Odds, Ends, Bits And Pieces

I really can't settle upon a decent topic for this week's editorial, so it's time to dip into the grab-bag of odds and ends.

Medal of Honor is great, but…

I'm in the minority when it comes to Medal of Honor and while I will defend it against critics who don't seem to be reviewing the same game, the short campaign still bugs me. Everyone says multiplayer isn't hurting anything and that it's better to have a 5-hour campaign and awesome multiplayer these days, but I'm not so sure. The number of people who would greatly appreciate a fantastic 15-hour campaign with a solid storyline and great character development is higher than developers believe. And if multiplayer didn't exist and all resources could be dedicated to single-player…well, you see where I'm going with this. Just saying.

GT5 better not miss 2010

Even the most die-hard fan might get pissed if gets pushed too far. I understand the apparent need for the delay but really, it's all starting to chafe. Yamauchi can apologize all he wants (it probably isn't even his fault this time) but in the end, gamers only see a date…or lack thereof. No good. Just release it.

Not a nail…but a bolt?

Had a bolt the size of my little finger taken out of my tire today. …had no idea something that big and blunt could even puncture a tire…must've run over it on the highway or something. Amazing that it only resulted in a slow leak. Weird.

The PSP has cool stuff, you know.

All sorts of RPGs, for one. I've been seeing a lot and let's not forget about the new God of War . We often opine the loss of traditional-style role-playing but we should be specific: it's only dead on consoles; on handhelds, it can still be found. Cladun: This is an RPG is a good example of that; try it if you haven't already. Oh, and I have to give ZHP a shot…I've got the code. Just been busy.

I forgot…weddings are a big deal

In my own insular little world, I had forgotten that weddings are like all-weekend extravaganzas now. And if you're in the wedding party – as I was – there's like…a lot of stuff to do. Not that I minded in the least; it was for someone I've known since I was about 6 years old, so I was happy to do it. Still, the whole thing gets one thinking about a million different things at once. Hard to put into words, really.

Maybe I'll get Fable III

I liked the first but missed the second, and depending on when GT5 comes out, I may have time. Then again, I also want to play Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and of course, there are a ton of reviews waiting…we'll have to see. It's just that, besides Gears of War 3 , I can't think of anything I want for the 360 and I've been looking. Forgot Fable III is out this month. Hmm…

I'd like to buy Fable III, too…if I could just be motivated to play Fable II first.

Everyone tells me not to play Fable 2, even though i loved Fable:TLC. I'm just happy i can get Fable 3 for pc so i wont have to borrow someone's 360.

does fable 3 for pc run on windows 7? i want to assume it will but i dont follow the pc gaming much. i dont own an xbox but would try fable on my new computer.

Seeing as how the PC requirements haven't been released yet, at least I haven't found any, my guess is that Windows 7 should run it with no real problems. Most new games are adding Windows 7 support now that it's becoming more widely used. Windows 7 runs Vista games also by the way so you should be covered no matter what.

If you are running 7 you have no worries. Well, as long as your hardware is powerful enough.
But yes, 7 will run any modern game.

Is free a good motivation? It's currently free on the Marketplace. But you have to buy it through the website, not the console (they charge it there, pretty weird). http://bit.ly/aSO7Ed <- here you go

Strange, NoSmokingBandit.. I got it, and so did a friend of mine, through the website.

I don't have the space on my 20 GB hard drive for Fable 2 and I'm going to be too busy playing New Vegas next month anyway. Amazing how people go gaga over free stuff. About the only time people rejected free stuff was that time they giving away free New Coke at Atlanta's Fulton-County Stadium.

Hey, was just trying to help. Free (good) games are always welcome on my book.

Fable 2 isn't crazy good, but it's fun.

I am with you Ben. I wish just once that a developer would ditch the multiplayer and put all eyes on an expansive Single Player campaign.

I remember when games were worth the price tag and developers didn't cater to the A.D.D. riddled populace. Let's start a petition.

The whole 5 hour campaign thing is the main reason I wont touch a Call of Duty or pretty much most shooters. Killzone 2 I still haven't finished being that I started on the hardest difficulty and I'm not great at shooters. I hear I'm at the end though.

And yes GT5 BETTER make it 2010. I have been holding off on buying another car game awaiting its arrival.

And on another note I just got accepted to the LBP2 beta and I'm psyched XD Can't wait for it to finish downloading.

If you can make it through elite in KZ2, you can start saying you are at least decent at shooters. The last battle is not an easy one on any difficulty.

killzone 2 on elite wasnt bad at all. the only problem i had was that tank on the train, everything else was fine. played hard mode 2 time and elite 2 times, not because i wanted to though. i beat elite mode the first time and got platinum but i couldnt sync trophies before ps3 broke. so i played hard and elite again after i got my ps3 back. i actually found an exploit against the last boss, i think i told jawknee about it.

Its just that I get slaughtered online usually. I can play campaigns pretty well. I'm on the second floor when you're getting ready to fight the guy who turns invisible. I just get swarmed. So I get frustrated and turn it off. Maybe I should go back sometime to finish it sometime soon.

it's a shame that linear experiences can't have more length to them… it seems like a lot of games in this style are quite beatable in a dedicated day…

the best linear experience with depth this gen is the uncharted series… it probably averages out to 10-12 hours… and probably quicker for those who play the hell out of it… but, i don't understand why these other linear action games have to be so short…

and since this topic is random, i though i'd ask a random gaming question… are one of you reviewing new vegas?? if so, when can we expect the article, and… how much fun are you having so far?

I read the Medal of Honor review over at IGN and couldn't help but have a chuckle. Almost every single gripe they had about the game coincided with what I see in MW and MW2. It was like they were reviewing a CoD but without the liberal CoD bias.

It sounds like GT5 won't be too far in the offing, but since it doesn't affect me I can only sympathize with my racing brethren.

I'm pretty happy with my PSP (especially with Crisis Core) and am slightly upset at all of you (especially LV) for not telling me it has a video out jack the whole time I was complaining about having to play on a tiny screen or on-the-go. I hope VersusXIII has a battle system similar to Crisis Core, because even though it is action based it still calls for strategies, utilizes gear and spells effectively, and tosses a bunch of monkey wrenches into the battles so they aren't just hack hack block.

Never got a flat tire, never wanna have one.

With Weddings, I think people are retarded for blasting away thousands upon thousands of dollars on them. If I ever marry it will be a simple ceremony, unless I hit the lottery or something.

I liked Fable, but not enough to get a 360 for FabII, Fable 3 hasn't improved in the graphics department one iota and sounds kind of bad to me because from what I read it plans to give you a short adventure and then switch over to you just being a ruler who schmoozes people to win them over to your side and then give battle orders like a strategy game. Not for me.

Also, it has become abundantly clear that I am drinking wayyyy too much Dr. Pepper these days.

It has a video jack? I've mine for years now and never knew that!

frylock25

are you guys serious about not knowing about that video out jack? that resistance game on there uses it to play on the tv with a dual shock. it was a major selling point of it. either way that cable to hook it up is only like $20 and WAY worth it.

when you hook up that cable to the psp and tv you then hold the video button for 5 seconds i believe and it switches to the video output. just for reference im talkin about the one next to the music note that looks like a little tv on it.

i was just teasin my buddy that the human body is like 85% water or something, well he is like 85% dr. pepper. ha ha now i want a dr. pepper…

Typical wedding these days on average is like paying for a year of college: between 20k and 40k. But unlike college/university, people are driven to delay it for that reason. And considering the divorce rate, it's astonishing how many people who are left with nothing except with unshakable bills as their only reminder of the past.

I didn't know about it until I bought my PSP. I hope it works on more than just Resistance (thought I think that's the only game that lets you use a DS3) cuz I wanna play RPGs on my TV. I just bought the cable over the net, should be here next week. Squeeee

frylock25
frylock25

the video out works on anything you do with your psp. doesnt have to be in a game or anything you can just display the xmb right on your tv. the ds3 is the thing that is tied to resitance. that is the only game i know of that does it. that video out is just a function of the psp and will work no matter what you are doing. also like on my set up whatever goes into my tv comes out my stereo receiver in 5.1 (7.1 if i had 2 more speakers)

I agree that the cost of weddings is out of control. But this one wasn't too bad…I think it had the illusion of being crazy expensive without actually BEING crazy expensive.

And besides, I think it gives us all a little hope and happiness. Sappy as that may be, we sorta need that every now and then.

Shams
Shams

Quite true. For that reason that's not the kind of conversation i'd make with someone who just got married, or is planning to in the near future.

I myself, rather would put the money to the my wife's necessities, like a car, college bills, nice ring and dress, and have a "quaint" ceremony and reception with the people who matter…and a even a prenup.

A couple months ago, my parents went to one in Boston, where the uncle of the wife rented out the entire top two floors of the Hyatt, to see the fireworks, and traffic was rerouted by the police from the hotel, as well as security stops to check people for id, invitation, or reservation. The uncle was feeling generous after he sold his company to Cisco for 2.3 billion dollars. When all was said in done, i think he could've just bought them couple a house or two.

Last year, when i was overseas, i went shopping with my cousin for his brides ring and jewelry set. I saw the bill for just that, and it was as much as my college loan was. And over there, weddings take place over many days. The rented two floors of a hotel for the celebration, and an entire building for the reception. And there were more people there than we knew, i'm sure, and more food and drink than all the people could even eat.

Talk about a deterant and a half.

20-40k is a year of tuition in the states?!?!?!?!

Your tuition rates are out of control! Is there no government support!?! Geeze, I went to a PRIVATE university and that was only 11-12k Canadian a year! Public is only like 6 or 7k a year for most!

My wedding was under 10k when all was said and done.

GT5 BETTER COME OUT THIS YEAR or I WILL BE PISSED. I been waiting out on getting a racing game waiting for GT5( I did not get MOH bc of GT5).
I bought Dirt 2 when it was about a month old, it's a great game but only a GT game can keep you playing for that long and a GT game can keep you playing for years(until it's sequel). I should go pick up GT5p to get warmed up and satisfy my needs until most likely a very early dec release.
I do have RDR to play. I have beaten all the missions but a game got saved on top of, so I had to start all over, this time I'm shooting for 100%. oH yeah and I want to get the platinum trophy for Uncharted 2.
I guess I have stuff to do before GT5 release, maybe the delay was good… ? It is good, PD do what you have too and get it out to us
… BEFORE 2010 IS OUT!

GT5 countdown; ends Nov. 30 – Dec. 8

Ben, if you haven't played Orange Box, yet, i highly recommend it for anyone looking for an engrossing fps single-player experience. Half Life 2 and episodes 1&2, three years after the release on the consoles, still remain as my most memorable fps experience…even with playing the "buggy" ps3 version (which wasn't noticeable bad). Actually Portal holds that honor for me, but Half Life games that come with it rank right after it (talk about getting your buck's worth).

Shams
Shams

I know you weren't so hot on endorsing it because of the overblown bad press it got for being a miserable port handed off to EA (and Newell's commentary didn't help). But I figure that after enjoying Bayonetta, you'd reconsider playing the Orange Box.

For sure. It was basically the reason why i'd bite my lip during Newel's trash-taking days. Portal was perhaps the most revolutionary game i've ever played. And i'm absolutely psyched about Episode 3/HL3, even it doesn't come in the next two years. Plus, from what i hear, we'll be using "Aperature Science" tech in it, if you know what i mean. Oh yes, and the credits-roll music for Portal absolutely is my favorite vg song.

I tried getting into Fable years ago when the first released. I couldn't get into it. I liked the narrative and the unique folkish vibe (sort of) but I dunno. I tried the Fable 2 demo and it was mostly nice and some unique charm to it. Ultimately, for me, it's been one of those "maybe someday I'll get around to it when I've got nothing better to play games" but, that time hasn't come and I don't see it coming anytime soon.

Gears 3, yeah, I'm game. The first Gears was probably the first game I played at the start of this console gen that really made me say "WOW, this looks way, WAY better than everything before it"

And yes, GT5 better make it this year. If not, it'll make my GotY pick difficult.

i once had to have an allen wrench removed from the tire of my mustang. no clue how it got there but it was a slow leak. didnt even take it out just went to the closest place that would fix it. its actually pretty common to have bolts and random crap catch in your tire.

Allen wrenches are not useless. I've had blunt objects puncture my tires but no leak. Would just notice the problem, pull it out and patch the tire myself. That's the problem when using high speed tires on regular roads. Damn DOT and not keeping the roads clean.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Allen wrenches are useless. You'll never find one in a real mechanic's toolbox.

Power drills don't fit in every area. Also, Allen wrenches are not just for that application.
