Ben’s Week In Review: August 31

So, what are you doing this Labor's Day weekend?

Anybody else a little skeptical about No Man's Sky?

Okay, here's the thing: I know No Man's Sky is immensely ambitious and if it's done correctly, and if Hello Games delivers on all their lofty promises, it'll be one of the defining games of the new generation.

However, all this crowing about the size is starting to worry me. We're hearing ridiculous numbers associated with the game, like it taking billions of years just to visit every planet for one second. Of course, that's a little misleading for a variety of reasons, but then comes this story of "quiet moments of discovery ." I'm wondering just how populated and dynamic these planets will be, just how different they'll be from one another, and I still don't know what the goal of the game actually is. I'm worried that we're just going to be flying around and checking out relatively empty planets that have a few different plants and animals to see.

This has always been my problem with making a game so gigantic: The bigger it is, the longer and harder the developers have to work to bring it to life. Given what Hello Games is trying, I think they might be overreaching by a lot

Co-op in Dragon Age? Sure, I'm up for that

I've never understood how competitive multiplayer would work in a role-playing game like Dragon Age: Inquisition and truth is, I don't want to know. I just know it doesn't fit.

I know Ubisoft ditched competitive multiplayer action for the two Assassin's Creed games this year, and now BioWare says the new Dragon Age will boast co-op, too . Teaming up with friends to go adventuring in an RPG is my idea of fun, even if I'd still rather go at it solo. Over the years, I've found that the only multiplayer I really care about is co-op, and it helps if it's not a shooter. A more repetitive, dull, boring experience, I cannot imagine at this point. If BioWare gives us enough content for the co-op component, I'll be happy with that.

Personal gaming update

CounterSpy is quite entertaining and highly recommended if you want a great stealth/action blend. It's not long enough and the "procedurally generated" feature doesn't mean quite as much when you see it in practice, but it's still a really fun game. Obviously, I'll be spending the majority of my time with Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition . On the one hand, it's kind of comical that we waited a good 15 years for a game that probably could've been made 10 years ago, but on the other, it's tough to stop playing.

I'm all about the Crusader right now, although I'm wondering if he's a little overpowered, as I haven't even come close to dying just yet. But there are lots more difficulty levels, of course, and I don't really want a chore, anyway. 🙂

I'm worried about the same for NMSky. Co-op in DA is gonna be stupid since it's separate from the main quest, I mean what's the point?

Haven't had a chance to play much of anything lately. That sucks. I have games, I just don't have time. Hopefully Destiny makes me play anyway.

Is anything else coming in September?

@World

Your wording seems odd. I understand what you mean of course but a true wordsmith can easily twist them.

You were riding? To my knowledge men don't ride. We get ridden. Straight men anyway. For instance, Were you riding her as she wore a strap on backwards?

Don't mind me, I am extremely exhausted mentally and physically at this time. And yes, I do realize that this comment is days late and more than a few dollars short. Lol. But I do hold hope that you as a PSX collaborator will be notified of this response. This is a feature that I and many others would benefit from on this website. It would definitely drive traffic. Make it Happen Captain!

No Man's Sky seems fascinating. I'll remain that way until it actually lands. I'll probably try out Diablo III at some point. Not that I expect to be all that taken by it but I'm a little curious to see how I react.

PGU: Been playing a variety of things, which includes TLoU remaster. It feels real nice and slick now. I'm impressed by some subtle lighting nuances that I can't confirm if they existed in the PS3 original. The game does a good job at emulating radiosity from off certain objects. When you shine your flashlight directly at an object that is saturated with a color, like red, orange (wall tiles or a palette jack), even blue or whatever, the light bouncing from off that object that indirectly illuminates the environment outside of the flashlight's attenuation will carry the color of that object with it. Therefore say, shining your light directly at the orange palette jack will cause an orange'ish glow to the ambient light immediately surrounding that area. It's an advanced effect that fakes ray tracing. It's something I directly criticized that newer CoD AW multiplayer trailer for not having on display on one of it's levels. And here, lo and behold, that effect is being simulated in TLoU. Pretty cool.

I also picked up Resistence 3 for $5. Gotta say. It's my favorite of the series. It's visual style gets me every time. It has some real pasty textures but it makes up for it in other ways.

Resistance 3 was also my favourite of the trilogy.

Dunno how different this new Diablo III could be but I got through the review of the first version and stopped there. Despite being all intricate it's still basically the same ancient isometric game we would call an indie today.

Resistance 3 is great to pick up any time I find.

I respect Diablo for being what it is, isometric and classic and all. There's many game formula's out their that just don't need to be re-invented to be enjoyed.
I know I like fighting games. That formula is about as old as they come. But with that age there's a whole lot of refinement and "intricate" elements that appeal directly to those who like it for what it is.

If No Man's Sky is about exploration and interaction with different planet mechanics, I'm ok with that. It may seem vague on gameplay at this stage, but I'm willing to give it a try for being ambitious and different.

In an interview on gamespot they say:you can do mining /bounty hunting/trade so you can upgrade your armor/spaceship,there will be space-battle but also on the planets itself.
There will be underwater area's and much more, this is not a game with quests, this is a game to explore, searching for stuf so you can trade/upgrade so you can get a better ship to get to other planets. The bounty hunting and space battles and dangerous animals on planets will bring some action to it.The images of the underwater area's are great, maybe i'm wrong about this, but i have a good feeling about the gameplay,i want to search and explore, upgrade and discover

Ok, so I'm all over AC4 now. Loving to be a pirate:)
Ocasionally I'll play TloU again coz I just bought Sony wireless pulse headset elite edition. There is a special preset for TloU and the 7.1 sound is just….. WOW!
Tried also P.T this week and I noped few times. This game is just freaking terifying. I cannot do longer seatings than 30 minutes…
That will last me until FC4 coz I am not planning anything else this year or maybe Unity.
D3, Destiny? No.

yeah i hear your fears and concerns and i can see the legitimacy of it but i'm quietly optimistic as for the co-op stuff i'm all for that i think thats gunna become more previlent in the new gen of consoles along with the open worldish type stuff.

There was a time when buying a game meant doing everything there was in it. 100%. And then doing in again and again. My cousin and I have seen every ending for Twisted Metal 2 and 3 countless time. The same goes for Metal Gear Solid PS1. You can imagine what grand project FFVII and FFVIII were. Since then I've held on to that 100% effort, but with so many games and so many of them going open world it kills me to have to accept that there are areas and items that will go unfound. Maybe we should have saw this one coming. Developers would have done it earlier if they had the capabilities. I guess there are worse problems.

PGU: Killed Crysis 3 in a few days. It was nice. I may go as far to give it a solid 9/10. It's not breaking any thresholds, but it's not doing anything wrong either.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is proof that the Vita needs more support. That game looks so good and it was a launch title!! Indi games are great, but the Vita will go out untapped at this rate. Once that's done it's onto FEZ.

The PS4 is there to let me go through Infamous in evil A&#H!*# (Thanks FFVII for the censor theme) mode. All this and more hopefully before Sept 9th. It's the end of summer cram session.

No man's sky seems cool to me. I like that it's not entirely over the top. The good ole argument of "you wouldn't know a good day without a bad one". You wouldn't appreciate a lush planet if all were just that. It wouldn't feel special. Like earth compared to the moon. Like Saturn's rings compared to a dead planet. The point of the game does seem to remain unanswered. Perhaps there isn't one. I'll enjoy it regardless. Just for trying to create something unique and different. Like flower.

PGU: AC:BF has reminded me why this is probably the last time I'll invest in PC hardware. I'm so pissed off. This game, nearly a year later, remains broken. V-sync ruins it and disabling it ruins the game (Holy screen tearing). Anyway, I spent nearly a week (2hrs/day tops) trying to get through the main campaign. Guess what? Start up my PC Annnnd my whole saved game is gone. It identifies a saved game, uplay shows 78% progress, but the saved file in-game is 0%. Seriously? Ubisoft only has a meaningless "sorry" to ease my frustration. This game singlehandedly wasted more of my time trying to get it to run right than actually playing it (running Radeon PRO to force OpenGL triple buffering, dynamic vsync, different settings to prevent this annoying FPS lock from 60 to a gameplay ruining 30fps within seconda). I'm done. Screw the PC games unless… Unless there's something super awesome. Even then, I'm not investing in my PC much, if anything, for gaming.

It's not just the Crusader class Ben. I didn't die on my Wizard until I had put the game on Master difficulty. Oh and I sent you a gift hehe.

Yeah, don't play Diablo 3 on the lower difficulties, it is just too easy.

I'm on hard at the moment, but will be moving up again soon. Not one single boss fight has made me use any strategy at all, just slugging away at health.
