If You Don’t Like Uncharted, You Need Help

Over the years, I've learned that when it comes to entertainment, there's just no such thing as a universally appealing product. No matter how good it is, you'll find someone somewhere that just doesn't like it.

And of course, that's a testament to the subjectivity involved in all entertainment. But every once in a great while, a video game – or game franchise – comes along that makes me say, "if you don't like it, there's something wrong with you." Included on that list are classics like Super Mario Bros. , Tetris , and Pac-Man .

Brief tangent- the more complicated games get, the more chance they contain something that may not interest someone. When they were simpler, there was one concept…if it was fun, it was fun.

Anyway, getting back to the subject at hand. If there's one title this generation that is just too damn good to be ignored, and too damn good to make someone go, "meh, don't like it," it's Uncharted . I keep thinking Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception could be the greatest game of the past four or five years, and in all honesty, who wouldn't like it? Seriously. It has action, adventure, romance, humor, thrills, and suspense. And you can bet that Naughty Dog will have the technical elements nailed down tight.

So just for fun, in the most lighthearted manner possible, I say you're a little tapped in the head if you don't like the game. We all have personal preferences and you may prefer other titles more, but everyone should be able to appreciate Uncharted 3 , and everyone should be able to find at least some entertainment in this awesome package. But while we're on the subject, what games do you think most everyone would love? The ones that border on "universally awesome?"

Uncharted is simply amazing. So far ahead in so many categories.

Uncharted is pure, unadulterated fun wrapped in one of the best stories in videogame history mixed in with some of the most talented voice actor around. This delicious cake is then topped of by some of the best graphics this side of the PC.

If you do not enjoy it I do believe there are help centers for people like you.

I lent Uncharted 2 to a mate… He played it for two hours, said it was like Splinter Cell and that he didn't like it. I sadfaced. Damned CoD-ites. But then, he does need help. I'm saying that right now 🙂

Uncharted is just like an action movie , transplanted into a game. The new Indy, if you will, and what's not to like in that?

As for universally awesome, I'd throw inFamous in there. Who wouldn't find that fun? That's about it really.

I was about to mention this very thing as a friend of mine did something similar. He thought the opening stealth sequence was the game. GAWD

Just like Splinter Cell…?

Well, maybe he was referring to that craptastic mess that was Conviction. That'd be more forgivable because most of the stealth was gone and it was in third-person. The similarities end there of course.

…yes, he still needs lots of help.

Nah, he's never played Conviction… Stuffs me what he meant, as even the opening sequence is action-y. :/

I have almost the exact same story as you. I loaned my copy of Uncharted to my friend because he didn't have any games to play. He gave it back to me the very next day. He said he didn't like the controls and the third person layout.

He said it would have been better in first person with COD controls. I threw out a few expletives and told him he lost his mind. Oh well.

Ben I do agree that Uncharted is an awesome series and that to not like it is a longshot, but to say "anyone" who doesn't like it is touched? I think that's a bit of a stretch. Some people just enjoy the simplicity of a platformer or the challenge of a puzzler and yes Uncharted HAS those elements, but it's not JUST those elements. Now if you were to replace "anybody" with "hardcore gamers" then I could agree with you. If you replaced "the game" with "the story" or "the technical standpoint" then yeah I could also agree with you. But just the case of "everyone" or "anybody" makes me have to disagree. And trust me, I do hate disagreeing with you because a lot of your points are very valid.

I think, in this "lighthearted" manner it's okay to say anyone and everyone meaning all gamers.

Technically speaking, there's likely to be no one-size fits all game, even Uncharted (which is a most excellent series in my eyes) – and if one were being serious, then you could suggest that saying if peeps didn't like something they would be crazy is trying to force the world in our image (even if just talking about gamers – I could imagine hardcore Sims fans might not be into Uncharted, as some hardcore strategy fans might find it not there thing as well), but Ben made it pretty clear he was just saying it as a lighthearted bit of fun :). Those stories of action gamers not liking it are just plain disturbing – goes to show how narrow people can be in what they like/dislike!

For me, I'd find it pretty strange for a console gamer to not like Uncharted, but then when the first Uncharted came out it only got average reviews (on average – although strangely enough everyone including most of the original reviewers thought it was a best-in-industry game by the release of the second – which just goes to show that it takes time to change people's minds, and that change is slow ;)).

As much as I know I'm gonna get thumbs down for this, I do see Halo & Gears as "universally appealing" to most people. As far as PS exclusives, I'm drawing a blank (save 4 Uncharted obviously). Ben, I know u won't give me a hard time about Gears at least 🙂 God of War 3 seems close unless you have a weak stomach. Metal Gear would lose out due to peoples short attention spans. Never seen anybody shy away from Tekken, but that's Multi-plat now. Guess you could throw Arkham Asylum up there as appealing in some way to all. I mean, who hates Batman?

Gears maybe, not Halo. But then, both suffer from the sci-fi setting as that doesn't appeal to some.

Nah, see I love the look of Gears, and it deserves props for helping out with the pop 'n fire genre of action game, but it controls like a thick large turd sliding down a slope. It does. It's not being unfair. It's slow and lumbering. And only Bethseda can get away with locking the cam to the player's back. I wan't my action games ACTION-Y and fast!

Halo is closer than Gears in terms of universal appeal, IMO. Just because it's a straight sci-fi setting and a FPS.

I do prefer Gears but that's me. 🙂

Universally appealing to most people?! They're both very much meathead shooters – and games that I'd personally enjoy, but I know a tonne of gamers who reckon they're pretty average (including many who had a 360 before a PS3). But don't forget that gaming includes racers, puzzlers, strategy (and real strategy, not just top-down action games like Starcraft ;)), RPG (particularly around here :)), flight, platformers and so on. Gears and Halo are pretty limited in what they do, in the scheme of things, no matter how well they do it.

WorldEndsWithMe

I must admit, I never liked Tetris.

I think the folks who don't enjoy Uncharted have patience problems. They can't imagine doing a puzzle or doing platforming between the action sequences and shootouts. For them it has to be shootouts 100% of the time and I worry about gamers that can only game that way because they are missing out on some of the best entertainment ever made.

The only thing I need to debate is whether I smash Uncharted 3 into my schedule when it releases or just wait for Xmas.

I think the inFamous series should appeal to all as well. You don't need to love superheros or superpowers, the plots are really good and the gameplay is universally addictive.

Edit: And the LBP series. I can't stand any game that looks to be directed at kids but if LBP doesn't melt your heart and show you a fun time then you are the Tin Man.

I think i might book myself in to see a doctor then, as i am clearly tapped 😉 Sh!t joke aside, i love the Uncharted games & will be grabbing Drakes Deception come release day.

I agree with this article in a way as i feel the same way when it comes to fighting games. For example, after playing VF5 Final Showdown last year i thought to myself "What possible reason would there be for a fighting game purist not to appreciate in Final Showdown? It has great visuals, sound, balance, indepth mechanics & a plethora of replay value & custumisation options" & when i do hear people say that they don't like it i question why because i truly feel that there is no reason not to like this game if you call yourself a fighting fan other than perhaps it requires a steep learning curve. So yeah i feel the same way but in a different genre.

Overall, a good read. Not many sites have the hairy swingers to write an article like this. None that i know of anyway.

I know some dudes who don't like VF because it's too technical, too complicated etc. I couldn't call them purists but those who skewed more towards dramatics. The MvsC lot.
VF is awesome because it's incredibly detailed, refined and carefully tuned in balance. Though, the VF series had always struggled with visual flair and appealing attitude. The game has horrible one liners and arguably the blandest character designs. I like the 80's guitar riffs and stuff personally but I'm sure there's many who don't. Anyway, at the end of the day its about competitive depth and mad skillz. Nothing in gaming has ever been more rewarding to me. It's one thing to think your good against AI in any game, but it's an entire different world when competing against human logic. Endlessly entertaining, and the only real way to gain understanding of how good you actually are.

Kevin555
Kevin555

@Temjin,

Alot of the criticisms i hear are about the character designs being too bland as you said. But to me, in Final Showdown in particular, that is a moot point now with the sheer amount of customisation you can do with each character. Just have a few looks at some tournament vids & you will see Sarah looking Geisha, Aoi looking like The Grudge or Ju-On & Kage looking like Ryu Hayabusa. You can basically transform a character with the use of skin colour, hairstyle etc. So anyone who doesn't like the default designs can alter their characters at their leisure. So personally i don't find this a real issue.

Also, during the console announcement interview they mentioned even more customisation items for DLC. So character appearance shouldn't be a problem. Considering SEGA are always tinkering with this game releasing versions A,B,C etc it is surely only going to continue to improve each upgrade.

My only real complaint with the console release as a whole is that there will be no spectator mode but if fans beg & grovel enough they may include it in before release. So i am hopeful.

I agree with you though that really, it's all about the gameplay & to me nothing is more fun than learning with a character & taking your skills online against human competition instead of unforgiving AI. But mate, some of those Korean players are ruthless!!! You've got to be on your game.

I look forward to playing you.

I think gaming has become so broad and in many ways dare I say tainted by mainstream marketing and big studio mentalities right now that the idea of universally appealing titles just doesn't exist like older classic games.

Uncharted is a brilliant experience of this generation. In the end though it still has your basic shooting mechanics at it's heart, many many people just don't relate to that, at all.

I enjoy the original Uncharted more than Among Thieves, too. The setting, the story, the characters… all better in the first game to me. Obviously the play mechanics, especially the CQC, are better in the sequel, but the original game is just more appealing to me.
