Ex-Naughty Dog developer, Gabriel Betancourt, came out to share the story of how Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End almost never happened and how a director asserted that the game “sucks.”
Speaking with KiwiTalkz (via PSU), Bentancourt explained that during the demoing phase, another team’s director was asked to weigh in on Uncharted 4, to which this unnamed director didn’t hold back. While he wasn’t there at the time, he heard the story that said director didn’t like the game.
“One of the directors from another team was asked to weigh in, and I wasn’t there, I only heard the story, and that director walked in, in the room full of all these people, he picked up the controller, and he said to everyone: ‘This game sucks.’”
Now, it’s no secret the game underwent a lot of changes during development as leads changed hands from Amy Hennig to Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley during its development. A whole seven months of shot work was scrapped to change things around. Now, to be fair, Uncharted 4 is still highly regarded by both critics and fans, so at least the change in leadership here didn’t sink this ship.
