Ben’s Week In Review: February 21

Gotta do this quickly so I can get back to Far Cry Primal . 😉

This rumor about FFXV and the FFVII Remake being "better" on Nintendo NX begs the question…

I have to admit, I was a little surprised to hear it: Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy VII Remake coming to Nintendo's new console, and actually being the best versions, outstripping the PS4 iterations ?

No idea if this is true but for the sake of discussion, let's say it is. It obviously means the Nintendo NX – or whatever it'll be called – will be a bit more powerful than any of the consoles currently available. Now, I don't necessarily believe this as Nintendo has never really been about "power." It's not their niche; it's not what gets them their followers. They bowed out of the power struggle in the PS3/360 generation; they just let Sony and Microsoft compete on that level and instead, Nintendo opted for something different. And it worked beautifully. The Wii U didn't work anywhere near as well, of course, but that's simply because you can't issue an updated gimmick years later and expect it to explode like the original gimmick.

But if it's true, this would also mean that most multiplatform games that arrive later in this generation would perform slightly better on NX, right? I wonder if this is enough to convince people to buy the system, just so they can have the best multiplat versions. Then again, I doubt many bought PS4 just so they could have full 1080p on most multiplats as opposed to the 900p or 980p we find in lots of Xbox One versions. Plus, a lot of major third-party franchises haven't been on Nintendo consoles in the past. So, this minor power edge really wouldn't help much…would it? I mean, when I asked what would entice you into a Nintendo NX purchase , I didn't see any replies that said, "because it'll be more powerful." And I'm not surprised.

I actually don't have a problem with the DLC Pass price hike for Fallout 4

I know a lot of people were peeved to hear Bethesda was jacking the price of the Fallout 4 DLC Pass from $30 to $50 .

Well, if you were a big fan of the series, chanced are, you already got this Pass for the original $30 price tag. Even if you didn't, once you saw the news that the price increase doesn't go into effect until March 1, you probably jumped on the $30 option. But that's not what I'm focusing on here; point is, I don't really have a problem with this. I mean, I do have a problem with developers and publishers releasing games that feel rushed and/or incomplete, because that's inexcusable to me. But when it comes to DLC, you're talking about extra content that had to be created by the team, and the team deserves to be paid for that extra work. My guess is that when Bethesda sat down to start working on the expansions for Fallout 4 , they just went above and beyond…because it's kinda what they do. The expansion content just got bigger and the ideas kept coming and as a result, they're working harder and longer to bring us more content.

And if that's the case, then yeah, they should be paid for that extra effort. No, I don't believe any of this was created prior to the release of Fallout 4 and "held back" to be sold later. In fact, I know that isn't true. But speaking of Bethesda, what do you guys think they're toiling away on outside of Fallout 4 DLC? They said "three long-term projects" are currently in the hopper, and they're "different than anything" the studio has done before, so…

Personal gaming update

Speaking of games that feel incomplete or rushed, there's this past week's anticipated fighter, Street Fighter V . It's one of those times when you just wish the developers had finished the concept; you wish they'd made sure the in-game store was ready at launch, that we wouldn't have to wait for this "free Story Mode upgrade" until freakin' June, that all those stress tests and betas would've translated to a much smoother release overall. The gameplay itself really is excellent and if you want to score the game based entirely on that, then yes, the score would be a good deal higher. But that's not the right thing to do. I said it before when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched (which I loved, by the way) and I'm saying it again: Critics and gamers alike have to stop glossing over these issues as if they don't matter. They do matter.

I had to pause on my Assassin's Creed Syndicate play-through to focus on Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 and Far Cry Primal . Don't forget that both come out this week; for a glimpse at GW2, check out my beta thoughts .

I broke down and bought Battlefront. Yeah it woulda been pretty good last gen, but hey Star Wars is star wars.

I re-alphebitized my gaming collection as soon as I could get out of bed. Alas, after much doctors and tests I am beginning to mend. The wound from a Morgul blade may never truly heal though. A few nights of 8 hour chills almost got me. Almost had to end the world with me. But I'm comin' back. Speakin' of back, I fell on that, thanks to the ice, on the way to the doctor.

I'd like to thank BikerSaint for schlepping to the post office to ship me something. Your money is on the way my friend. Getting another bought of Dreamcast fever. Just burnt like 15 more games…

I got my friend a PS4 and Fallout 4 for his birthday in January. Today he's talking about his play time with that f*cking arnold schwarzenegger mobile game. What the f*ck? Go play the actual video game I know you'll like you dipsh*t. 😀

Ha, World,
Looks like the USPS's Friday guesstimate was all wrong, cause your package was visiting in the city of Indianapolis yesterday.

I guess you'll get it on Monday if it gets to your post office in the wee hours of the morning.

I'm looking forward to far cry primal, but I'll try to hold off and hopefully it will go on a bit of a sale by summer. It would just distract me from school right now anyway.

I'm debating getting the season pass for fallout. I'm finally getting a good pc, but I already have it for ps4 and am up to lv 39.
I don't want to rebuy it at full price, maybe I can just get the season pass in advance of the main game on steam.

Witcher 3 was patched a lot of times, FFVII gonna be released on episodes, MGSV cut the last mission, and SFV was released unfinished (at least they gonna put the stuff later for free… but come on!), this gen it's becoming the most awful one, miss the 90's and Ps2 days.

Man I can't believe here we are almost a year later and this site is still saying that The Witcher was broken at launch. While there were some bugs I was a day one buyer and played it daily at least 4 to 5 hours a day for the first month and I didn't run into nearly as many issues as I have read other people complaining about. Yes there were some minor graphical glitches here and there but nothing game breaking. In every case either a quick trip to the main menu or a fast travel corrected the problem since most of my issues related to the game camera moving in too close to Geralt. Maybe I just got lucky but I know 3 other people who played it in the exact same time frame (all on PS4) and not a one of us ran into the myriad of complaints as listed here. We discussed this game daily and even got together once we all completed the game for an in depth discussion and not once did bugs get mentioned except to ask if anyone had any issues that were being listed on the internet.

I guess all I am saying is that there are better games to bash for being broken at launch and I am tired of hearing about The Witcher launch since AC Unity is a much better example of a broken game at launch and from a developer with a much bigger presence and ability to test for these bugs.

As a general rule I don't seem to have as many issues on the majority of games I play compared to what I see on various web sites and forums. Are you guys modding your systems or something?

You got lucky probably.

Usually the victims/complainers are the "vocal" community. Fallout 3 was a glitched out mess according to the internet, bug I had to little to no issues with my copy. The loudest group will always be the protesters even if they make up a small percentage of the community.

I had FO3 GOTY edition and it was pretty messed up. I didn't care because it was THAT good, and it made me overlook things, but it was often insane.

The Witcher was really just funny to me, winding up inside of things like the Philadelphia experiment lol.

I never had much strange happen in W3 except 2 side missions could not be completed until like 4 patches later. Lol

Probably my stupidity and not a glitch but I got stuck in the cave. There were just no Swallows images with my witcher sense. I couldn't move forward in the story.

Yeah Unity was a disaster justified by having to issue a patch that reloads a whole city. But The Witcher isn't excused and shouldn't be of its issues either. Same goes for Fallout 3. While I generally had good luck with the main game the dlc was a nightmare and I couldn't finish 3 of them. New Vegas was even worse. I was only able to get to level 3 and it ended there. Skyrim frustrated me as well. I was super deep in that game with all the motivation in the world to do anything and everything as I did in Oblivion. But the glitch regarding walking through water freezing the game ruined it for me.

Point is these open world games are going to have issues. More so than games on a smaller scale; linear games for example. They shouldn't get a pass nor should these things get overlooked. If the community is talking about it a year later it's because it left an impression. A negative thing and and at best developers see that and try to remedy these types of launches.

I used to thank I wasn't having the same types of issues as others as well. I've come to realize I was more accepting of them. Now days I don't have time to deal with them.

There is nothing wrong with what Bethesda is doing with the Fallout 4 dlc price. They are basically telling everyone to go buy it now for cheap. Those who don't or people who get it later will pay more justifiably so. At least they are giving ample time to take advantage of the outcome. They easily could have just upped the price without explanation.

PGU: just Fallout 4 when I can find the time.

True, I mean they said they would raise it, they didn't just raise the price over night and piss everyone off.

Besides the anomaly that is the Wii, Nintendo has massive drops in sales with each new home console. With the lack of 3rd party support, people just don't want to buy a system to play a few Nintendo games a year. It is funny to see that even kids don't want a Nintendo, maybe even a bit sad.

If the Nintendo can get third party support maybe it'll do better than the Wii U, but I see the NX doing worse.

I haven't gotten Fallout yet because I'm not allowing myself to get any new games before I tackle some of my backlog. Now I'm wondering if it would be better to buy the dlc now and wait for the game to go on sale, or if it would be better to just wait for the inevitable GotY version. I have a fixed gaming budget every month so a savings of even $10 could be another game.

PGU: Why did Rocket league have to start a fresh season!? My friends keep sucking me into it every night. I hit rising star in doubles with my friend and we're on a nice little winning streak. Love this game. It's taking away almost all of my gaming time though. I haven't started a new game in a while, and haven't gotten nearly as much done in Black Ops as I should have by now. I'm having trouble getting the five kill streaks with the snipers in that game.

Also, I've decided now after another good play through of The Division beta that I'm gunna pass. It's starting to smell too much like another Destiny and it would be a massive time consumer, which I really can't properly handle right now. I'm going to use that time to put a dent in my backlog. Still way too many great games this gen I haven't played yet. I've had Diablo III, Arkham Knight and MGSV and haven't started any of them yet, and all three series are probably in my top ten ever.
