Oh Great, Now Guardian Is Being Made “Under New Conditions”

'sigh' What now?

Unfortunately, after years of such vague updates, it's really the only reaction we can muster.

The Last Guardian was a no-show at yet another industry event last weekend (PlayStation Experience), and there might be a reason for that. I mean, a reason beyond the standard, "it isn't ready yet."

According to this week's Dengeki PlayStation issue (as translated by Kotaku ), game director Fumito Ueda said the game is now moving forward under "completely new conditions."

"Talks with Sony Computer Entertainment on The Last Guardian have been ironed out, and we're making progress under completely new conditions. I'm also working on some other things that I'll hopefully be able to show in time if progress is smooth."

That is not the update we were hoping for. Ueda didn't clarify the "new conditions" phrase but it's feasible that he's talking about a transition from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4. It's a little ridiculous to think Guardian isn't being made for PS4 by this point, especially considering that it won't be ready for a while.

Anyway, it doesn't sound like we'll be seeing the game any time soon, regardless of intended platform. So really, what else is new?

Meh… this is exactly why I said I wouldn't narrow down the success of Sonys latest show based on this game appearance. It's pretty much off the radar at this point.

If this game doesn't come out on PS4 all I have to say is… forget about it.

I think there might be something in the translation. 'New conditions' can mean many things… new team members, new console (ps4 only?), new deadlines, etc.

Best wait for Ueda/Sony to clarify before we all freak out. lol

We have to take into account under what context the "new conditions" line was used.

He said that they're making progress under completely new conditions.

IMO the higher ups at Sony have set up a specific chart that will record the progress of the game. That chart probably includes several deadlines that the development team has to meet. If they miss any of the deadlines, the development of the game ends.

I am hoping that Sony are implementing those type of new conditions. Because the way Ueda was working on the game before (It'll be ready whenever I say its ready a.k.a. NEVER) just won't cut it anymore.

Is that suppose to be sarcasm? Aren't you at least happy that it isn't cancelled anymore?

I think new conditions is that they probably have a roadmap now and deadlines.

I love Fumita Ueda but holy crap this guy is an OCD perfectionist, Sony had to force him to release Shadow of the Colossus and he wasn't happy with it releasing when it did I read in an interview.

He also had to cut stuff out etc.

My hope is that they ported to the PS4 and we can see something next year at e3.

I'm still excited for this game and believe it will be released, most people thought I was naive to believe FFversus13 would ever release but I had faith and was right about that, hopefully thats the case here too 🙂

This news is better than it being cancelled.

I challenge the idea that Ueda is really working on it since he hasn't worked there for so long. I think it's just lost in "Where the heck is this game going? land.

New conditions isn't an update, gamers deserve and can handle a report on the status of the game. It doesn't help the game, the dev, or the publisher to just go radio silent for years.

Honestly have no interest in this game at this point. Seems like they should just can and start something else.

It almost sounds like they did just under the same name…

Last Guardian: now a free to play, episodic, top down adventure. Sony's not taking the risk unless they can package it in some sort of Hollywoodery. Shu has been dropping hints with his comments about only 30 percent of the AAA turning a profit and not understanding the demand for AAA over indie. This is not the truly daring Sony of old. Basically, the tech race has backed these companies into a corner. Besides Nintendo, who can release a relativey inexpensively developed Pokemon and sell nearly 4 million in a week. Sony and MS would beat every member of this site to death with a bag of partially ripe mangoes to have that sort of profitability.
