Is There Any Hope For Resistance 3?

Not from a quality standpoint – I remain convinced the game will be great – but just from a financial/sales standpoint.

Look, the entire world is caught up in this Battlefield 3 / Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rivalry, and it's only going to heat up over the next couple of months. Both are shooters. Both come out within a couple weeks of one another (October 25 for BF3 and November 8 for MW3). Both are seeking to push the envelope in the FPS genre. With this much hype, and the chances that both will be excellent, shooter fans will likely want both.

Furthermore, we'll likely be bombarded with footage for both titles until they launch. And that means the expectations will be through the roof; the fans are expecting nothing less than jaw-dropping. Now, where the hell does Resistance 3 squeeze in? Its only hope is that it'll be ready on September 6, a good month and a half before Battlefield 3 arrives. But is that gap big enough? Shooter aficionados are probably preparing to drop $130 on BF3 and MW3, and if I've got my finger on the right pulse, those same gamers are skeptical of R3. Way too skeptical, I say, but oh well…

And of course, Insomniac's new title is exclusive to one platform, which automatically limits sales potential. So when you consider the entire picture, I really have to worry: can Resistance 3 survive? Will it thrive? I'm concerned that even if it turns out great, the gaming world's gaze will remain fixed on BF3 vs. MW3, and R3 will just sort of slide by unnoticed. I really hope it doesn't happen (Insomniac deserves the love), but at this point… I mean, nobody will shut up about BF3 and MW3 and it's only July .

R3 better hope its significant head start is good enough to carve out a niche for itself. Oh, and it better be really, really good.

Resistance 3 is a completely different beast to anything else releasing. From a heavy story focal point, the old school weapon selector, non-regenerative health, everything about it screams that it will be different from the big hitters. I don't care what people have to say about the other two, because Resistance is getting my money first, and maybe only. BF is looking good, but I want to play the Bad Company games to see if I like them first, and CoD isn't on my radar.

Of course, R3 will be criminally underrated, and will underperform in a massive way, but such is life. If Sony had released it in June or July it would have been much better, but alas.

I've heard that Battlefield and Bad Company can be pretty different.

I'm with Lawless. It's Resistance 3 on Day 1, Battlefield 3 maybe after Christmas and Modern Warfare 3, meh.

I've heard the same, but they should still be somewhat indicative of the feel of the gameplay, yeah?

lawless, for a lot of players who played bf2 and then the bad company games, there is a rather big difference

Thanks for that aaron… guess I'll have to rely on you guys to tell me how indicative BC is to BF3.

indeed and don't forget Resistance 3 will also release bundled with the PS3 gun, camera, move and nav for 149.99 for people who didn't get these yet. Plus it will also be bundled with the sony Playstation 3D tv 😀 It has lots of ways to show off.

Well Resistance 2 pretty much killed everything unique that series had going for it. And everything they've shown of Resistance 3 has looked somewhere between bland and terrible. So, no there's no hope for Resistance 3.

Your right about R2 especially the MP. But it seems to me from what I've seen they are going back to a lot of those great traits R:FoM had. We shall see! Still day 1.

I was quite surprised when R3 actually impressed the Resistance haters at IGN, and since they were the ones to do the junket with Insomniac at Comic-Con I think that bodes well. I wasn't impressed with the demo but it was super restrictive so let's just hope it's all its cracked up to be.

If you want to start unlocking things for Resistance 3 early on head over to http://myresistance.net/global/ to play "Global Resistance" a free online companion strategy game where you choose a human or chimeran commander and have at your friends in a war for global domination in the world of Resistance.

Yeah, Temji, they did. A 9.3.

I get the feeling that they'll hate R3 in the review. It is, after all, more like the original, and they only gave it an 8.4.

You should read their article comparing Resistance to 'The Road'. You can tell that the writer actually has a true love for the series.

Perhaps there's hope for us all then. But don't watch the movie for The Road, it's awful.

Oh Ye of little faith. The original resistance was outstanding. One of my favorite shooters of all time in fact. And sure they took a bit of a risk with the 2nd game but according to reviews, both were pretty slick. Those who doubt insomniac are foolish. It's a developer that continually offers great games even when a series is nearly 8 entries long and strong. If u people are really that skeptical, wait for bens review then make ur decision I know one thing is certain, r3 will get my money long before cod does.

Im all over this and BF3, no room for COD. R3 is a totally different animal, and I'm taming this one.

Well they already have my money since I pre ordered R3 as soon as BestBuy allowed. The demo looked great to me and I loved 1 and 2 so this was a no brainer. I've never played a single COD or Battlefield game and honestly I rather shoot aliens over people any day.

This is what happens when so many FPSs hit the market, some get overlooked. It's a shame because R3 looks really good, much better than R2, and much more interesting than some typical military themed FPS.

I honestly think that Insominac is wasting its time releasing Resistance 3 this holiday season because BF3 and MW3 will completly inundate it. I think they should postpone its release until next year.

@lawless: The games from all those companies besides Sony and a few games from EA, I couldn't care less about. But like I have said before, we have to do something now before things get worse and I have been gaming for almost twenty years, I'm not about to let gaming become a greedy, dirty piece of sh** or collapse again. Hopefully there aren't going to be a lot of suckers like you that accept anything even if it's a fu** you to you. This is why all these crap methods have happened, because of suckers like you.

@WorldEnds: It's the principle. If I buy games with any of the greedy methods, the greedy methods will never change and it will only get worse like it already has. Excluding content from games on purpose just to release as paid DLC, locking content already on the disc just to release the unlock "code" for an extra fee, charging for DLC that should be free and now online pass. If suckers like lawless keep buying/supporting the games that have those methods and not say anything about it, that you can't delete game save might actually happen. Hooray! SUCKERS!

I have to agree with amonte but pointing out that people are sheep may not be the best way to go about getting people to see your point.

Use the DLC example. Now we got stuff being pulled for DLC and pre-orders as the norm.

Final word! No one post after me! /eye roll lol

I'm getting Resistance 3 on day 1. Not even really interested in MW3 or BF3. I've never really been a fan of FPS but Insomniac makes amazing games. And I don't understand why so many people liked the first Resistance but not the second. The only two major differences were the weapon wheel and the health system. The weapon wheel didn't seem like a big deal to me and

*possible spoiler*

Hale probably didn't need health packs in Resistance 2 because he was turning an his healing power was getting stronger

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

I liked R2 better, but the missing weapon wheel was lame. R1 kind of dragged on and on but R2 had a continuous cool story.

World, I agree about R1. I forced myself to finish it. It was good, but not great. I played it late though, well after Uncharted, and Infamous, so I got to liking trophies, and top notch graphics and story, so no trophies and not a great story for Resistance made it a 3 star game for me. Still finished it though, and want to play R2.

They had something similar to it in Unreal tournament 3. Couldn't get used to it. Can't wait to try the beta.

If there is no hope for R3 then it''s R3's fault and noone else. The videos I've seen so far the graphics look outdated and stale. You simply do not release a fps like this with an outdated graphics engine. That's suicide.

I may be wrong, it may turn out to look absolutely fabulous, but if so then those videos released so far is doing it a *huge* disfavour.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

You should speak to IW, treyarch, and activision concerning outdated engines.

Beamboom
Beamboom

Why? The topic is R3. I'm not saying they are the only ones delivering (what seems to be) sub-par graphics.

All I am saying is that against the likes of Frostbite and CryEngine you stand very little chance of success with graphics that looks like screen shots from Half-Life.

I even believe that mw3 will have a tweaked engine that will look impressive in at least some aspects. One should not underestimate the outcome of three studios working on the same game.

sorry bro, im not seeing the same horrible looking screen shots you are. Its no killzone 3, bf3 or crysis 2 but i cant list too many other fps games that look better graphically.

After black ops came out looking worse than MW2, i wouldnt count on MW3 having some huge tweak that makes it stand out graphically.

They are not *horrible*, by all means. They just are not impressive, to put it that way. Also remember that a small video screen usually makes the graphics look *better* than they are.

Hey I hope I am wrong here, cause because of the coop mode this game offer it's probably going to be bought by me regardless of the graphics. I just am not an optimist in these regards.

Regarding MW3 I believe they feel the competition much stronger now than they felt when Black Ops were created, and act accordingly. I expect mw3 to be pretty darn good actually. One should never underestimate your enemy. (I've preordered bf, not mw btw :))
