Analysts Believe Destiny Could Sell 15 Million In 2014

Will Bungie's blockbuster Destiny break sales records?

That remains to be seen but in an investors note today , Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia has predicted a possible sales range for the anticipated game: 8-15 million in 2014.

The firm is currently anticipating a final number closer to 15 million, given the huge response to the beta (4.6 million participants), and the fact that it's the #1 new IP pre-order in GameStop history. Another research firm, Cowen & Company, agrees with the assessment, saying Destiny could move 10-15 million this year. That might even outstrip perennial FPS kingpin, Call of Duty .

Activision better hope Destiny sells exceedingly well. They put half a billion dollars into this project, and we're pretty sure they're gonna want that back…with a lot extra.

I hope it does well as well. I'm in it because it will be a part of gaming history for this generation, a vantage point from which all future similar projects are benchmarked, and even as a multiplayer hater I won't let a possible important industry event pass me by. I have to stay up to date on where gaming is and Destiny is important to that in my estimation.

yea, Destiny will be one of those gaming moments that I'll reflect on while rocking in my creeky wooden rocking chair. My great grand kids will be huddled around and I'll be sharing great moments of video game history with them.
"back in my day there was Street Fighter II …. then there was Final Fantasy VII. Then Halo and Xbox came about, which begat CoD. and then the World of Warcraft.
And then. Then finally, there was Destiny." coughs and clears throat.
"who would've thought that five years later Activision would release their own console. The Activision Box. Where Destiny and CoD would be played exclusively and both Sony and MS had no choice but to exit the market."
*dozes off and falls asleep*

Funny …Ive talked to quite a few beta testers and most of them think the game kinda sucked….

Well, I'm sure the "quite a few" beta testers you talked to is a much better sample to determine sales of this game than the data gathered by those research analysts.

On another point – to say the game "sucked" is absurd. By any measurable criteria (controls, graphics, gameplay/gunplay, sound, etc….) the game is very very good. Some might say excellent.

You (or the beta testers you spoke with) might not have liked the game. In fact, they may have hated it. But even people who don't care for the gameplay cannot deny, truthfully, that the game itself is extremely well executed for what it is trying to do. To claim otherwise just makes one appear foolish.

For example, I personally think CoD is a boring pile of repetitive shit. I don't care for it. At all. However, I also recognize that it is very very good at accomplishing what it has set out to. I understand the "too high" review scores the game receives, because it is executing it's goals very very well. I'm still not going to play it, nor enjoy it. I also don't care for basketball games, but I certainly recognize the superb quality that 2K keeps pumping into their franchise year after – those are great games. Just not for me.

"quite a few beta testers"

There were 4.6 million unique beta testers. How many have you talked to that, in comparison to the 4.6 million total, equates to "quite a few".

I mean, to put it in perspective, to have talked to 1 whole percent of all testers, you would have had to have talked to 46,000 different people… just to hear from 1 percent of all testers….

I saw a guy leave a store with an Xbox One the other day. I thought 'dang, XO must be outselling PS4 now'

but then I saw a guy leave a store with a PS4 today.
They now must be equal in sales.

No. You didn't talk to "beta testers". That didn't happen.

For starters, we never called ourselves beta testers. We played the Beta. Just like many of us enjoyed the Alpha. And the vast majority of the 4.6 million people who played it enjoyed it.

And even IF you talked to a couple of your similarly short minded friends, you represent a tiny insignificant amount of the total people who played and enjoyed the Beta. 3/4.6million

CoD won't sell what Destiny does. I've been saying this all summer.

With 4.6 million beta players, you are obviously going to get some people that say that game sucked. I played the beta and although I normally do not play first person shooters much, I loved it. Tight controls, cool enemies, and fun co-op missions.

Bottom line it is going to sell a ridiculous amount of games…question is how much.

To think both Destiny and CoD are under the house of Activision.
That's two game series now that will rarely drop low in price.

Activision is the publisher. Bungie deserves all praise for this one.
