Ubisoft Explains The No Respawn Rule In Rainbow Six Siege

Dying and respawning in multiplayer shooters is pretty standard.

There are hardcore games out there where death is actually punished, but that wouldn't work in the online FPS sphere, right?

Well, Ubisoft Montreal is going to give it a try with Rainbow Six Siege . During multiplayer matches, you will have only one life. That's right, one life. If you die, you won't be able to play again until the next round begins, and the developer has explained their approach in a new blog post :

"When designing the game, we found that above all else, the No Respawn rule touched the three main pillars of what we want in this game: teamwork, tactics, and tension. Not only are these three pillars at the heart of Tom Clancy's video game series, but they’re arguably absent from the FPS market today. Even when playing on a team, run and gun titles emphasize twitch reflexes while neglecting other skill sets, and you may feel disconnected from the action and all alone in your plight. With Siege, that's not the case."

Ubisoft said they experimented with repeated respawning in an earlier build of the game, but this allowed strong solo players to carry a mediocre team. The No Respawn rule forces everyone to contribute and as the devs say, "twitch reflexes aren't the only skills that keep you alive." Game designer Chris Lee admitted that at first, they didn't think this could work, because it would only appeal to the hardcore gamer. However:

"It turned out that it really opened up the game to many different types of players. The developers who were longtime FPS players initially found it difficult because they were only good at reaction time. They weren't communicating, playing tactically, or thinking about the consequences. Their K/D ratio was high before, but after introducing One Life, they stopped thinking about K/D ratios and more about how each player could work together for the win."

Ubisoft believes that an adventure feel is more important, and works better than a run 'n gun setup. After all, this is Tom Clancy and it makes more sense. By the way, when you die in Rainbow Six Siege (set to come out next year), you'll enter a Support mode, where you can use visibility tools such as drones and security cameras. This will keep you in the loop even if you're not directly participating in the action.

So, what do you think?

Love it! I always loved the no respawn matches in SOCOM. Makes for more stealth and tension!

With fps games i notice this type of thing creates a sit in the corner for half the match type scenario

Bloody good – no-respawn is pretty much a must for small scale tactical shooters (personally I'd be happy for large scale as well, and am a big fan of it in War Thunder realistic/sim mode to boot). It's not new, necessarily – counter-strike is generally no-respawn, and SOCOM's no-respawn online was an institution back in the PS2 days – but it's great to see it coming back, my interest in this game just doubled :).

I agree because I loved the Siege mode in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, so this should be fun.

But I'm still bitter over the fact that they cancelled Rainbow Six: Patriots, that game was looking so amazing.

While this sounds good in theory, in practice it's going to be hell for players who aren't playing with their own team of friends or "clan" and just dropping into matches. Unless they separate the drop ins from the "clans" this game is going to be very frustrating for a lot of people.

Also why can't they do what every other FPS shooter does and have separate game modes, one with no respawns and one with.

Because that would separate the community. They probably want to keep everyone together.

Honestly Counter Strike has had no respawn in its main mode since 1999, and it works great.

CS just recently added a deathmatch mode but not many people play it.

Why would anyone play a "team tactical" shooter without a solid group of friends anyway? If nobody on your list plays the aforementioned game type, then hit some online fan sites to recruit a solid group.

Looking forward to this game a lot.

Everytime I hear something new about this game, it just sounds better and better. This news should help me get some of my search and destroy clan from CoD to get this game. I greatly prefer shooters with as little health as possible, with no respawns. The original RS, CS and hardcore SnD on CoD are really the only online shooters i've ever gotten heavily into. Hopefully this will be good enough to be the next.

The E3 preview really got me excited. That's what the original Rainbow Six was in my head when I was 12, minus all the futuristic tech. Can't wait.

Edit: And Socom, can't forget about Socom
