Is PS4’s Success Due To Superior Multiplatform Titles?

As of right now, the PlayStation 4 has sold twice as many consoles worldwide as the Xbox One (according to numerous sources).

That 10 million-to-5 million drubbing has reasons behind it, obviously. Typically, in the PlayStation vs. Xbox war, it's the superiority of Sony's first-party studios that offers a significant edge for hardcore gamers.

But is at least part of Sony's success due to the better performance of multiplatform games on PS4? We've spent all year seeing headlines for titles that simply perform better on Sony's console, whether it's in the HD department or the frames per second department. In fact, I have difficulty thinking of even one notable multiplatform game that was technically better on the Xbox One. Most major titles have indeed fared better on the PS4 and that could be having a huge impact.

Of course, one could argue that the difference between 1080p and 900 or 980p is negligible. And for the most part, that's true, unless you're absurdly anal. However, that doesn't stop the message sent by a constant slew of headlines that clearly display the PS4's technical edge. The bottom line is that, all things being equal, you want the best version, right? Well, the PS4 and Xbox One are the same price now, neither has really hit us hard with fantasic must-have exclusive software and in the end, it's obvious that positive word-of-mouth has greatly benefited Sony.

And yes, a big part of that positive PR is due to this issue, wouldn't you say?

I'd say for sure, the 1080P 60fps target has been a huge deal. There really wasn't anything else to talk about when Xbox cost more and people realized "cloud computing" was smoke and mirrors.

Ha totally forgot about the cloud computing stuff. That's funny.

Not sure the 1080p/60fps news really breaks through to the general public. Maybe to those like us who keep our nose to the news feeds, but there's got to be more to it than that.

I agree with Saiyan. How much of the resolution stuff actually makes it to the mainstream audience? And how much do they even care?

We often forget that many of the people that play games don't read anything from games websites. None of the people I know read games websites at all, they just like playing games, and all own PS4's.

Yes, I think that is a big deal. I mean really PS3 games should have been in 1080p, but if this is truly going to be a next gen above it. I think 1080p and 60fps has to become the industry standard. I know Metal Gear Solid V will tick them boxes and we hear so often that games on the PS4 have a much better performance rate an with the majority of games being multi-platform… I se no reason to go with the Xbox

What does make it to the moderate public is which is better, even if they don't understand the whole resolution and frames per second debate.

Imho, last years E3 by microsoft really rub gamers the wrong way and PS4's graphical power just tilted the balance in Sony's favor. Microsoft will need another price cut and hope Sony does not price match to move system. Again just my opinion.

Sony's lead has more to do with what MS did wrong than what Sony did right.

I agree. And part of that must have something to do with the PS4's architecture and how it is possible for a lot of multiplat developers are able to get more juice out of it than Xbox One's.

Agreed. Having said that, Sony *did* do a lot of things right this time around. But yeah, MS blew it big time.

All the pre and post E3 Xbone blunders permeated the casual gaming audience down through to the general public, but the reversals didn't necessarily break through. I knew people that still thought the Xbone was online only when it launched.

Going off of Destiny's opening week game sales, according to VGchartz, PS4 copies of the game exceeded Xbox One's stateside by 22%

Factor in the last gen sales, it's dead even, just like the reports coming from Europe. For a a game Sony is treating like a first party game its sure as hell selling a lot on the competitor's platforms.

But I don't think anyone really cares about sales numbers of old-gen consoles now.

From what I can tell, every I know that had a PS3, has upgraded to a PS4, and everyone who had a 360, still only has a 360.

We always knew the 360 crowd were more casual anyways.

Activision and Bungie do or they wouldn't have…you know….released on those systems. Bungie especially, since they allowed the most incapable system, the 360, to dictate how the game had to be developed..

At E3 last year, xbox committed suicide, we wanted no part in it and jumped ship.

Microsoft's version of cloud computing isn't going to go far.

Game streaming like Playstation Now and Shinra Technologies are where the future of cloud gaming is, IF we do end up going down that road at all.

I dont think that Sony's first party had any real significance on their lead in any gen. Clearly it is third party exclusives that always put them over the top. And affordable media functions.

The resolution debate was started by the gaming media, these so called journalists doing their best impression of Sony PR. If people truly cared about resolution and graphics over actual game experiences, we'd be playing on PC. More developers are reaching 1080 on the X1 than not and as far as I know, none of the PS4 exclusive AAA run at 1080 and 60. Hell even TLoU Remaster has trouble holding it. The whole thing is a just the new hate thing to get a bunch of stupids to parrot it on the net and the real world.

Funny to see so many Sony fans claiming victory already in ten months. Last generation they beat the "it's a marathon!" drum for seven years.

I think a big problem was how MS handled their debut. It pissed off way too many people, and the damage was done. No amount of backpeddling will fix that. Heck, some people even started a petition, demanding the debut specs be reinstated (why do harm to gamers?) There simply wasn't enough angry people made happy with the changes to buy it.

it has not mattered for the past 15 or so years, so why would it now?
xbox was significantly more powerful than the ps2, and we all know how that ended.
ps3 was slightly more powerful than the 360, albeit much much more difficult to work with, and we all know how that ended.
hell look at the wii, a piece of &^%$ power wise put up against the ps3 and 360, and yup we know how that ended too…….

Nope, as of now what are the real PS Exclusives… Killzone… inFamous… hardly system sellers… All the games I am excited for are multi-platform. If anything I think Xbox has the best exclusive so far in TitanFall, but when Naughty Dog is finished with the PS4 in years to come I think we'll have known we all made the right choice.

From the beginning of this generation, Microsoft kept shooting it self in the foot. As if they had too many toes or something. The other reason has a little to do with the whole better resolution stuff on ps4, and although many people may not care about it, I think it boils down to ps4 simply being more powerfull for the same price. Last gen ps3 was had more power but it cost a lot more and there was no stock anywhere.

A miracle has happened in my house. My beautiful wife made me go shopping with her on Sunday, I said I would but only if she tries playing diablo with me. She enjoyed it so much that we played again yesterday. She was never a gamer. Diablo 3 is awesome.

I can't say it's any particular thing. I believe most gamers look at the value proposition and make their move from there.

What platform will provide me the most bang for the buck?
PS4 had the price edge.
PS4 had the performance edge.
PS4 didn't force a Kinect on you.
PS4 didn't send out a mixed message about being an DVR-game-take-over-your-living-room box that you talked to and waived your hands at.

But I do think it unlikely exclusives had much to do with purchasing decisions. When we're talking percentages of game sales, Sony's in-house stuff makes a teenie tiny portion of the whole, especially when games like Knack, KZ Shadow Fall, and the oft delayed Drive Club were leading the charge.

Everyone can assume the majority of quality third-party games will appear on both platforms so I think it's more about the total value proposition of the HARDWARE/platform.

It's all about how poorly MS handled the Xbox One reveal a year and a half ago. See:
DRM Policy (reversed before Xbox released, but was VERY unpopular with the early adopters…surely they spread the word to casuals even tho MS reversed course)
Price difference (MS has since dropped the price-3 times in the UK)
Kinect (again, MS has since unbundled it, reversing their "kinect is a big part of our console" BS policy)
And at the bottom of the list is probably the MARGINAL difference in multiplatform titles. Because honestly, if you can really tell the difference between 1080P and 900P on a 40 inch LED then good for you, but the majority of us can't.

Ironically I have so far been enjoying the Xbox exclusives much more than my PS4 exclusives so far this gen. I just downloaded D4 (think a whacky version of Heavy Rain mixed with a Tell Tale game) and still play Titanfall with friends. And unfortunately for Sony the exclusives coming out this fall are not in their favor. Real excited for Sunset and Halo: MCC. 2015 is all about BloodBorne and the Order for me tho (hoping it comes out better than early previews have indicated though).
