PSXE’s Best Of The Best Polls Update: Final Fantasy VII Dominates

Okay guys, voting has officially ended for the first round of PSX Extreme's Best of the Best Poll: PS1 RPG. As just about anyone could've guessed, one game above all others ran away with it in the first round, and will most certainly do the same in the second round. But these are equal opportunity polls, so get over it. 🙂

For the final numbers, you can visit the official discussion thread in the forums, and kick off a spirited debate. They're always fun, right? Anyway, we now have the top 5 RPGs that have successfully made it into the second round, and will duke it out to determine the final results. In the spirit of the Olympics – and just 'cuz we don't think enough competitions hand out Gold, Silver and Bronze medals – we'll recognize the top three finishers. And the interesting part about this first poll is that the fifth and final spot was determined by a difference of only 2 votes ! Here are the finalists and seedings for the second round:

1. Final Fantasy VII

2. Final Fantasy VIII

3. Final Fantasy IX

4. Final Fantasy Tactics

5. Chrono Cross

Yep, Chrono Cross beat out Xenogears by only two votes, and obviously, this is a total Final Fantasy sweep thus far. But it was also very close between CC and Final Fantasy Tactics , and another relatively close race between FFVIII and IX. The Gold is assured, but it'll be a battle to determine the other medals! Let Round 2 begin NOW!  A total of 1301 votes were recorded for Round 1, let's see if we can get that number even higher as the series progresses. 🙂

VIII was better than IX … I liked IX, but was childish as hell.

Anyways … >_>;; *coughs* VII wins again *coughs*

Well yes, but it was better than VII too.

Honestly, FF7 should have never been on this list. Make people have to think more with their vote. Once you put FF7 up there, it was done and over

That would be biased in itself, its like telling the American Olympic Basketball team that they can't participate because they're most likely to win. That's probably why PSX is having the top 3, so we can see who wins after the expected gold.

How the HELL did Xenogears get beat by Crono Cross? wow. The soundtrack is better than xenogears, i give it that ( composed by the same guy ). Both are great games, but i really think crono got the extra votes due to it being a sequel to a game that SE is too dumb/lazy to make another sequel for

Have to disagree. Chrono Cross was really never meant to be a sequel, first of all, and I found the gameplay to be infinitely more engaging and innovative than what we had in Xenogears. Perhaps it was a toss-up on story, and many will say Xenogears had better writing, but in terms of graphics, depth, and general freedom, CC was better. I loved how recruiting certain team members would have a direct impact on the characters you could or couldn't recruit until later, for example. 🙂

The thing about Crono Cross with all of its characters that it failed with IMO is the depth of these characters. After the first 10 people you get, they all started to seem the same.

Each of the characters after awhile just seem like carbon copies of someone else, with their special attacks being the only difference. Sprigg ( or w/e the old lady who dopplegangs name was ) was one of the only characters who was vastly different than the others IMO.

Although the story was good, i don't think it would have been that great if it wasnt for the story linking to the past Crono game. Its a story of 2 or 3 main characters and every other person just seems to be tagging along with their optional side stories you can partake in.

All of that said, i really loved Crono cross

Um…FFXII was fantastic.

FFXII was terrible, there were no story events just prouling through fields & temples with no real objective. it bored me to death! the only exciting moments were the judge battles.

hmm, seems to mme FFXII had story events, i dont know what you are talking about. If you mean the game didnt force feed the story down our throats like other FF games, then yeah, i guesss we can say you are right

Ultima: …I really don't even know what you're talking about. There were longer cut-scene and story segments in FFXII than there were in FFX. Not getting this.

I suggest you read IGN.com's review of FFXII. It really enlightens you on what kind of a masterpiece it is.

It's not the kind of rpg which gives you an easy ride(FFX). It's more of a real OPEN rpg where you spend a lot of time traveling. While traveling you might lose track(connection) with the story. But that doesn't make the story less amazing. FFXII was a great entry, solid characters with lots of twists.

People should look past Vaan's vest and realize that no everyone has a great sense of clothing style.

Mind you i love FFX, but FFXII is right up there with it. Actually my fave 2 FFs of all time.

I remember after a while of playing FFXII i began to dread playing it. it got that bad. The characters were all dull as a blank, apart from Balthier who has an interesting personality & a back story, peneol & Vaan had no back story, Basch was that typical hard man, Fraans voice was constantly monotone, it was depressing to hear her, Ashe had a backstory but its quite bleak compaired to FF9's Princess Garnet.

like i said before there were no real story events the judges would appear from time to time which would make it more intense but other than that it was rather plain. Look i love the FF series but this game was by far the biggest disappointment ive ever had from a game.

I think Chrono Cross was probably the most unique (sp?) of all thoes games up there, but I do understand why FFVII would win, because it is a pretty revolutionary title.
(voted for Chrono Cross)

from what i played of crono cross it was awsome!! but i never did beat it. i would get just so far and get stuck in a really hard boss fight or something. i think i should probly hook up my ps1 again and satrt beating the rpgs i never could a few years ago. final fantasy 8 i tried like 6 times and everytime i got to the end i would get stomped on like hardcore dude just beat horribly so eventually i gave up.

VII > VIII. O_o;; … VIII never was better than VII. Why do you think they're producing so many prequels and sequels of VII?! Movies, Crisis Core, Before Crisis and so on and forth? Sure because of the money, but because it was their best selling and so far the best FF series Square Enix ever made for now … Waiting for XIII and Versus to come out, they may have a chance of taking the crown off of VII but who knows. Imagin if they remake FF VII … -jaw drops- That's just a record breaker, PS3 sales will go sky-high and the game will probably sell 6 or 8 or possibly 10 million units in a full-year-scale. Well, thats what I would think.

Well FFXII got 2 spinoffs, and FFX got a sequel.

IMO FFVIII was just better in every way.
While FFVII focused solely on Cloud and Sephiroth, FFVIII focused on the whole party, making everyone in your party important.

I mean who really cared 'bout Yuffie or Cait Sith?

Though VII was a great game. I just think it gets this fame cause it was the first of its kind, 3D and all that jazz.

btw scarecrow, what you said before was just lousy & pathetic, next time come up with a reasonable reply.

as for the whole party of FF8 being important, i cant agree with that (As much as i love the game.), There was no point in having Quistis in the party. The only interesting events with her was at the beginning in Ifirits cave & shooting the robot in Deling city. she could have easily been a non playable character like Cid.

Wait wha?
Quistis mattered a lot in terms of her connections to the Garden, as well as being the voice of reason.

Though I do agree that sometimes she wasn't crucial, but she contributed in terms of giving her input on things.

I can barely remember when Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent, Red XIII gave any kind of useful information or that they mattered that much. You know it, I know it, FFVII was all 'bout Cloud and Sephiroth, nothing more nothing less(for the most part).

Cait Sith stole the Keystone from Clouds party, was a spy, gave insight on shinra, got the black materia. he did quite alot though after temple of the acients they should have let it there, he must have returned because of Areith. Red XIII was the link to the knowledgeable bughenhagen ( i think thats it lol), Yuffie…… just got in the way,but at least she has a personality, Vincent past with the shinra was good but DoC's story was horrific!

Id say all of them are better than Quistis, shes as dull as a blank and her story was over after dollet, at the beging of the game.FF8 Is probaly my favourite game but she was truely boring, the only other problem with FF8 is the orphanage scenes in disc 2, other that that its beautiful!
