In The Year Of The Remaster, Which Was The Absolute Best?

Yes, it's unfortunate that many of 2014's best games were all redone, overhauled, retooled versions of older games.

But rather than whining about it, let's just ask: Which of these re-releases was the best?

Was it The Last Of Us: Remastered , with its fantastic visual upgrade and inclusion of awesome DLC? Some say we didn't need it; that Naughty Dog should've been focusing on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End this whole time but really, are we going to complain? Or was it Grand Theft Auto V in all its expanded glory on the new consoles? Then again, there are some action/adventure aficionados who are always partial to Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition , which was indeed the best version of Lara's successful reboot.

Old-school role-playing fanatics will immediately point to Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster ; a production that allowed us to revisit the glory days of JRPGs with a beautiful high-def update. And even though it isn't really a remaster, the Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition on PlayStation 4 was indeed an upgraded version of a 2013 title. So, which one gets your vote? Or is there one we didn't mention that you especially like?

It would seem to me as far as effort goes, TR DE or GTAV would be the best in terms of improvement over the original offering. I can't speak for Diablo though.

nice Avatar. I saw some PS4 TR DE images versus PC, it definitely can't just be called the PC version on consoles.

Thanks. And yep. It was quality. Though I now realize other remasters did more to bundle content and stuff outside of cosmetic improvements. Didn't TR DE release for $60 too?

Yeah and I paid it to support the franchise, then they go and take it from me and give it to Microsoft. That's gonna hurt sales imo, it'll be a point of anger and older game when it does come to us asking for a full price.

I would have to say GTA V was the hands down best re-master. The original game was easily one of the top games of 2013, but what the new version does with improved textures, weather effects and lighting is amazing. Not only that but they've added so much gameplay in terms of new features such as first-person mode, the peyote challenges and Michael's murder mystery that it blows the mind.

I loved TLOU on PS3 and loved it again on PS4.

But the best remaster for me was Metro Redux. Two great games, the first one wasn't available for PS and a great price.

BTW Metro is part of the last week of christmas deals on PSN, so do yourself a favor and grab it

outside of improved lighting model and 60fps boost did Metro's remake do?
I read something about updating the first game's AI and stuff to that of the second but that's about all I saw.

When I think of remaster quality I think of the effort that took it beyond the original offering.
I look at it like this:

Improved Lighting Model and shader work:
TR DE: Yes. Significantly. all new lighting. completely new shader effects for blood splatters and sweat etc.
TLoU: Yes. Moderately. improved light model. not much by way of brand new rendering effects
GTAV: Yes. Significantly. Saw screens of much improved shader effects on ocean water and a whole new lighting model.
Metro: Yes. Significantly

Improved Texture work:
TR DE: Yes. Significantly (re-created most every texture in the game from scratch i think)
TLoU: Yes. Moderately (grabbed higher res bitmaps before the heavier compression to PS3 memory was applied. mild to moderate touch up work).
GTAV: Yes. Moderately (same as TLoU)
Metro: Yes. Significantly?

Improved Models (mesh geometry and environment complexity)
TR DE: Yes. Significantly (completely re-done face and other elements of stages)
TLoU: Yes. Moderately? I believe draw distances increased. I can't confirm anything else.
GTAV: Dont know
Metro: Don't know

Performance Increase:
TR DE: Yes. Moderately. It may be 60 but it's real uneven. I wish there were a 30fps lock.
TLoU: Yes. Significantly. Real smooth 60fps almost all the time
GTAV: Yes. moderately? i read it's just a more stable 30.
Metro: Yes. significantly. I read 60fps. Not sure how stable.

Content and value Offering:
TR DE: Yes. minimally. Very little other than costume DLC I think.
TLoU: Yes. Moderately. Added the DLC story stuff. a camera mode. probably some multiplayer stuff too. $50
GTAV: Yes. Not sure. $60
Metro: Yes. Significantly. They added the whole first game that never released PS-side. and wasn't the whole thing just $40?

Presentation (load times, bugginess etc. effort)
TR DE: Can't really remember. DIdn't seem bad. Can't recall major patches.
TLoU: Yes. Moderately. They went back and recaptured the FMV story cutscenes at 60fps at 1080p. (this effort is rare)
Long crappy first time game load is still present. I remember something about a fairly important day one patch.
GTAV: no idea
Metro: no idea

They didn't just update 2033 they redid the whole game in Last Light's engine if I recall correctly.

That's a hell of a lot more work than most remasters can claim.

Was one of the few that loved the Ninja Gaiden games, was completely insulted by the garbage that was ninja gaiden 3 though, didnt even pick up razors edge, would love a remake of the previous ones before sigma though to see what it was like

hey, if you really liked the core playing mechanic of NG2 then definitely try NG3 Razors Edge.
It's combat system is well thought out and nicely different than the prior NG's. I'm real sensitive to changes to such areas and it managed to make itself different without ruining it's dynamic playing standard. Ayane and Kasumi are a real treat to play as well.

Not much can be said for the lacking graphics, some retarded bosses, some weaker level and enemy designs, a soundtrack that felt off, and Ryu hopping off into the city like Spiderman to close out the game. But if you're a NG fan, there should be enough about Razor's Edge to make it worth your while.

Ayane and Kasumi are always a treat, even just to look at. Kasumi needs her own action game, why don't they do obvious money makers like that?

I haven't played any of the PS3 to PS4 re-releases but Final Fantasy X & Kingdom Hearts II.5 both look sensational, really happy with both of them. I wont be buying any PS3 to PS4 re-releases any time soon, as they're already HD on my PS3, I'm content with that for now, but I will get them when the price drops considerably.

Tomb Raider was mide twice as better but the Final Fantasy X one brought the magic of yesteryear back to life and that makes it the winner over.

Easily FFX HD. All the other games already looked great. Replaying PS2 FFX on a big screen tv really made the game show it's age.

I wouldn't have purchased any of the other Remasters if I already owned their originals. I do own FFX for PS2 and I didn't even have to think about buying FFX HD. For PS3 and Vita…

Also, I think an honourable mention is in order for Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter 😉

looking at some of the background environment textures in FFX HD was eye opening, I realized they were crisper and clearer than many PS3 game textures.

No kidding. I remember how amazing the game looked the first time I played it. It was nice to get that same feeling, from the same game, over a decade later.

I'm still working on that platinum… It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.

It's gonna be kinda cool to have Lock-on in DmC, and of course the old Dante looks.

As far as remakes goes. I say the best two are Metro Redux and Tomb Raider definitive edition.
