

I must admit. I didn't realize this game was anything like that until recently. And it sounds even more intriguing than just an action TPS. I'm confident I will like the game and by no means would I let an aggregate review score bring down a game I'm sure I'd like. I'd have bought it already but I purchased Evolve and the two Destiny dlc packs this week so I decided to hold off for a few days.

I don't mind cut scenes in fact I love cut scenes. I love the break from action and gameplay to see parts of the story unfold and interactions take place. All you did was solidify that I'll probably pick this up next week.

My point of the review scores is although I don't let them impact my purchase decision, admittedly. I can't stand to see a process that's supposed to be helpful and informational, become the opposite of that for whatever reason.

For the record, some of the cut-scenes in MGS4 were MUCH longer. I don't think I've come across one in The Order yet that's more than five or six minutes. Most are shorter. The idea that this is "more watching than playing" is just as stupid as it was all those years ago with the MGSs and FFs.

I would say ad much watching as playing and ff games have 40 hour + of gameplay so it s ok if there was 5 hour of watching in that time .

I agree Ben, never did I feel like the cutscenes were dragging on. I didn't time them or anything but I would say you hit the nail on the head none really go over 6 minutes. Plus what is going on in those 6 minutes is well told and interesting so it all went by fast for me.

I think the people who say this is more watching less playing don't count the chapters where you are just walking and taking in atmosphere and examining objects to be gameplay because you know you aren't pow pow shooty banging anyone….

That's my theory as well. And I think it's really sad that we've reached a point in this industry where walking around and exploring the environment, or simply taking in the sights (which are pretty incredible in The Order) isn't even considered part of a game's interaction.

I love this game. It is a gorgeous work of art with a great story so far. I think the majority of the critics are out for hits. My biggest question is this…..The game plays alot like an Uncharted game to me, gunplay, storytelling through cutscenes and overall beauty. Will these same critics lay down the same type of scores for Uncharted or give it great scores because it is an established series. Critics are a main reason developers don't put out more new IP's. Casual gamers look at Metascores for purchase worthy games. I, on the other hand, hardly ever agree with the majority of critics. Everything these critics are knocking The Order for is everything I love in a game and especially in my single player experiences. Ready At Dawn needs to know not all people suffer from ADD.

I thought it played like Uncharted also. With less monkey like climbing and swinging etc. T he gunplay and cover mechanics felt as smooth as a Drake and company shootout.

I think review scores are spot on and no, not because I'm mad it was short. Honestly, if anything, it was too long. Plus, they made the triangle button the star of the game. Press triangle to examine an object, open a door, pick up ammo, punch an enemy, move something, etc. Just so many triangle prompts in each chapter. I've got more buttons on my Dualshock 4, mix it up a bit in the sequel… if there is one.
And am I the only one who kept thinking I was playing as Captain Hook's twin brother the whole game?

When the prompt continually shows up on screen… yes sir.
Heavy Rain was all about examining items as well and never was it the same button over and over again. They mixed up the prompts and it made it a bit more engaging. Imagine pressing the same button for everything in THAT game.

Danny, Heavy rain was 100% QTEs it is expected that they change things up in that game and find creative ways to do things.

So Triangle was there action button….who cares? It wasn't like all the QTEs were just series of pushing triangle.

They seem to have wanted the QTEs to be consistent and memorable. Changing the QTE button after you fail can be most frustrating it is one of the complaints a lot of people have of QTE heavy games that have a small window of success.

Anyway it is your opinion but bashing a game for using Triangle…what review did you read that one from? Doubt you have played this game you sound like a troll, especially when you run to use the metacritic average as a crutch.

I have platinumed it, you can check out my PSN Xenris if you want to verify that I have played it.

Ben Dutka PSXE
Ben Dutka PSXE

You don't press the same button over and over in The Order. You only press Triangle when interacting with something. The actual QTEs – i.e., timed action sequences and combat – are all over the place; hell, I think they use every button on the controller (including the right analog stick at one point).

@Xenris Nigga please, you don't know what trolling is. I brought up the Metacritic score cause bigrailer19 was ATTEMPTING to be quick-witted. Calling me a troll for not liking the game is like calling you a Sony-fanboy for defending it. And gtfo of here with your PSN name. I have no problem believing your virgin ass stayed up all night to get the platinum.
I'm simply saying they could have mixed it up. It seems lazy that they didn't. Yes, every button is used, but no button is prompted more on screen than that button. Play it through a second time and count how many times you see it. I don't know about y'all, but even the fights with the werewolves were the same damn triangle button mixed in with the right analog stick. I don't know if it was supposed to be randomized and I got unlucky or what. If you were playing a drinking game for every time you saw the prompt, I'd guarantee you'd die of alcohol poisoning.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

I was simply asking a question. You said you agreed with the reviews, I was curious which of those you agreed with. Your answer was as vague as the aggregate score it's self.

Sheesh, that escalated quickly.

Ben Dutka PSXE
Ben Dutka PSXE

OMG, who CARES?

And saying all the fights with the werewolves are about pressing the Triangle button and the right analog stick is just plain wrong. The first one has you dodging incoming attacks (that's the X button) and then shooting at them (no Triangle there), the second one has you chasing a werewolf and then firing at him a split second before he kills Imogen, the third has you squaring off with an elder and that involves the right analog sticks to dodge and the trigger buttons to attack, etc. Should I go on?

The other action sequences have you pressing various face buttons because they're mapped that way on the screen (if it's on the left, it's Square, if it's down, it's X, etc.). Your complaint is not only completely trivial but it's also extremely inaccurate.

And calling someone a "virgin ass" when you have no clue what they've played or how long they've been playing is just plain dumb.

You brought up the average he asked which ones you agreed with, and you didn't answer you just said the average….

Second, I'm calling you a troll because your big complaint for the game was their choice in the action button. God of War uses R2 to open chests, doors, look at the environment, etc, it is the action button in that game did you think that game was lazy too?

Triangle is used as their action button, how would it have made the game any different if they switched it up? In the stealth segments for example if it was no triangle what button would they use, Square…nope that is reload, Circle…nope that is for getting into cover.

How about any other button being used when you run up to enemies in a gun fight to melee them? Literally every other button is used, so what do you want them to do here?

THAT is why you are a troll, because you had a problem with them having a button designated to actions whether it be in combat or environment examination.

The button for the werewolf fights depended on what area you pulled the reticule to, you had two targets body and head.

Calling someone a virgin on the internet are you 10?

DannyEndurance
DannyEndurance

I never said that was my biggest complaint. I hated the forgettable story and shitty characters even more. God Of War wasn't as vague as the Order, so no I don't think it was lazy in that game. And, I said clearly, I would have liked them to MIX IT UP. Especially since the gameplay was to continually prompt the player to do a bunch of complete shit. That's the fourth time I said it, did you get it now? If you like the game so much, go play it. I'm happy for you and your low standards. And finally, I'll call you a virgin all I want.

I can't search your name without the one and only suggestion I get being "Ben Dutka fanboy". Get the f*** out. Of course you're going to defend the game no matter what, so your opinion is irrelevant. It's a Sony exclusive, so you're going to fight to the death to defend it. Ain't nobody on your site can say s*** without you getting defensive and start crying. F*** off. Stay hidden will you, please? God knows you'll never show your ugly a** face to anyone. Keep that PS3 as your facebook profile pic, we all know it's prettier than yourself. Yeah, sure you don't use it anymore, why would you when you have no friends and nobody outside of the internet can stand to be around you?Everyone you can't stay away from lashing out on in YOUR OWN comments section knows what you're about… sleeping with your PlayStation next to you at night. I see this unprofessional lashing far too often to take you seriously. And, please tell me how I'm getting owned? It's not my fault y'all can't read carefully and have your a**es so far up a game's ass cause it's an exclusive. I don't try squeezing my d*** into my PS4's disc tray

So you are 10, this whole conversation makes sense.

Story is a subjective element, the characters were interesting, but again subjective.

Wait one minute you said all you had to do was press triangle, next you are saying the Order is vague, vague in what its quick time events or story telling?

If you inspect all the items, and listen to the audio log it greatly expands on the story.

I clearly said that they couldn't mix it up because the buttons are already mapped to something else, and the QTE events are mapped to the side of the screen in which they appear which isn't always triangle.

So you would like them to make is so chapter 1 when you are walking it is triangle, then next chapter where you do no combat they switch it to circle just for the heck of it, and so on and so on….you obviously have no idea how programming works, and again this is such a silly complaint.

I did play it, I was at work for the past 6 hours.

You can call someone over the internet a virgin all you want, it just makes you look like a complete fool.

Oh and FYI you comment on a thread for all to respond to so you technically indirectly asked Ben. He isn't a fan boy, yes he prefers Sony but he appreciates good games regardless of platform.

I think they botched it with all the bad mojo in the air.

However, it is a very different sort of game. It isn't the kind that is for everyone to like. It sort of takes the time to insult you over and over again whenever you expect it to cater to your needs. It leaves you hanging, doesn't tell you exactly where to go, and generally it doesn't care about you or whether or not you are interested in it, it just keeps on going. If you can get aboard and have a brain you'll enjoy the ride, if not you'll get annoyed and walk away.

The TPS is the smoothest responsiveness I've played, but the AI is bad and the cover can be sticky.

The best word for it is unique. Truth be told though, I'd have actually left it in the cooker to make it user friendly to clinch the 9 scores. Being cheeky is what's hurting it, the flaws are things that are overlooked in other AAAs but get highlighted here because the game slaps you around so much.

I've spent the weekend playing. I've enjoyed my time (i haven't beaten it yet) I honestly think people & reviewers aren't sure what to do with it. In an age where every games is either a multiplayer game, multiplayer with a small campaign, or 50/50. A Solid single player campaign is sort of the pink elephant in the room.

Its been some time since we've had a stand alone single player. For all the ruckus caused by this game both good and bad. People, i think, want to like it. Is it reinventing the wheel? No. But it tells an interesting story, graphics are top notch, and controls feel smooth. However, its the flaws that are bringing it down, in a grandiose kind of way. I think that if the video hadn't been released and the suddent sh**storm of "zomg.. 5 hrs and its all cutscenes" the Order would have been well received. Of course the minors flaws that we all know now, would not have been judged as harshly.

I'm generalizing, but gamers like a good game. I never said it was great. But its good. It pulls you in , and you have fun saving the day. Frankly I don't mind the cutscenes, the QTE's and the tps. Its all rather enjoyable. To a certain extend its kind of refreshing.

The game has the same thing Dying Light had. No reviewer liked it, and claimed it was the same thing as Dead Island but with shoddy, bad parkour. When that is the furthest thing from the truth.

Gamers on the other hand, love it. People who have played through it don't seem to have much bad to say about it. Wonder why this is becoming a thing though.

Ben Dutka PSXE

It's really not the same thing at all. Dying Light has a series of issues The Order does not and vice versa. To compare the two just because of the similarity in review scores is wrong.

In my opinion:
PS exclusive portrays itselve as revolutionary. In addition it becomes known it won't revolutionize gameplay and is rather short/In come the xbox and pc gamers who will now automatically bash it for.. reasons. Part jealousy, I suppose. Even a lot of PS fans will jump on the bandwagon because people like to bitch.
Now it's time for the reviews. What do review sites care more about? Stating opinions that aren't mainstream or views and clicks? Views and clicks obviously. And what do all those haters want to read? That the game sucks.
And there you go.

Yeah i know there's more to it than that. But, apart from reviewers, most people who played the game seem to enjoy it. But I guess hearing about a short playthrough on youtube is a better foundation for forming an opinion than actually playing the game..

Gamers need to do a better job of researching what type of game it is. This is not difficult because of the Internet. This is a story driven linear experience third person shooter with no replay value. It clocks in at about 7-8 hours. There are a lot of cut scenes to enhance the story and immerse the player and there are QTEs segments as well. If you like games like this, you should most likely enjoy the game. If not, look elsewhere.

From what I've read I'm looking forward to playing this game, but as I'll likely only play through it once, I can't justify the price tag. When the price drops significantly I'll pick it up.
