Ben’s Week In Review: September 7

The week before Destiny and all through the house…

Take-Two better unveil a new Red Dead before the end of the year

I'm just so pumped for a next-gen Red Dead , and all indications are that a new entry is looming on the horizon.

Saying Red Dead Redemption "rejuvenated the Western entertainment genre" is a bold claim (as it doesn't only include video games), but it's not entirely without merit. Don't forget that it really converted some gamers who were – forgive the pun – dead set against the idea of a Western. I've never liked Westerns. With the exception of "Tombstone," I've never seen one I really liked. That's why I was all sorts of skeptical going into RDR, but I emerged a total convert; I reverted to a childhood where you just wanna be an outlaw cowboy. Not my childhood, but you know what I mean.

As much as I love GTA, and as great as GTAV was, I have no doubt that whenever the new Red Dead hits the headlines, it'll be atop my most-wanted list until it arrives. There was a time when Final Fantasy XV would be firmly entrenched in the #1 position but those days are long gone; at this point, even Kingdom Hearts III is ahead of it.

Mortal Kombat is bound to turn some heads in April

Now that we have an official release date for Mortal Kombat X , mark your calendars: That's about when the mainstream press will once again lost their sh**.

Mortal Kombat was the franchise that sparked the video game violence debate, which directly led to ratings and the ESRB. Now, to be clear, I support the ESRB wholeheartedly, as I support the MPAA. However, I have never supported the heavy slant exhibited by the press; a slant that's documented all too well over the years. You can bet that when MKX hits store shelves, the anti-game activists will be lying in wait with torches and pitchforks. It'll be a freakin' free-for-all if any of those nasty Fatalities or Brutalities ends up on the news. I will add, though, that NetherRealm may have gone a touch too far with this new entry.

Some of the footage I've seen is just plain…unsettling.

Personal gaming update

Well, of course I have to be playing Destiny . I got the Limited Edition in the mail on Friday and I know Activision is going to want that review up ASAP after the embargo. But once I've played it enough to formulate an accurate, professional analysis, I'll be reverting to Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition , as I said in that whatcha playin' article. Still, it's pretty hard to put down Velocity 2X , which is one of the most polished and entertaining games of 2014. It's fantastic on PS4 as well, if you're wondering.

As for Madden NFL 15 , it's good but I just don't have time for it. I can't deal with sports simulators these days; they just require way too much time. No, I'm fine with playing a few rounds of Madden '93 on the ol' SNES if I've got a little spare time. 😉

IT'S ALMOST DESTINY TIME … awwwAHawwwwWWWahAww (that's the Halo title song Monk awww'ing) euphoric ambrosia of life ..

anyway, I picked up Red Dead for $5 this week. I played for about an hour last night and really dug the western vibe. Certain things about the graphics are pretty dated, like the character models and some animations, sound effects didn't seem too pronounced either, but the large spacious western landscapes are still great. The voice over work was still Rockstar solid. I look forward to messing around with it some more. ANd I do want to see a proper sequel on PS4.

I'm all about trying out MK X come release. FINISH HIM!

PGU: I've been all over the map this week. I got NYOTENGU in DOA5 U. SHe's a powerhouse, slower, but still a powerhouse. She has some fun and unique techniques. I didn't expect to like her so much seeing that she's basically a revamped Tengu from DOA2 but I think if she released much sooner I could've invested a lot of time into her. She also takes the DOA mantle for being the most erotic character of the DOA lot. I'm sure DOA pervs really got the money's worth this time.
moving on.
Splinter Cell Blacklist keeps impressing me. This time with it's story telling. I played a campaign mission in a train yard that had me co-opting with Briggs (once again). The story so had me convinced they were gonna kill Briggs or place him in a reverse scenario that Sam and him were in just a few missions prior. It like egged you on to believe something bad was gonna happen resulting in either Sam being placed in his like-position or Briggs getting death, but they didn't. It was cool because the writer knew how to keep you on edge with it, tempting you to believe that was the route he was gonna go with it but didn't. It was suitably nice and tension building to the level. It's a great game.

I think I'd rather see a full on sequel FatherSun.

and man the Destiny hype is being felt everywhere. The DualShockers site has gone as far as replacing their 'o' in Shocker with the Destiny planet (wait for the whole page to load and look at the upper left title banner).

Don't know if i'm the only one but i enjoyed red dead revolver and while RDRedemption felt a little too GTA-esque for me, it was still a good bit of fun. Really intrigued for the next installment. So first it was revolver, then redemption and now the latest could be … REVENGEANCE!!! Ha! And yes, i am most unrepentant for the 'reveal'.

PGU
Started Ni No Kuni and 115 hrs later … platinum. Almost forgot how much fun JRPGs were. Even with all the grinding. I remember reading an article somewhere regarding Japanese developers who were complaining about the difficulty in crafting towns for rpgs. While i don't how long its development process was, i thought that NNK was pretty well done. In FF13, the rpg world didn't FEEL as diverse and expansive as a rpg world SHOULD feel. I mean it's frickin' Final Fantasy, so where was the fantasy or the wonderment? Where was the awe dammit! Sorry….
In the process of playing Darksiders 2. It's a great game so far. However, Mark Hamill's depiction of a 'Watcher' in the first game made a huge impact leaving DS2 sorely lacking in that department.

Tuesday is going to be pandemonium. Activision is going churn some heavy profit this quarter. I've preorder my non special edition. So this is what it's like to be a part of the gaming masses.

PGU: Accomplished a lot of back logging these past few weeks. Almost done with Second Son. There were some points when I didn't want to be evil, but the other 97% was pretty entertaining. I've already concluded what would be needed to purchase an Infamous 4. The core mechanic of SS is spot on though!!
Golden Abyss is still awesome. What a visually pleasing game.
I won't catch up with everything before Tuesday, but this is more progress than I though I would do.

Hell for all the pansies that can't handle the animated blood and gore of this awesome looking MK game, i'm sure there's a my little pony game somewhere out there for ya.

I was really pleased with Red Dead until shortly after getting to Mexico, it started to drag and then the ending got spoiled so I never finished it. I'd much rather see Manhunt and Bully before RDR2

I grew up on MK and it's still amazing but I dunno it just isn't right for me anymore. Maybe it's cuz my gamer buddy I grew up with isn't around to make me want to learn the moves.

I'm juggling a bunch of games but I'm stoked to jump into Destiny and try to make a teeny tiny name for myself in that world, approximately 2 hours at a time.

Jumping into your Fairy Fencer F review the only thing I can leak is that it's going to feel very familiar to fans of Neptunia, no more than that. I'm hoping to have the review up right up after the embargo lifts.

Metro, all week. Nothing else.

I'll probably watch a friend stream Destiny so I can stay home and continue to play Metro.

RDR2… Hm… That game is going to be something else. RDR was definitely one of the last gens defining gems. A sequel may or may not be as impactful. I still look forward to it though.

I would love to play another Red Dead, especially if it were built for the new consoles. Red Dead Redemption was one of my favorite games of last gen.

PGU;I've been playing all sorts of games this month. Dead Space for a while, then GoW:Ascention, some flow, then Halo:CE Anniversary and Halo 2. I'm going to try and finish Halo 2 tomorrow. After that it's Destiny time.
