Gamescom 2014 A Rousing Success

A whole lot of people attended Gamescom this year, but not quite as many as 2013.

According to a press release , Gamescom 2014 saw around 335,000 attendees, which is just below last year's total of 340,000.

Between August 5 and 9, the popular trade show saw 700 exhibitors from 47 countries (2013: 635 exhibitors from 40 countries), which continues the rise that began back in 2009, when only 458 companies from 31 countries attended the event. This year's "ready to play" theme worked out pretty darn well, as it drew a huge number of presenters, companies and journalists from around the globe. Said President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse GmbH Gerald Bose:

"The gamescom is the most important platform for the European computer and video games industry. The increase on the exhibitor side, both in terms of the absolute number as well as the international, underscores that clear. As organiser of the fair, we are pleased that the gamescom is set as a firm date in the industry. For the location Cologne the gamescom is also of great importance, because the computer and video games industry is an industry of the future, which provides a boost for the fair site Cologne."

Cologne is just such a long way away…still, you get to go to Europe, which I would vastly prefer to Los Angeles (E3).

Phil Spencer: "yea, we looked at our exclusive portfolio of games and felt we didn't have a good S-E style Disney game."

….next year
Phil Spencer: "yea, we looked at our exclusive portfolio of games and felt we didn't have a good exclusive NFL game on XO. So now it'll be coming exclusively to XO in Summer of 2015."

….the year after that
John Masterson: "yea, we don't know what to do from here with XO. Ladies and gentlemen we're happy to present you the future of living room entertainment. XBOX TWO! *thunderous pre-recorded applause*

*Pre-recorded applause*

That was hilarious. I still remember hearing it, then watching the camera span the crowd to see virtually no movement.

There won't be much money to be made on XO in 2-3 years time.

This really confused me, since when did GamesCom become such a big event – I mean it rivals E3 this year! I remember being angry after watching Sony's 2013 show and it was just an hour onslaught of indie games… I mean its great for GamesCom… I'm just still a little confused to how it suddenly shot up to being a main event worldwide…

It's not suddenly, it's been growing for years.

Gaming runs a lot of deficits but it also grows as an industry every year, and unlike any other entertainment medium these unveiling shows have the ability to grow to meet the demand of big crowds who are eager to come out.

I was pretty disappointed with this years events.

E3 and Gamescom have both been very meh. Not too many announcements that appeal to me unfortunately.

I hope TGS has more new PS exclusive IP announcements. The fact that we know absolutely nothing about what most of the Sony first party studios are working on is getting a little old to be honest. How long has it been since Guerilla started working on their new IP? What about SSM? Sony London? Sony Bend?

I was excited for Gamescom this year due to Pearl Abyss being there and doing more interviews.

Can't wait for Black Desert Online and there is also a possibility that it can come to consoles as well but will be out on PC first.

The game is being published by a new publisher named Daum.
