Advanced Warfare Shut Out At D.I.C.E., Sledgehammer “Hurt”

This year's D.I.C.E. Awards have been handed out but one developer isn't happy with the results.

While games like Dragon Age: Inquisition , Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Destiny did well at the event, Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare simply wasn't a factor.

The well-received shooter was nominated for Action Game of the Year, Outstanding Character (Jonathan Irons), Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, Outstanding Technical Achievement, and Outstanding Achievement in Online Play, but it didn't win any of these categories. Now, Sledgehammer boss Glen Schofield is a little frustrated; as he said on Twitter :

Do you think Advanced Warfare should've won at least one of those awards for which it was nominated?

although AW did some good things to revitalize a series that was heading downwards, doesn't mean it's worthy of awards. I would say it was one of the better games last year but it certainly is only because of a year that many claim is a dissapointment. Again not making it worthy of any awards.

Do something completely new and you might get some awards. Improve on a game that's been around since the beginning of last gen, every year, don't expect much.

Maybe there should be an award for come back game of the year?

And best believe that it would hurt more if the franchise didn't sell well or meet their expectations

You got point on that, new dev.

bah. Whatever. CoD AW was a good CoD game. But the thing boils down to being another twist on a well tread formula. Many competitive games eventually step down from out of the limelight and finds their place within their competitive community, where the franchise long since stopped pushing boundaries. Pleasing their base means not making big changes because big changes usually means changing the game. And changing a game to form we haven't experienced is where praise comes from in this industry. You can only please both for so long.

While Destiny didn't score as high, I'd take the 10 of the 70 or so hours I had with that over the 10 hours or so hours I had with AW any day.

Picked up AW on the cheap. While the Exo suit(Elysium clone) is cool the MP is still way too twitcy and the hit detection is crap. There are times you'll unload on a guy and he'll kill you in one shot. Then you watch in the kill cam and it shows you didn't even fire a shot. And it's not my internet because I'm playing on a 50mbps connetion. This was a problem in BF4 too at first but it's been fixed. Battlefield 4's online owns AW. Oh and it has texture loading problems. Sometimes it takes half a match for the textures to fully load.

Yeh picked up aw and it did do a few good new things such as looking damn good on ps4 and having a pretty solid campaign. In the mp it just feels the same except it became even more twitchy and fast because of the jump packs. Bf4 even with its few problems at launch has far better mp and is great to play with friends.

Jawknee it isn't always how fast your internet is it's where you are in the world compared to who you are playing against and the inherent Ping between you that is most important.
You could have really great internet but if you are on the other side of the world compared to everyone else in a match your performance is going to suffer greatly.

Shaun, this problem doesn't occur in Black Ops 2 on Wii U nor does it occur anymore in BF4. I think it has more to do with the game than it does my location vs someone else's. Something is wrong with the game and you can hear others with mics complain while they're playing. Makes no sense that one can burst fire 5 to 10 rounds into a guy center mass and he doesn't go down. Same with head shots. You tag a guy 2 or 3 times in the dome and all it does is alert him so he can turn around and kill you with less accuracy.

Godslim, I dig the Exo. strafe dodging is pretty sweet. I think much of the twitcy feel could be alleviated with bigger maps and better spawn points. I find that it spawns me right next to an opponent far too often. And the small maps make it way too easy to get tagged in the back. I remember the developer bragged about how great the map designs were. Some are okay. Many aren't.

Personally the map a designs in AW are terrible. They easily could be some of the worst because of their size. The layouts just don't work well for the map sizes. You always spawn next to someone like you said.

Otherwise I love the game. It brought back fond memories of MW and that's why people are liking it so much. But I wouldn't sit here and say it deserves any awards.

Yea the maps are pretty lame. I also don't like the weapon variety. Not enough pistols and there really only two good rifles. Sub machine guns are meh and the heavy machine gun is underpowered and has terrible iron sites. Feel like they tried to get rid of quick scoping with the sniper rifles but failed.

The best set of weapons were both in MW and MW2. MW balanced everything really well while the problem in MW2 was the incredibly unbalanced double shotguns that ruined any credibility. But MW2 definitely had the best lineup had there been no balancing issues.

You are right AW has some of the worst guns and I believe it's because of the map design. If you can use an smg really well you will have lots of success. They are really he only weapons suited for these maps with maybe the exceptions of shotguns. The assault, Heavy and sniper classes are not suited for these maps they all benefit from larger open areas which are almost non existent in AW. So i agree with you on that.

McDonald's is really popular too, but that doesn't mean it deserves awards.

When I read the headline I thought they didn't even get nominated at first. That would be getting snubbed. I like AW a lot, but there were arguably better games in every one of those categories.

They probably could have actually won (deserved) at least one of those awards, but, hey, getting nominated was actually a pretty great award in itself.

sad, but I can't say it's award worthy….how many times have you seen a 5th sequel in Hollywood garner an Academy award, let alone a nomination. Heck, they should just be relieved they were nominated, but as a gamer it's a bit disheartening that it was…because it just goes to show how limited our selection can Be!
