Ben’s Week In Review: August 10

Several significant game announcements this week, and we'll start with:

Assassin's Creed Rogue makes me wish I had more time during the fall

I know I want Assassin's Creed: Unity , especially because it's designed specifically for next-gen consoles. I honestly believe it will be one of the very first titles released that makes me say, "Yep, this feels 'next-gen' to me."

But now I think I'd also want to play the recently revealed Assassin's Creed Rogue , which is the franchise entry designed for the PS3 and 360. I know it's not cutting-edge like Unity but that doesn't mean it'll be a throwaway title; quite the contrary, in fact. Based on the information we have so far , it sounds like a fantastic adventure with a lot of great twists. The idea of an Assassin going off the reservation, so-to-speak, and siding with the Templars is very intriguing. It's even more interesting for those of us who have followed the series storyline since the beginning.

Sadly, fall is when I have the least amount of time. 'sigh'

Resident Evil REmake isn't exactly new, but it'd probably be a better option than RE7

Resident Evil 6 wasn't a bad game but it suffered from a definite identity crisis. Because of that, I'd rather see another remake as opposed to Resident Evil 7 , which I'm afraid would take another step toward action, and away from survival/horror. I also never got a chance to play the remake when it arrived for the GameCube – just because I refused to buy that system – so the idea of a Resident Evil HD Remaster (which is basically what this is; it's not exactly a remake, I guess) doesn't turn me off. If you can't manage to keep the fans happy with new entries, might as well remake a classic, right?

Perhaps Square Enix can take a cue from Capcom. Don't bother with Final Fantasy XV ; just give us Final Fantasy XII HD Remaster , or something. I'm still holding out hope for a FFVII remake but that's just because I'm stupid. 😉 For the horror fanatics out there, I doubt they'd pass up the opportunity to play the original Resident Evil classic with modern-day tech. I mean, what's wrong with that?

Personal gaming update

I really tried to get more into Road Not Taken , mostly because I really appreciated the effort Spry Fox put into making that unique adventure. Besides, I often pine for more cerebral experiences and I like the kinds of puzzles that you must conquer in this game. It just got a little too frustrating and tedious for my taste, despite the developer's solid product. So, I'm back to trying to finish Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance on Extreme difficulty, and then maybe I can push more into GTAV. I also can't wait for Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition on PS4; it's part of the reason I played BG:DA again. You know, to get me psyched up for an old-school dungeon-crawler…see, there's a method to my madness. 😉

I'm also interested in trying that new digital offering, The Last Tinker: City of Color . I'm not a huge platforming fan but I do miss those old-fashioned straight-up platformers. Looks like this one could be great fun.

AC games require a serious time investment and it's hard enough for me to just stay current with just one core release each year. I'm not willing to give the franchise double time.
Black Flag was a surprise and unexpectantly everything I valued most about it had little or nothing to do with what the series had consistently offered time in and time out. I found myself most compelled by the pirate-specific elements. The stuff like managing the Jackdaw. Attacking forts from the sea. Exploring sunken ruins. It was when the game went back to it's roots where I felt my interest waining. I somewhat wish there was a direct sequel to the pirate formula of AC's play. While I think Unity will impress me with it's tech I'm holding reservations that this 7th entry in the franchise (each game yielding 30 or more hours of play) may give me cause to push away from the table if I don't see enough new and interesting. We'll see. I know enough to hold off until it goes cheap. It's too easy to wait when you know the game will go cheap fast.
I bought and enjoyed RE Remake on the GC back in the day. Can't say I'm ready to do it again though. RE has pretty much been a franchise I've abandoned. At least ever since the superlative RE4 on GC.

I did play a few dungeon crawls on PS2, like Balder's Gate, I can't say I'm a big fan of the genre. If I ever try Diablo III it'll be on PC. That's for dang sure.

PGU:
I feel ready to pause on my time with Injustice. I'm ready to see other games. And I have. I'm playing SC Blacklist. I have to say I'm quite impressed by the overall game thus far. I love the hardcore stealth aspect that the game allows me to play as. Many modern games have made me forget the strength of the SC series. Sam Fisher knows stealth like few others. It was like the past revisiting me as I died time and time again due to being too impulsive. It's also weird getting used to some of the changed control mechanics that the series had imprinted on my brain. Using the LS button to stand and crouch was hard getting used to. Same with using the O button to snap to cover. So far while the game doesn't seem to make big use of shadow like the prior games the cover system seems much more important. It actually feels more realistic to me like that. Before. Areas in Splinter Cell seemed synthetically dark in spots just to allow it's game design to work. Levels just sort of had a patchwork of shadowed dead zones for Sam to hang out in. So far Blacklist feels more believable with leveraging cover. Anyway. So far so good. And I'm real glad I've got Sam back.

Don't bother with ffxv? I'm a big fan of old school ff n RPGs but how can we say "don't bother" at this point when the game has been announced for over eight years? How about we suggest Square Enix to go back to their roots with ffxvi instead of telling then to scrap a game that's been in production forever. Just because they made comments about admitting their roots doesn't mean they should just scrap a long made project. Like me, there r many that are interested to see how ffxv turns out.

I'd like to get back to the AC game I started (there's so many I forget the name) but eeehhh it's hard to find blocks of time to invest.

I finished FFX, X-2, then listened to the audio drama. Well, the story ain't over so I think a love letter to FF fans should come in the form of FFX-3. I know they said it won't but I always know better than them. It could be a more classic styled ATB battler without any excuses and just as epic as FFX. 🙂

I'm going way out on a limb here and along with some of you and getting Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD. I've always avoided those games because I didn't want my cool FF mixed in with silly Disney. But I also turned 33 and am feeling a little like I need some magic in my life. Maybe a mix of Final Fantasy and Disney is just what the doctor ordered.

I've wandered back into Fallout 3's wastes and I'm being a total dickhole.

Do you succumb to the dickhole feeling b/c you're playing an old game that's long since been over and done with?
If so I can relate. The clutches of Skyrim are currently stronger than any other game I trying to play through right now.

Or are you being a duichole with in Fallout 3

That reminds me I still need to play through Infamous SS in dickhole mode.

PGU: I got my platinum in Bound by Flame and have already beat the remastered Last of Us on normal. So now I'm split between Left Behind and beating the main story on Survivor, 1/3 done so far.
I would have considered playing on Grounded, but I read the clickers are much harder to sneak by and they're annoying enough as it is. Not to mention it's hard to manage your health when the only indicator is which of 3 colours the light bar on the controller is.
I have Diablo 3 preordered, although I don't get why the store has preorder bonuses yet EB games doesn't. That would have made me pick the store except it says the file is 26G's so I don't want to fill up my drive that fast. I'll most likely be getting Unity, even though the French setting doesn't excite me nearly as much as Black Flag did.

Gamecube was wicked, fanboys really miss out on things.

One of my dorm mates had a gamecube, so I got to play that.

But no, I never bought one. I was a poor student back then and could afford basically nothing. I was already lucky to own both a PS2 and an XBOX. A third system would have destroyed my budget, and I likely would have never gotten my work done. lol

I didn't know you were still into Assassins Creed Ben.

I am not really that hyped for Unity. Just because the time period doesn't interest me.

I'm also not pumped for Rogue either, even though I loved the Pirate theme of the last game, I just can't get into the whole idea of playing a Templar.

I used to say AC was my favorite franchise. I felt rather meh after AC3 and never even tried AC4.
