Final Fantasy XV: A Journey of Trepidation

It’s almost time.

For me, and perhaps millions of long-time Final Fantasy fans worldwide, the air has seemingly ceased to move as one of the largest, storied franchises is only two weeks away from releasing its newest entry, Final Fantasy XV.

Square Enix has set a challenging goal for sales at an optimistic 10 million copies . Only Final Fantasy VII has been able to achieve that mark for the franchise, but for whatever reason, that title was exceptionally legendary within the gaming community.

But as far as I can tell, there’s very little at play to suggest that number will be achieved. Lightning Returns barely eclipsed 1 million, and even the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII, across multiple platforms, came a couple million short of the mark.

On the other hand, this is the Final Fantasy many fans have been waiting for since its days of production as “Final Fantasy Versus XIII”. Perhaps a new, near-sandboxy presentation is what the franchise needs. Perhaps the release of the excellent Brotherhood anime series or the underwhelmingly reviewed “Kingsglaive” CG animated movie helped inspire new hope in its lore. Speculation from each “pro” or “nay” camp continues to fly back and forth, even now with copious amounts of information at our disposal.

Hey guys, haven't been on since 2011 when the owner was writing car reviews on here. And I think Ben had just sold his 350Z and bought a M35. You still have that car Ben? The only members name I remember is limited vertigo because of that ugly cheeseburger. Everyone else I forgot. Glad to see you guys are still alive.

New writing gig outside the video game world. Just the next step in his career. Owners didn't feel like hiring anyone new, I guess. They're busy with some other ventures, I believe.

I look forward to FFXV.

It'll need to sell real well. This could be Final Fantasy's last AAA sized production if it doesn't pull in the numbers.

I'm not planning on playing it at launch (unless anxiousness over an unprecedented GotY-like critical response happens concerning it… yeah, unlikely)

I still have the monstrously huge Xenoblade Chronicles X I've been working on. I'm over 60 hours in on it and there's still a long ways to go. My Skells can fly!

I will pick this up down the road for my collection, but as of now i don't have the urge to play it. Final Fantasy just doesn't inspire me anymore and it hasn't since IX. Their games just lost the magic that they once had(for me), maybe it's just cause i'm older now, but it seems i am nowhere near the only one that has felt this way.

As far as selling 10 million copies goes, i don't think thats going to happen, but i would be happy to be wrong on this one.

Like I said in the article, the lore is really grabbing me. What makes me uneasy about it is how little I enjoyed the demo. But those movies did the trick… and you gotta admit, that Omen video might be the best video game advertisement I've ever seen.

If the story can hold me, I know I'll enjoy it regardless of gameplay. Here's hoping!

I'm with you on the story trumping everything else. Well maybe not trumping but at least making the experience pleasant enough to deal with any other negatives. This is how I treated XIII and I expect to treat XV. But honestly, I'm more excited about playing the XII HD port on my PS4 than this 10 year in development FF title.

The open world tech demo still gets me every time I watch it. Everything "looks" great. Final Fantasy still has it's world class production value. The soundtrack is on pace to match the series standard as well. Hard to beleive one of the reasons I got back into gaming world a decage ago was b/c of MGS4 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. If the battle mechanic can feel attractive and smooth and the story be meaningful and clever I'll fork over $60 for i

SquareEnix has turned into a bunch of cheese dicks as of late, but I really hope this turns out well.

Great read. I look forward to more articles from you. SE has never had trouble creating FF world deep in lore with interesting characters. I don't see this game being any different. It all comes down to gameplay (it's a game after all) and I don't trust that the gameplay will offer much depth. This is the same issue I had with XIII.

I am definitely looking forward to this game as well. Bought the Ultimate Collector's Edition – felt it was absolutely necessary since I have been waiting for this game for about 10.5 years. A decade.

Really really can't wait – and I think it'll be an awesome game. I don't expect Ben to really like this at all – but hey I think a lot of Kingdom Hearts fans will like this game.

Couple of things…

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! Hope everybody enjoys tomorrow and eats lots!

2nd, since I (and maybe most people) know everyone by their screen names and not real names, is it possible to sign the article with your screen names? OR at least in parenthesis? Ben was easy because his screen name and real name matched, I honestly wouldnt have known this was Underdog if he didnt alluded to it in his comment.

As far as the game. I'll look at it. But I dont ever buy anything day 1, month 1, or usually even 6 months 1. I have a bunch of games I havent played on "last-gen" and enjoy taking my time with whichever game Im playing. Right now just got started with Demon's Souls. So far so good.

Im excited for this game. I have been looking forward to it since it was Versus 13.

My only complaint about it really has been the character design. I liked the original design of the characters before they got all the skulls, and tatoos etc.

But both demos were fine in my opinion. Also I was never worried about them constantly changing the combat mechanics a bit or adding things based on feedback. I can see it showing that they don't have a vision for what they want to do, but I see it as them wanting to make the best game they can.

I'm playing the game for the story and in that regard it looks like it will deliver. I have finished games with poor gameplay because the story and world was immersive enough to keep me playing until the end.

Well it's sad I needed my PS4Pro and a 4k to make this pile work at its best but at least I can put the machine through its paces. WHY on earth have I gone back on my word on waiting for reviews? Well I haven't. I get 2 games for Christmas. I decided to follow this franchise down to Hell if I don't have to pay for it. For the record Eve: Valkyrie for PSVR is the other.

I don't expect it to sell that well, I know the "new" fans and young anime emo guys who can only play action games are excited in the way I used to be excited for globe hopping turn based colorful world changers liked FFI-X. There's a clear effort by SE to make the game seem like it's a huge deal and while some outlets are having fun if the gameplay is still like the demos and the world is still a huge empy midgar and there's 2 women off to the side somewhere I don't see how it's going to be "up there" with any of the good ones.

That said, it could still be a good game not worth the Final Fantasy monicker. I rather hope it dies in obscurity and the message I sent SE is sent by fans everywhere "We didn't want an RPG length action game." All on the off chance that FFXVI will be a new direction. FFVII Remake is probably just a lost cause moneyraker that might be fun.

Like it or not I'm becoming some kind of video game personality and it looks like I'm going to have to come down on some side of this issue and I can't do that without setting aside my wants and giving the game a fair shot, though I won't be opening until Christmas and I'll be glancing at review scores before then.

Persona 5 why the delays?

What's well though? 2-3 million, or the 10-14 they need to turn a profit?

Underdog15

I have no doubt it'll sell the normal franchise mark of 5-7 mil. I actually think that's what can be expected.

The question is if it'll sell well based on what SE has said it needs. (10-14 mil) That part is a little more suspect.

Only FFVII hit that 10 million mark. And it wasn't just because it was Final Fantasy. It was because for one reason or another, it became part of video game lore and became synonymous with Playstation during the year it had released.

I hope it does hit 10 mil, because if it doesn't, I sort of wonder if SE would ever do a AAA production valued FF ever again. Why would they if they just keep on losing money?

Been playing FFXV for 2 days now as I got my Ultimate Collectors Edition super early.

The game is absolutely gorgeous, gameplay has a nice learning curve but oh so smooth when it clicks with you. Loving the characters and their hilarious interactions, definitely see myself playing this for a 100+ hours.

Well, metacritic is sitting at around a 86% so far and reviews are hovering in the mid 80's with one or two at 9 out of 10.

I really enjoyed the duscae demo plus what id seen so far and had alot of faith in it being a game id be interested in despite this community's negativity towards it. Im glad its doing well and I'll definitely be pickin it up soon.

Underdog15
Underdog15

80-something is exactly what this community anticipated it would get, though.

Which serves the pensiveness, don't you think? 7 meta'd a 92. 8 got a 90 and 9 had a 94 while 10 and 12 both came in at 92. (Anything earlier than VII is sort of pre-internet)

There's a reason XIII's drop to 82 and XV's day in the 80's serves the negativity. No one ever suggested the games would be bad. We suggested it wasn't as hard-hitting as FF used to be.

The scores support that.

From what ive read, most in this community expected less than that (And i read everything on this site). A mediocre game at best and between wishing it might do well actually had underlying hopes of failure because it wasnt "their" final fantasy.

It seems this may be an actually good to possibly great game which is more than this series has seen in a while and i hope they give it a chance.

Maybe its not the return to form old school fans yearned for and i get that. I loved the older games myself. I just think its a step in the right direction and one i applaud. For that matter ive been burned by several game series that have changed their ways over time to appeal to wider audiences.

They listened to fan feedback after the duscae demo and while understandably not willing to rebuild their combat system from scratch they did make efforts to accommodate turn based players.

Its a shame games dont stick to the formula that made them classics but it happens time and time again and whether or not we like it…it is what it is.

Issues with thwir practices aside this is a win.

Of course i havent played it in its entirety yet so my entire point might be mute if it really does blow

I hope they hit at least close to that 10 mil. If they don't get close to that projected target they had, I fear this could be the last AAA quality produced FF made.

Put it this way, World of FF won't touch it in the sales department, but I'm willing to bet they spent a crudload less on it. If they overall net more money than on FFXV… see where I'm going?

I'll be playing it tonight for the first time after work. Should be interesting!

Great artciel, Underdog,

So far I am really liking the game. I played it from 10PM to 2AM last night and the bromance between the character really grows on you quite fast (at least for me it has) and I can't wait to dive in deeper into the combat system and the exploration.

I can't talk about the story because I am still in the beginning. In all RPGs I tend to do a lot of side missions before going through the main story.

Time will tell

Ive played about 3 hours so far and it has done a great job of pulling me into the world. I'm going to try and play it mostly following the story and only detouring when I need to.

I actually like the bromance as well, it is decently done.

It would have been interesting to see Bens opinion on the game, as he was very negative towards the demos and the idea of the game in general.

Also it is very clear to me that the game is an ARPG and not an action game with RPG light elements, however that might change as I get further in the game. So far levels do actually mean something, and I like the progression system in the game so far.

Also the stand by me intro was a really nice touch.

About the remake of Resident Evil 2:

Resident Evil 2 was released on January 21, 1998 which means it turns 20 on January 21,2018[duh :)]….guess that they will try to release it that day.
Don't mess this up Capcom, please make this remake like the [fantastic]remake of Resident Evil
