Ben’s Week In Review: July 20

So, anyone staying up all night to play the Destiny beta? I have no inclination to do that, but I hear people are pretty hooked.

The Last Of Us: Remastered frames per second issue…is it really worth all this fuss?

I don't think I've ever heard of a game garnering so much attention for one particular technical element.

The Last Of Us: Remastered offers an upgraded 60 frames per second, but as the developers announced this week, players can choose to lock in at 30FPS . This has resulted in yet another rash of debate, over whether or not 30 frames per second is quite simply inferior the whole way 'round. Some say it is, while others claim the lower FPS rate is better for cut-scenes and CGI sequences. And as TLoU is very cinematic in nature, some players may not want to mess with the original setup.

To be perfectly frank, I can't believe people can talk about this stuff for so long. I guess you either need a lot of free time on your hands, or you need to be more of a technophile (which I am not). I just know I don't really care one way or the other, provided the game is enjoyable. I also know all the Uncharted games ran at 30FPS and they remain some of the most technically impressive games I've ever played, so…

I'm actually excited about the new Doom

It's great that id Software finally got around to announcing the new Doom , because I'm looking forward to it. I've heard they're adding some pretty intense melee combat to go along with the standard FPS action, but I also hope they retain that horror-esque vibe. Doom III was one of my favorite games because it blended the FPS and horror genres. It was just so wonderfully atmospheric and the campaign was thrilling from start to finish. I'm sure the designers will put more of an emphasis on multiplayer this time around because it's a shooter, and they have no choice.

But even so, I'd really like to see an upgraded version of Doom III and if they want to toss in more brutality and craziness, fine. So long as it's not just a generic shooter, I'll be satisfied. I like FPSs but these days, they really need to have a certain vibe to keep me interested. Wolfenstein: The New Order 's vibe was simply that it was an old-school FPS, and I missed that. 😉

Personal gaming update

Sniper Elite III is a good game but I'm going through Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance on Extreme now, and I just gotta finish. My girlfriend is having a blast with Sniper , though, as she really likes that series; it plays to her strategic and planning strengths. Me, I'm tentatively intrigued by Natural Doctrine , which could be a great turn-based strategy experience. Haven't seen many such games in recent memory, you know? I'm just a little worried about some of the import reviews I've seen…some say the game is more trouble than it's worth.

It'll be back to GTAV after BG:DA, and then I wait until Dragon Age: Inquisition in October.

60fps is always more impressive and smooth, no question about it. Going back to 30 proves how slow and unreactive it feels.

I'm stoked for the new Doom too but I hope it's a newly invented horror shooter for its own sake. Doesn't need multiplayer but I'll play the beta anyway.

PGU: I'm playing Soul Reaver on DC (60fps thank you) wih some much improved graphics thanks to my VGA Box. It really makes the game gorgeous, shows current gen a thing or two. Feels like a prototype Darksiders.

I beat Wolfenstein today! It's a lot more than just an old school experience, it brings old school familiarity up to date in the best ways possible. It has the best campaign in an FPS in many years and gets better with time. Machine Games is incredible.

Also Destiny Beta is pretty compelling after I tried Dust and Blacklight and saw how pathetic they were by comparison. I'm telling ya, I may not be against this game. I may want it.

Sorry no Sunday Meditation because the evil Windows 8 decided to make my mouse cursor and buttons just straight up disappear from the screen.

I'm not losing sleep over Destiny. I liked the beta but honestly I was sort of hoping for more new areas to see. But, yah, I know, beggars can't be choosers either.
I look forward to the full game. But it's hard for me to tell just how involved I'll be with it overtime. I know at the least I'll get at least one full game's worth of game time out of it, even if I don't do everything. Similar to when WoW hit the scene, I did stop and get it right away and dumped about 50-60hours into it. Once I felt the overall experience and what it offers I decided to move onto other games. It's hard for me to stay too exclusive to any single game. Not when there's so many amazing games out there.

PGU: DOA5 U, Pinball Arcade: Black Knight 2000 table, Xenogears, and some other random crap. Oh yah. I tried my PS3 copy of Splinter Cell Blacklist out. I liked what I played pretty well and then determined I'd rather play it on PC with all the usual bells and whistles. So I added $6 of trade-in value to my Destiny reserve (basically paid off now) and then snagged Blacklist for PC. After 4 or so patches and $7.50 later, the game crashes immediately after booting EVERY time. I don't have some bizarre PC setup either. It should work. When I get the time I'll try to figure out a fix. Not happy. End of story.

Well MS's problems get worse and worse. They too lost 1 billion dollars, and expected to lose another this coming fiscal year. That and they email their employee's the morning with some BS statement about stuff and ending it with "Oh…by the way…You're fired…So, uh, yeah…" 32,000 people laid off from various parts of MS along with the closing of an entertainment branch AND another branch. Funny stuff.

Played a lot of The Last Of Us this week. Kinda went against my plans but hey, its been fun. Grounded mode isn't much different than Survivor, but eh. More DOA5U as well. Started getting irritated with all the spammers online so I've been using my best character and because of that I'm on a 12 win streak. That game is so damn fun. One more ending for Silent Hill 3 and I get the platinum. Can't believe I have to farm damage to Heather though. Talk about annoying.

Dark Souls 2's been on the list this week too. Getting a new character to NG+6 before the DLC releases. I'd like the DLC to be challenging and not easy, so the fact the game stops getting harder after +6 is the reason. The lastest patch made it slightly more playable as well. Katana's finally swing faster than giant hammers!

Although I completely disagree with Bandosoft's DLC policy and lie, I'm a sucker for the Souls series and really don't have a choice in the matter. I'd end up buying it one way or another. Still think its completely BS how they handled it though.

Hope everyone elses week's been pretty awesome.

The FPS debate is much more of the same arguments regarding this game in other ways. It's too pricy to some, a great opportunity for others, and lastly an amazing combo with a great price. In the end, was it worth all the controversy? Don't think so.

I'm just so disappointed that I can't Watchdogs. From the side missions, the onlne gaming (so glitchy;especially in cars) in single player missions, and the overall satisfaction is lacking. Anyone else feel the same way about this game? Probably was my mistake of taking on second son before this game. Either way, anxiously waiting for my digital copy of TLoU to claim my gaming sessions.

The Destiny beta is extremely polished with tight shooting controls. They are doing the little things right such as making your team members' names with green lettering instead of blue so it is easy to find them. The respawn system is extremely well implemented in addition to the directional map. Thoroughly enjoying it.

I am not excited for the new Doom game until they can actually deliver a new game worthy of the Doom series. Time will tell but I do not have high hopes.

Finished Wolf Among Us this week and wow does TellTale know how to weave a story and deliver a great series of games. Very impressed.

Sniper Elite looks like a lot of fun! I will keep it on my radar. To much money going to Destiny Digital Guardian Edition, The Last of Us Remastered, Diablo III Ultimate Evil Edition and this close to picking up Wolfenstein The New Order.

Destiny rules my gaming time right now. It's just so fun and empowering. Love hovering above a group of enemies and slamming my Titan down killing them all. I can't believe they threw in a Walker as well!! Like I said Destiny has GOTY 2014 written all over it. Destiny reminds me of a Mass Effect FPS! Such a beautiful game. Hopefully future updates/DLC bring space dog fighting battles.

PGU: Even after having played the Stick of Truth I needed an RPG fix so I bought Bound by Flame.
It's not the prettiest game ever, but I enjoyed Of Orcs and Men so I'm showing my support for a smaller studio.
