The Order: 1886: Does Anyone Know What To Expect, Really?

This is one of those rare times when I honestly believe gamers are at a loss.

Sure, you've got your faithful, excited contingent that believes The Order: 1886 will be a proper first-party PlayStation masterpiece. Then you've got your confirmed skeptics, who were the first to jump on the "it's just a generic TPS" bandwagon (if they'd only just admit it).

But above all else, I think there are gamers who really don't have any idea what to expect. They have hopes, of course, but the result is a total crapshoot. I'm in this group as well: While I have confidence in just about any new PlayStation exclusive that comes down the pike, it's hard to be overly confident for The Order . Ready at Dawn made some fine PSP titles but they're not exactly proven in the realm of big-budget console productions. Furthermore, while I've heard a lot of what the developers are promising for the game, I haven't seen much of it.

This one could end up being a total flop. I have a sneaking suspicion that the environment could feel flat, the gameplay could be repetitive and unrewarding, and any new elements they attempt won't quite work, resulting in an uneven, ultimately unimpressive game. That's a worst-case scenario, though, and there's always the possibility that this is a AAA gem. I'm simply not willing to predict one way or the other and I know I'm not the only one.

I think it definitely fits the early criticism of being Sony's version of Gears of War, but set in an old alternate reality England.
I'm not expecting the great story telling like in TLoU (I finished it last night for the first time woot!) but I'm expecting a great technical presentation, maybe the best, with great graphics and sound, and just an all around dramatic and memorable experience. I think it fits the bill nicely for this phase of the console's life cycle and it's a welcome addition to a somewhat deprived feeling generation lacking a wealth of new and exclusive ips.

I hope it's much less stereotypical than TLoU.

What did you find to be stereotypical about TLoU?

Yes, that sums up my feeling. I'm not sure what to expect, I'm hoping it's more than Gears of War in a new coat. The last E3 trailer showed us a moment of tension, where a beast was lurking in the shadows to try hunt you down which seemed great. But yes, I want more than a corridor shooter. I'll be looking out for the reviews on this one as I am just not sure on it yet.

Seems like your expectations are at an all time low Ben. Keep em' that way and you might just be blown away come the 20th… (fingers crossed)
I'm expecting a GOTY contender. This is the one game in 2015 I'd pick if I could only get one.

Wow danny, that is saying quite something. Especially when you consider the heavy hitters scheduled to drop this year like the Witcher 3, Arkham Knight, Uncharted 4, the Phantom Pain of the world. The Order does seem to me like it could be a 2015 sleeper hit.

How exactly are my expectations at an "all-time low" when I just said explicitly that I'm on the fence?

I'm going to gamble on it being fantastic and I do think it will be fantastic. If it is a flop that might not be because it isn't good though, could be bad, skeptical gamers. I just think like, I have no idea how you show in a trailer an awesome promise kept. It just looks good, if high quality cinematic shooting with creative storytelling has become generic then Uncharted is in trouble too.

I look forward to Ben's review.

I'm sure the game will be enjoyable no matter how "bad" or how much of a rip off it is of other TPS games.

I'm sure it will be polished and at the very least its going to be a technical show case for the PS4.

I mean I was one of the few who liked Knack and that was a by the books platformer.

I am hoping however that this game has some gameplay variety and isn't just stop and pop gunplay with some quick time events thrown in here and there.

If that is what I get I'm sure it will still be fun to play through once, but I will always be wondering in my head what the game could have been had there been more effort put into the gameplay elements.

Looking forward to it. May wait for a price reduction though. I love the theme and the cutscenes, will wait and see about the gameplay.

Don't expect to much from this game, or you will disappointed, this another tech demo game that showing off the ps4 graphic capabilites with generic gameplay and stale QTE…

Bias critics will bash this game to the core though.
Critics in the US do that most of the time to PS exclusive games and I don't see why 1886 will be any different seeing that it doesn't have multiplayer.

If this game were not an exclusive I am pretty sure most would have ignored this game completely at current stage.

It may still surprise, by all means, but the only reason it got as much attention as it has is all due to being an exclusive. There's very little of what we've seen so far that makes it stand out.

Being an exclusive is pretty much what gives any game the edge. That little extra care bumps everything over the top and makes really good simply stunning.

… And that's what gives people hope. But there really isn't much of what we've actually seen who warrant a high degree of enthusiasm.

how often has a trailer really made you think a game looks different from others? Ya gotta have the experience in your hands.

lol@Temmy

Well yeah NMS is an obvious example, but then again that game is so unique that it's almost unfair to compare.

But man there's been many good trailers over the years, World. The Last Of Us trailers were excellent, the first ME3 trailers sent shivers down my spine, GTA trailers have albeit been traditional but very interesting, Bioshock had some *excellent* trailers, and who will ever forget the first and utterly unrelated Dead Island trailer?
Or the trailers for the latest Thief? They were fantastic. Or how about the trailers for Far Cry over the years? Excellent stuff.

Heck, even the trailers for the Borderlands *expansions* makes more of an impression than what we've seen from The Order so far. And since The Order is a cinematic, story driven game their trailers *should* be smashing.

@Beam

The only trailers we had from The Order so for are sneek peeks and 1 or 2 extended TPS action scenes. IMO they are showing the bare minimum in order to keep gameplay features and story a secret. I'm personally glad that they haven't shown much in order to keep things fresh when we get the game in our hands.

Thats the biggest downfall of the movie industry, where they show all the biggest moments during the previews and trailers, then you finally see the flick and none of the biggest moments are surprising. I feel as I by the time the trailer is over, I already saw they movie.

The back drop of The Order is in a way really unique. Alternate reality Paris featuring supernatural and human enemies and a SteamPunk setting? If they gameplay is anything like the graphics, I don't see why everyone shouldn't be excited.

It's very rare that we see gameplay footage that looked more boring than the game itself turned out to be, PS3_Wizard.
So your stance is the overly optimistic one, the kind that would be optimistic regardless of what they see or don't see. You need no promotional material to be excited. And that's fair enough, long live optimism. 🙂

I do recommend you to not pre-order this one though, but see what the verdicts of the reviewers are.

Maybe we will someday see:

The Order: 1986

Which will also be a bad title but may mean we will continue in the Assassins Creed fashion. Game is still mostly a mystery.

I wonder if this game will have an embargo on reviews or will we know what to expect before release? I am stoked for this one, but yes i have my doubts.
What I have seen of gameplay looks decent, the cutsceens look amazing, but hey that is just a cutsceen. How does it play?

Ben, please let us know if you are aware of a review embargo on this one as it is definitely wetting my appetite.

Sounds like Uncharted, no offense. I just feel Uncharted is overrated here.

I think the game will offer meaningful story. Just hope that the complaints about the mechanics aren't as bad as it's made out to be.

i know it could go one way or the other but i just want to be optismitic cos i like the look of it and it seems like the sort of game i'd have a blast with so i'm being optimistic but i know its 50/50 in reality and it could go either way so heres hoping its awsome
