Ben’s Week In Review: February 15

It's snowing. Again. …ridiculous.

I don't blame Ready at Dawn for being ticked off

I actually applauded studio boss Andrea Pessino's annoyed Tweet . The hatred surrounding The Order: 1886 seems entirely unfounded and sparked by early gameplay footage that wasn't a full representation of the final product.

I've questioned various aspects of the game, too, but I've never been anything less than excited for the game. In fact, I think it's a critical game for PlayStation 4 , especially at this particular moment in the new generation. Based on everything we know, I fail to see how the game is destined to be a generic flop, nor do I understand the animosity and hostility directed at the designers. It's almost as if everyone is looking for a reason to hate on the game. When Pessino labels certain articles as "idiocy," he's perfectly in the right to do so. If it's idiotic, say it. Gamers don't have the right to run amok and spread lies just because they've got a personal agenda.

I do have reservations about The Order but I see nothing that has earned Ready at Dawn such accusations and reactions. And if I were the developers, and I'd poured my heart and soul into this project, I wouldn't appreciate such crap, either.

No, I don't care about Titanfall

EA says there's a good chance a Titanfall sequel will happen and when it does, it will be a multiplatform title . Whatever.

I saw and played a bunch of it because really, it's hard to know anyone who didn't play this game. It was such a huge deal when it came out and many bought an Xbox One just to play it. I have no idea why , though; as far as I could tell, it was just another multiplayer shooter with a few minor twists. It didn't even look especially impressive, and the overall content package seemed lacking. Granted, it's not really my thing, but I do appreciate a great game, no matter the genre. In this case, the production values were pretty good but beyond that, I wasn't seeing anything that would make me come back and play more. If they want to give us an Xbox One exclusive, give us Sunset Overdrive .

Actually, scratch that. Just bring Insomniac back to the PlayStation fold and tell them to make another Resistance . That's what I want more than anything in the shooter world, believe it or not.

Personal gaming update

And speaking of shooters, I think Evolve is a great example of a shooter with a significant twist. I know it may not entice many hardcore shooting aficionados because the learning curve is a little steep, but I appreciate that depth and variety. It's one of those games that rewards patience, practice, experimentation and strategy, and I always take to such games. I thought I might actually finish Resident Evil HD Remaster (an absolute gem for die-hard survival/horror fans), but I've been sidetracked by Evolve . That, and I'll keep clearing out districts in Assassin's Creed Unity until The Order: 1886 gets here. GTAV is getting play time, too.

As for Ubisoft, I meant every word I said . If you're going to treat those who simply want to play alone as second-rate consumers, I've got no interest in buying your products.

Overall, I think Order 1886 will be a success for Sony. I don't expect a stunner like TLoU but I do expect 80'ish in reviews overall. I expect a few to slam it. I expect a few to praise it. I expect most to say it's great.

I really liked Titanfall. It's because of Titanfall I couldn't get into Destiny's competitive multiplayer stuff.

I do have a soft spot for the original Resident Evil, even if I'm no longer into the series or zombie games. I played the PSX original a couple times through and I played through the GC remake as well. The idea of hitting it up one more time seems inviting.

PGU: It's been all about Metal Gear the last couple weeks. I've been doing both Peace Walker and MGR: Revengeance. I actually finished Revengeance on PS3 the other night. I finished Sam's free DLC content as well. I really like the game and Platinum Games is the Eddie Van Halen of these action slashers. While there's a number of rough edges about the control and a camera that's as bad as PS2's Shinobi, it's still a well enjoyed play. It's short though. The game registered only 5 and a half hours to finish. Though, I didn't listen to all the comm talk as the majority of the characters were dull and uninteresting. And half the story was goofy, especially some particular scenes. On my rating system I'd give it a 3 out of 5. On PSXe's, a 7.5. Yea, I'm a hard ass.

same week. DOA is Tuesday. Order I think is Friday.
I only have money for one.

There's an outside chance I'll get a gift card or something for my Birthday towards the end of the month. That'll determine if I get Order this month or not.

I think the media and this site included are being unfair in regards to the publicity that The Order is getting. The expectations are getting so high that it's bound to fail. Or in others eyes it already has.

Ready at Dawn developed a PS4 game. Their first console game after developing for hand helds. If anything they should be applauded for getting to this point and supporting them based on their achievements even if they don't meet everyone's expectations.

I don't care about Titanfall one bit. Titanfall 2? I could probably get on board with that if they do some things differently.

PGU: Playing Evolve for now until The Order drops. I might get LBP3 since it's on the cheap right now during PSN flash sale.

Evolve is good at what it does. Personally it doesn't really do anything new in the FPS genre so those claims I think are not relevant as its essentially just a boss battle every time. There's specific character classes and abilities . This is stuff games like Borderlands have done forever. Especially when doing raids, do the similarities really shine.

But that's not to degrade the game, I just don't think it's fair to consumers to suggest this is some sort of new experience. Unless Of Course The FPS games they typically play are CoD or BF.

At its core what it does is set you up for the excitement that a boss battle does typically, every match. It's good at that!

I'm enjoying it far more than I thought I would and that's good. The concerns about not so great community players and the hindrance of the ability and character unlocks and how the community goes about achieving said unlocks do exist. They can't be overlooked but they certainly are not the fault of the game design either. It's just a community thing. Something the developers can't help much. But overall it's a great game and provides some fun, solid gameplay with friends.

PSXE has never been "unfair" to The Order. Not ever.

I would say that the article about The Order not struggling for the PS4 To succeed is very unfair for the game and the developer. Again that's putting way too much pressure on a developer who prior has been developing handheld games.

Sony's been riding their coattails too hard then, bigrailer. Sony's marketing push on The Order has been intense over the last year. And the industry at large has been labeling it similarly, as well.

Whether it's "fair" or not, (and forget about that concept altogether in business, by the way) it's the way it is.

Seriously? If you read my first post I addressed all of that. It's not as if I'm singling out one source of media.

This isn't about it being a business either it goes beyond that. This is a game that people want to succeed but it's also become something that HAS to. And it doesn't. It does not need to be perfect nor be Sonys Uncharted for the PS4. And beyond that it's already being written off by others because of this attention. In a sense the media who so dearly says it has to succeed is also saying but "forget that it's not out, it's just not good". And I'm not referring to PSXE so let's get that outta the way.

Essentially the media and that PSXE article is saying "Hey Ready at Dawn, your first console game ever better succeed. You know, if you want the console you are developing it for and Sony to continue their success. So, good luck".

And forget that "it's the way it is". I know that and it's the media's fault which you pretty much made the point of my first post. So thank you. Because it is the media's fault. I know the attention the game is getting which brought this up in the first place.

bigrailer, you can't blame the media for "putting pressure" on a game. It's the media's JOB to cover a game. And how is saying what I said any different than "it's gonna win GotY!" hype?

You can't put pressure on inanimate objects. Such an article certainly doesn't put pressure on the publishers or developers; they know what's at stake better than any of us do. You think they aren't aware of the pressure involved? You think a few words from a few journalists is somehow going to make them more tense? Think again. We have little to no impact on that score.

The media creates headlines direct to potential consumers. The media are those creating this illusion that The Order must do well in order for the PS4 to do well, for example. Ready at Dawn is not saying this journalists are.

Also, it's not about the impact journalists will have on the developers directly. It's the indirect impact of creating that illusion I've spoken of to the consumers. The type of publicity the game is getting is off putting to both consumers who want the game and those who are on the fence. And that impacts the developers.

It's not different saying it will win game of the year, prior to its release. It still puts that pressure on it to be GOTY when in reality it's not out yet so who's to say that? It creates a bar for the game and consumers eat that material up and expectations become unbelievably high.

Of course the publishers and developers know what's at stake. Of course journalists aren't always going to effect the developer or make them more tense. But I think journalists and other media can make developers act out as one of your recent articles regarding click bait proves. But that's not really my point either.

If the media is the sole force of the pressure, Ben, I think it's more than fair to blame them for the pressure.

Your arguments are solid, Big. But it is the medias role to both question, analyse and consider all things going on in their field.
It's how it *should* be.

Oh I realize what the media's role is, I'm not questioning a journalists responsibilities.

Just saying – among other things – this game is being treated unfairly. It's not normal to say a new ip is going to be responsible for a consoles success. On the other end other journalists and media sites are treating it as if it's already failed. And the chances of that happening are higher when you consider the pressure these journalists are putting on it from both spectrums.

I'm sorry, but I'm just going to say it: If you think the media actually puts "pressure" on a video game, you're a fool. All the pressure is already felt; the publishers know their expectations and it doesn't matter what anyone says.

Saying that PlayStation 4 really needs a top-tier exclusive right now isn't wrong, nor is it putting pressure on Ready at Dawn or Sony. Saying PS4 will open itself up for more scrutiny (i.e., not delivering what it promises) after another major exclusive falls a little flat isn't wrong, either. These articles are common sense.

Saying they're "unfair" to a game is beyond stupid. It just is.

Wow Ben you you managed to call me a fool and stupid in one post. Apparently you can't be civil after after all. I've been an active member since 2008 and this is a first.

Fact of the matter is YOU and other journalists are creating a larger expectation. If the media says a game (any game) is a GOTY contender the consumers will expect that. Anything less will be a disappointment even if it scores well in reviews. If you can't see that, then what's the point of your job if you have no impact on the industry?

You didn't just say the PS4 needs a top tier exclusive. You specifically said its success hinges on The Order. Which is in fact unfair for that game.

I'm not sure why you called me a fool or that what I think is stupid but that's unfair too.

I don't think The Order has to do especially well lest the PS4 find itself in trouble. I imagine it'll be a modest hit, commercially, but even if it's not, I don't think it spells trouble for anyone. This isn't like Halo for the original Xbox or Killzone 2 for the PS3 where the console's identity is riding on its success.

As for Titanfall, as much as I loved the game, it really does need a single player campaign in any upcoming sequel. I understood Respawn's reasoning why they excluded it in the original, but they could at least provide a bare bones single player campaign where you can play through the online campaign with bot allies, if only to help you level up if you jump into the game late, or if you don't have internet for some reason.

I think the order will do just fine. Let those who don't have faith in it to be wowed.

PGU. Still playing dying light and loving it, im about 20 or so hours in, there is so much to do. This game is great!!

yeah i with you ben on most of what you said.

i definalely don't think the devs at RAD for the order deserved any of tha crap they got and i think i probably would have raged at everyone too, and i have every hope it the order to be awsome and do great things for the ps4

as for titan fall i didn't play it myself but my mate next door did and i watched him play it a bit on PC and it was okay better than i thought it would be but as for a sequal i don't know if i'd buy it even if it was on the ps4 although i think it would last longer it iwas on the ps4

and then with ubisoft i couldn't agree more ben i've always been of the stand the i buy and most people buy AC for the story mode not the multiplayer and thats the way i see it.

i know people need multiplayer for replay ability and stuff but not everyone wants it but its the old saying of having it and not wanting rather than wanting it and not having it and i get that so have the option there but don't shove it down everyones throat who doesn't want to use it thats what i've always said and i stnad by that

and finally i think evolve looks fine but i didn't like the day 1 DLC strategy that they pulled not cool not cool at all

Personal update i've been back onto rachet 2 on the HD trilogy on the ps3 finishing getting all the platinum bolts and skill points i can get with out too much trouble

thats all from me this week, heres to a good week to all guys

happy gaming
