Study: About 20 Percent Of All Destiny Sales Were Digital

I suppose it depends on how you interpret this news.

According to a SuperData Research study , one in every five copies sold of Destiny was a digital copy.

That's 20 percent, which is significantly higher than the average split, which is currently about 12 percent. Overall, digital console sales have reached $96 million and the digital game market expanded 12 percent in comparison to October 2013. Here's a statement concerning the holiday season:

"For the holiday season we conservatively forecast the share of direct-to-consoles downloads of full games to double, as consumers seek to avoid the inconvenience of having to wait for delivery or stand in line. That said, GameStop has so far proved to be well-positioned to capture a piece of this uptick in digital games revenue. We do, however, anticipate lower-than-expected game sales over the winter break for online retailers like Amazon."

So, does this mean digital is expanding faster or slower than you believed? Is 20 percent a big deal for Destiny sales? Again, it's all in how you interpret the data.

If this was PC I'd say those number are nothing special but this is consoles we're talking about and I believe 20% is a huge number. Did anyone here go the digital route? If so why and are you happy that you did?

Did you hear about the Amazon distribution center that is opening by us? I don't think they are expecting anything to be slow.

I think people went digital on this one because they offered the buy ps3 and get ps4 with it. Those that had not got ps4 yet would have it when they did. You weren't getting that deal with physical. makes sense that 1/5 would go that route.

YES! Funny you mention it. I drive most weekends into Chicago so I've been watching that facility slowly being built on 94. A little over a month ago I was driving by and saw the Amazon banner draped over the side and was happy as a peach. I buy something from Amazon at least once a week, can't beat the promotions and 2 day shipping.

My buddy works for a contracted company going to the Amazon building. It's actually 2 buildings. One is finished, the other still bring wired and finished. He tells me there is a massive tunnel between the buildings big enough for trucks. I'm excited for it to open

I wasn't aware it was two building, that's crazy. The building closest to 94 is enormous. It might be the biggest building I've ever seen built. I'd like to check out that tunnel. Do you know when it's supposed to open? I'm looking forward to the benefits (us as consumers) see from these buildings.

I went digital for the exact reasons frylock mentions. Destiny and AW are the only games I have purchased digitally, as I really like having a physical collection of all the games I've played and never trade them in or sell any. So far I'm finding everything about digital more convenient except the fact that I can't take it to a friends house. Overall I'd say I'm happy with both the purchases. Being able to play the game I'm working on, and then switch quickly to an AW multiplayer match without getting up and messing with disks, is more convenient than I originally would have thought. I always thought that you would have to be extremely lazy to get a digital title just for that reason, but now I might consider buying the games I play mainly for the multiplayer digitally, just so I can switch to it faster when I get game invites from my clan. I still prefer my physical collection, but I still buy CDs too so I guess I'm just reluctant to change.

Lv I'm not sure but I know they are training people right now and people have started. It's all seasonal work right now. You should add me on psn

Mk when mag came out digital I did the same thing. I prefer physical but it was nice when I wanted to jump between games quickly. I gave away my physical copy since the game was little more than an unlock key. Now that the servers are shut down the is no point in owning a useless disc.

Thanks for the response. PC side I'm all about digital games. But on consoles I only own a couple digital games.

Then a large number of those people began swearing they would never do a PSN pre-order again after it was revealed the "Play at midnight" only applied to Pacific time.

Meeh to Digital sales. What will happen if the Network goes down again for lets say another 1-2 months. What happens when u cant access them. All of this is reason why i stick to discs

Destiny REQUIRES a network connection to be played. Your saved game is stored on THEIR servers.

I went digital because I knew I felt it was time. Unfortunately, I bought it a week before they announced the PS3/PS4 deal or I would have jumped on it. Like Frylock mentioned, I'm sure that had something to do with these numbers also. Still it is something the industry should take note of. Until they can start releasing digital games for noticeable less than physical copies (and I understand why they simply can't right now), they need to use incentives like this.

I think it is more so the fact that Destiny Digital Guardian Edition was so heavily marketed. Not only was it digital, but it gave you the expansion pass and other DLC.

Basically the same price as retail, but with extra stuff. So it was hard to say no to it.
