Ben’s Week In Review: August 26

September is just about here; more big releases and the Tokyo Game Show. 🙂

Yes, the girls in DoA aren't normal…but so what?

I'm sorry, I know I'm probably opening myself up for plenty of flak, but I don't see the problem with those oversexed Dead or Alive girls. At the same time, if anybody wants to make a game with half-naked men, fine. I still say there's a whole lot of exposed beefcake in gaming history; the majority of heroes are the quintessential lantern-jawed, muscular dudes that women tend to like. But the point is, we all know the DoA chicks are unrealistic. We get it. None of us are going, "Gee, yeah, women should look like that!" At the same time, I'm not 100% buying what Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi said in regards to it being "just a cultural thing."

I understand the statement but to those who have a problem with those DoA ladies, it sort of sounds like, "Well, this is just the way we do things over here, so tough." The comment needed to be a touch more sensitive, I think. Still, I don't really think the DoA girls are damaging in some way; I don't see DoA5 being a brainwashing device for anyone, even teens. It's so over-the-top unrealistic that it's impossible to view it as anything but silly, campy sex appeal. Far more benign than things routinely found in movies.

So when FFXIII-3 is announced, will you be excited?

It's probably inevitable that another sequel will be announced this week during the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary celebration. They say to expect Lightning's "new direction" to be unveiled on September 1 and the way the announcement was worded, it's hard to believe it's just more downloadable content for FFXIII-2. And as I said, the evidence is pretty clear . Now, I'm on the fence: I'm somehow a big fan of FFXIII-2…and not a big fan of FFXIII-2. I hate that it's called "Final Fantasy" because to me, that's not what FF should be. At the same time, if I just put that title out of my head and pretend it's a new IP or something, I love it. I still say that game gets 9+ scores from just about everywhere if it simply had a different title.

So in that way, I want FFXIII-3. Still, I'm not sure if Lightning has the endurance and appeal to last through another story. And based on the comments to that questioning article , it seems most fans have the same concerns. Maybe it's an opportunity for the writers to launch her into the "legend" category of the franchise, I don't know.

Personal gaming update

Just playing Darksiders II and Sleeping Dogs , both of which are great. I don't really have much interest in continuing Mugen Souls , although I imagine those who are more into the anime style will really like it. I do plan to give you a Transformers: Fall of Cybertron review this week, and September is looking pretty active. There's Borderlands 2 , which I should also be getting early, and the two fighting games, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Dead or Alive 5 .

Also, if you haven't already, you should pay more attention to our Twitter feed , which has become a lot more active as of late. I'm trying to follow a lot of industry people and personalities, along with developers and publishers, so you should pop in to check out what I might be saying to people like David Jaffe, Jo Garcia, Ian Bogost, Ali Hillis, Jane McGonigal, Jason Rubin, Jenova Chen, Evan Wells, etc. And it's feasible that should I learn something interesting, it may first go on Twitter…

What if… Brace yourselves…

Lightnings story continues in FF Versus XIII!? I know I'm being ridiculous, but just imagine. However Versus is the new DNF so I don't see that happening.

Now that anybody can time travel just because they think it might be an okay idea that's not outside the realm of possibility.

From what I tried of FF13-2 I liked so I'd like to see FF13-3. But I think I'm more excited for FFX HD.

PGU: I played VF5 FS last night for the first time this week and got worked hardcore, even lost a rank. I'll need to be more consistent in practicing if I want to progress more competively. But I think I'm ready for a little VF down time anyway. I've got a little extra time on my hands because I finished Summer quarter. I think I want to get moving on some 3D projects I've had cooking. OTher than that, I tried the new Madden demo. I liked it pretty well. The new lighting engine is great. The physics are nice, still wonky at times, but nice, probably stuff that'll strut it's stuff next-gen. Anyhow, I look forward to the Transformers review. I thought the demo was actually pretty cool, surprisingly even. Sort of felt like Halo but with transformers and from the third person. I love that it's true to it's Hasbro roots and not the movies.

Did you ever play the first Transformers: war for Cybertron game? If not it's worth checking out if your a Teansformers fan. It's got co-op online and off up to 3 players which was excellent, the story is true to Hasbro as you mentioned, and will make any fan happy, and the transforming is *sexy*! 😉 plus the mp was super addictive and there's a wave mode as well.

I havnt picked up Fall of Cybertron yet mainly because I'm trying to get through AC: Revelations, but also because of there not being co-op. That actually is what prompted me to buy the first. So I'm not in a hurry to get it as I can't play it with friends anyways. But I hear the mp is really good.

I'm sad that Ben didn't mention me T.T

To no one's surprise no I won't be happy when FFXIII-3 is announced. I believe they should spend that time working on finishing Versus and maybe start on some future titles like KH3 rather than force feeding the fans. It shouldn't have to take 3 titles to like a series or character.

To be fair to Team Ninja, that IS how they do things over there. And I don't think the thought police get up in arms over it either, so there's a certain cultural aspect as to what's okay and what isn't. It's weird that DOA bears the brunt of the outrage when most fighting games do the same thing, DOA just gets that extra oomph out of it with the bouncing.

A little piece of me will die again when FFXIII-3 is announced, but let's all hope that they mean it when they say "new direction" because the last two directions were going the wrong direction, namely backward. I never thought I'd live to see the day an FF game became an automatic cheap/used buy.

I'm plowing away at the backlog, alternating between Arkham Asylum and Hyperdimension 2. Also I got the side scroller Bloodrayne free off PSPlus; great game that. Makes me want to break out Bloodrayne 2 on my Xbox and turn on the boob enhancer patch. (What? It's almost DOA5 time.)

You know with square a "new direction" probably means action RPG? And by action RPG I mean making a game as close to God of War and Devil may cry they can.

I doubt its the direction of classic JRPGs 🙁 Lets hope its just some stupid cameo in FFvs13 but is very very small….but even asking for that I know if square put her in vs13 they would probably replace the main character with her, and further stream line the combat. Gah I hate Square.

I don't have a problem with the DOA girls. The game has always been a great fighter and that's what really matters. Why can't we have something pretty to look at when we're playing too.

Hmmm….FFXIII-3, I still have not gotten around to trying to finish XIII. The problem is I have to start over. So it's something I'm not really looking forward to. I would rather see Squeenix put the time into something better like a new game in one of their other great franchises and maybe finishing Versus if it even really exists still.

PGU:

Vita: I've been really playing the hell out of Unit 13. I've beat 22 out of the 36 missions with 5 stars on each of them. I've also beat 4 out of the 9 HVT. It's funny cause I just barely realized you can change up your weapons. lol. This may be my 2nd Vita platinum. I'm at 40% with 22/44 of the trophies unlocked. The rest of them are pretty easy just will take some practice.

PS3: I started Call of Juarez: The Cartel last week but had to give up on it because a level late in the game would not load for me. I tried it a few times and nothing would happen. It basically looked like it glitched with a few colored blocks on the screen, the subtitles, and you could hear them talk but it would never load correctly for me to play. Luckily the game was garbage anyways that it didn't bother me not to finish.

I finished Jurrasic Park and man that game had way to many hiccups. Framerate issues were a big problem. The story was pretty boring too. I would say at least the dinosaurs looked cool.

I've been working on Max Payne 3 this week which has been a challenge. I've had problems with the cutscenes playing and only the background sounds work. You can see lips moving but no voices. Then when I'd restart it would put me back at the last checkpoint which of course was the end of the last level. I also have problems with the controls feeling a little tankish some times. Overall the game has still been fun.

Last but not least I've been vegging on some MW3. It's been double weapon xp week so what the hell right. I actually prestiged for the 2nd time which is a first for me in COD games. Usually I prestige once and than quit playing. I think I just look at it differently this time. It's some quick mindless fun which is nice to have sometimes.

I want Ffxiii-3 because it will wrap up the trilogy nicely if they do it right.

I have never been into doa so I have only one comment…..the women are very beautiful.

PGU
I had phenomenal week gaming. I picked up sleeping dogs and transformers fall of Cybertron!! They are both amazing games. Tfoc has exceptional graphics and is a true successor to twfc. This game is way more interesting with nice varied combat and tight control. Metroplex is a sight to behold! The Combaticons are very welcome addition. Vortex is a helicopter and jet plane. It's cool jumping off a platform and having transform into a helicopter.and then by pressing l1 to have him transform into a jet. Sideswipe has a cool cloaking ability which allows for awesome stealth gameplay with from behind executions! This is a fantastic and extremely fun game.
Sleeping dogs is also extremely addicting with great hand to hand combat. Played for 5 hours tonight and had trouble quitting. The gunplay takes a back seat but is done very well with slow mo if you vault over cover allowing you to take out the enemy. The story is great and wei shen is an interesting character. There is a ton to do from racing, enforcing and both police and triad jobs which unlock skills for.both. i hope they make a sequel.

its FF so of course people are going to get excited about it!
however that said i have to wonder if and or when fans will get tired of being bent over………
pisses me off to no end how people whine that they wont talk about versus 13.
you do realize that there not talking about it because your still buying their other crap right?
if people said thats it were not buying any $E games till versus 13 is out, id release tomorrow!

sleeping dogs is yet another game i cant believe the reviews its been getting!
i mean its buggy as hell, repetitive as hell, poor controls, boring level design, boring predictable story.
those deserve a 9!?
seriously!
really makes me wonder what some publishers include with their games………..

right, so a game thats buggy as hell, repetitive as hell, has a really poor predictable story, and is just poorly made deserves a 9?
so then what do games that dont have those things deserve?
if sleeping dogs is a 9/10 than dakrsiders 2 is a 50/10!

I think almost all Japanese AV idol all has natural boobs and only a few have gone into breast implant. But a lot of anime girls has exaggerated boobs. I think it's part of their pop culture. Me I like the DOA girls.

I'm not excited about XIII-3. But if the graphics is more beautiful than the first and has a new battle system, I'll get it used.

I'm having so much fun in Dead Space right now, i'm playing it for the first time and it's on hard mode also I'm only using the plasma cutter. Currently on Chapter 7, there were times when I almost give up and thinking I'm gonna use all of the weapon but I'm glad that I did't quit on Plasma cutter. Fight the boss in chapter 6 with no more ammo halfway thru, glad I figure out the technique. Also I did sell my 2 health packs just to buy an extra ammo. How desperate am I? Hehe. Loving the game. Now I have an idea how I'm gonna play The Last Of Us for the first time.

homura,

I'm also playing Dead Space & I'm loving it, playing late at night, lights off, with my Sony surround sound headset with the volume jacked up high.
And with lack of sleep for over 2 days, it kept creeping me out.

I'm actually on my third straight playthrough right now.

The first time, I went all the way through with just my Plasma Cutter too(got a trophy for it)& but I used plenty of extra saves.

But I made a mistake & didn't realize until 2/3 of the way through that I could kick those green flashing boxes for goodies(and 1 baddie).

On my 2nd play-through I went for trying out all the weapons, but not using any self-generated saves what-so-ever.

But again I made another boneheaded mistake.
I didn't realize that the last "Cleared save" the game gives you at the very end of the playthrough allows you to start the game fresh, but with everything you've already accumulated.

So I'm now on my third & final playthrough in 4 days(should be done in a couple hours), and I'm doing it right this time, LOL.
I finally used my last "cleared save" to start the game from the start, with all my weapons, nodes, & extra's intact, making no saves….& I'm damn sure kicking every one of those green boxes I can find.

Then I'll be getting freakie-deakie with Dead Space 2 later today/tonight.

Cool read! You guys are bringing it all back. Truly an epic game. The first Dead Space is the best. The atmosphere is unrivaled. You guys are hardcore going through with only the plasma cutter. DS2 is also very good and you'll notice it's more nimble so you have a lot to look forward to. Such a cool universe and the story is very interesting. Hearing they are making DS3 has me excited for more story in this universe.

biker,

That 1 baddie in the green box, hehe, those designers are brilliant (tricky bast*rds) hehe, I'm also playing it at night, lights off, but i'm using an amplifier with two decent speakers so it's not surround but still delivers thumping sounds. I have 2 saves, one is my back up where I still have a lot of money just in case I can't move forward anymore but I've realized I could just sell my plasma cutter for 50k, just in case I really need lots of ammo. Because one time in the game I arranged movable things by kinesis just to create a division to buy me some time escaping from those little crawlers cause I'm low in ammo and health, now I always pick up things using kinesis before going into corners just in case, in order to conserve ammo.

crusader,

I usually play games for the first time in normal mode but when I played Dragon Age II in nightmare mode and had a good time, it did give me the idea when I inserted Dead Space " this a horror game, might as well experience it in its fullness". halfway thru the first chapter or the end of it, I log out, and checked the trophy list, that's when I saw the plasma cutter only trophy, so I tried it as well, now I'm having so much fun. I don't usually check the trophy list when I'm playing games for the first time. Glad I did.

homura,

I sold my Plasma cutter for $140,000 cause it was all node-d up, but then I has misgivings about getting rid of it & I promptly bought it right back(at a huge frigging loss I might add). And then I had to go through getting all those damned nodes all over again, what a PITA that was.
And about that Plasma trophy, I never look at the lists till after I'm all finished so it can't/won't effect or alter my main game-play, so I was actually surprised when the trophy dinged.

BTW, I got that $30,000 Deng Treasure trophy & parleyed her into $720,000 by using using a trick I found.

Anyway, my favorite parts of DS were all those free-floating, anti-gravity missions. And my worst nightmare was trying to use that cannon to blow up the striking asteroids, I must have helped blow up my planet 20 to 35 times each play-through.
But I was perfectly fine using that very same cannon later on, on that giant funky star-fish that was doing a face-sucking rim-job on the outer skin of the planet.

CrusaderForever,

I'll play some games just using the original or primary weapon alone, & if I really like the game enough to play it 2nd time, then I'll try out all the other weapons & finally settle on which ever weapons work out the best for me.

As for DS2, I'm liking it & the enemy are a hell of a lot quicker, but I'm not getting the same fear element vibe as much as I did with DS1(IMO, very close, but no cigar).

Anyway, I'm now playing DS2, and I'm at the part where the bakers dozen of baby "snatchers" were trying to gnaw away at my kneecaps.
But lets just say that they wound up with pacifiers up all of their little rug-rat a$$es…quick, fast, & in a motherflocking hurry.

biker,

hehe, i'm still halfway in chapter 7, the damage is the only fully node in my plasma cutter and in my rig suit the HP is the only fully node.

Like you I don't usually look at trophy list at my first play of a game but luckily I did take a peek at the trophy list of Dead Space that day because if not I would have used every weapon available for me. hehe.

Cool, I have been playing all games on the hardest mode. Usually there are trophies tied to it and it's a great challenge. DS1 and DS2 however I didn't play on hard just normal. I may go back but it's something that would take a lot for me to do. Creepy games are great that's for sure.

@BikerSaint

Yeah, DS2 is a lot different than DS1. I noticed that in the demo right off. I also noticed that the enemies come from a lot more different areas than DS1. I remember the baby area and it was creepy. The Subway was cool as well. You got a lot of cool moments coming up!

***spoiler alert??****

Not sure how far, or even when I'll get out of it, but I've got myself totally stuck inside the church near the top for the last hour+ cause of those super-Speedy Gonzales ostrich-looking thingies that have been henpecking me to death, ripping both of my arms off & beaking my head apart.

And then, having the audacity to drag my dead, limp, sorry-a$$ed, carcass across the rotunda.

(Anyways, I just retraced my steps back over to the store & since I didn't have much credit, so I had to settle for the pulse rifle to try again cause that plasma cutter just aint cutting it. They're way to damned fast for it).

Wish me luck cause I'm tired of being looked at like I'm some wild bird seed.

CrusaderForever,

Yay, after buying, trying, & then selling 4 different guns to do it, I finally was able to use the Line Gun on them & I finally got through those damned birdman-rapter looking things.
After that, the rest of the Church was smooth sailing.

I'm already in chapter 7 now & guess what? I'm now stuck again fighting those same damned flock of rapters but in that boxcar warehouse now.

But this time I'm not faring as well cause even though I still have my Line Gun & Plasma cutter, I'm almost out of ammo(4 shots between both guns) And this time, I can't even backtrack to the store to resupply myself like I did with them before.

YES, but I found that even with it, I've got to get the timing down just super-right.

Because just a 1/8th of a second off & I can say bye-bye to my engineer lifestyle.

And they're so damned quick that so far melee'ing them hasn't been been helping so well, especially as these never-ending scenes of re-wind keep on displaying both arms ravingly ripped from my now-ridged remains of rigamortis, R.I.P.

I'm still cranking away at Darksiders 2. I'm playing it in the hardest mode and have come into some fights that have proved very challenging, which pleases me. I'm about 20 something hours in and the game just offers so much content, especially when compared to most games coming out these days.

If anyone is looking for a meaty SP experience I think DS2 is your best bet. Also in that 20 hours I have only encountered 1 real bug so I think I have a blessed PS3 dipped in the river of styx or something. I haven't run into any freezing or bugs that others have run into.

Other than that I'm putting some time into Guild Wars 2 on the PC and I'm not really into MMOs anymore but this game has me hooked for the new direction its taking MMOs.

I'm eagerly awaiting Borderlands 2, and Dishonoured.

PGU:

Around level 35-ish in Rainbow Moon and playing the SP campaign of Starhawk on mercenary before jumping in to the multiplayer goodness. I'm having a blast with the single player and, while I see how the story feels somewhat tacked on, I actually enjoyed it. Almost time to jump into the 'meat' of the game!

Also just downloaded the Sleeping Dogs demo and the DUST beta so I have to check those out in the next few days as well…
