Your Top 5 PlayStation Moments

Such a category is immensely subjective in just about every way; hence, the title " Your Top 5 PlayStation Moments."

I'll be kicking things off with my top 5 moments from the three PlayStation eras. As PlayStation is celebrating its 15th birthday , it only makes sense to pay homage.

5. Uncharted 2

It's a moment in and of itself. I loved the first but the sequel took everything to another level; a level I honestly didn't expect to see from video games just yet. With Hollywood-caliber performances, almost unparalleled visuals, and an adventure that was beautifully paced and a pleasure from start to finish, Naughty Dog outdid themselves. I have to say it's my favorite memory of this generation. For the record, I'd also like to add that I really like the addition of demos to the gaming world…if we had had the opportunity to sample before playing from the comfort of our own homes 20 years ago, that would've been amazing .

4. Nailing down 200.6% in Symphony of the Night…without looking at the map

I suppose quite a few people managed to net the maximum map coverage in the best Castlevania ever, but I'm wondering if any have managed to do it without once looking at the castle map. It requires knowledge of every last secret area, plus hoping you utilized the wolf well enough in the water to open up the tricky spots. Still one of my favorite games ever, I didn't really plan this feat; it just sort of popped into my head one day a few years after it came out. I play the game at least once a year and I realized I really didn't need the map, anymore…the only question was whether or not I could get absolutely everything without double-checking. Well, it has been done. And I reveled in that end theme song afterward. 🙂

3. Wandering through Liberty City in GTAIII

In all honesty, I wasn't sure about all the hype. But when I got it home, I just started to wander around and explore…and I will always remember that. It was a living, breathing world, the likes of which we really hadn't seen up until that time, and it just kept getting bigger and more dynamic as one continued to explore. I think I spent hours just driving around looking at everything. It wasn't like the MMOs that already existed; it was a modern city that actually felt like a virtual city. Today, it would appear dated and archaic but Grand Theft Auto III really did something special, especially for me.  Just so mind-blowing.

2. Taking down the WEAPONs in Final Fantasy VII

When I first played through it, I was only interested in exacting revenge for Aeris' death; i.e., Sephiroth had to go down as fast as humanly possible. But the next time through – and every time through after that – both Emerald and Ruby needed to die. It required a lot of time, patience, and a good deal of checking guides and FAQs, but it was oh so worth it. And don't try to tell me all that Chocobo-related work for Knights of the Round was possible without a few hints; it was just way too obscure; especially the breeding part. Of course, you can beat the WEAPONs without KotR but I always wanted to be all powerful in my RPGs, so it wasn't an option. I needed to be a God.

1. The perfect save in Final Fantasy Tactics

Now, bear in mind that this is my definition of a perfect save. For me, I maxed all the Job classes with the five characters I would always have in my party (not maxing every Job for every character in the game, which is entirely pointless), did all the side-quests and found all the secrets (Nelveska Temple, Deep Dungeon, Cloud, etc.), and of course, made my party invincible and diverse. Technically, a couple Wizards with Math Skill and some Mimes are probably the most powerful, but what fun is that? No, I wanted to take advantage of the Job variety and still be unbeatable. It actually took me some time to get the exact save I wanted. 🙂

Now, what's yours?

I don't know what order to put mine into except for number one.

Getting 3 perfect files in Sonic 3 & Knuckles on Sonic Mega Collection + (Sonic & Tails, Knuckles, and Tails, all super emeralds found), fully completing Kingdom Hearts (and like, 99% of KH2, I couldn't be bothered to level up pointless summons), unlocking the full dragovian armor in DQ8, defeating Nine-Tails in Megaman X Command mission, and of course…… Legend of Dragoon. Anyone who reads my posts knows I'm obsessed with it, and obviously for good reasons. I play the game at least once a year, like Ben with Symphony of the night, and my overall time always gets better. My combination of Dart, Rose and Haschel never fails, and I always get one step closer to mastering all of their additions. I truly adore that game, and unless FFv13 is the absolute masterpiece I hope it will be, LoD will always be my favorite game.

1) Purchasing ps1 with Gran Turismo
2) Multiple playthroughs through Legend of Dragoon and Legend of Legaia (on ps1 & ps3)
3) Getting a ps2 with GT3
4) Being able to play online multiplayer for the first time via the PSN
5) Using the ps3 for more than games: online browser, music player, blu-ray player

I'll just say my #1 experience with Playstation, was when a female gamer I met playing online got on the PSN chat and pleasured herself for me.

So hard to choose but I'll try.

5) Finally leaving behind the idea that Nintendo or Sega would ever dominate my gaming world again and embracing the PS1. The N64 and Saturn got sold off after that.

4) Realizing that we had actually reached a point where home gaming consoles consistently beat out arcade games in graphics. Although this led to the ultimate demise of arcades, it was a telling PS2 moment.

3) GTAIII, like Ben said it was a living breathing modern city in which I could do whatever I wanted no matter how horrible. This game introduced me to what real social gaming is, not some multiplayer over-the-internet crap but a few guys passing the controller around between drinks and bong hits to see who can get the best police chase going.

2) Getting my PS3. Sure I was like 26, but I asked for it for christmas for a specific reason (besides being a broke college student). Opening a gaming system on Christmas has always been a fun moment, and my PS3 made me feel like a kid again, if only for a moment.

1) Final Fantasy VII, it had been a while since I had been into RPGs. Or games for that matter, a couple times in my life I spent time away from games just living life but when I played FFVII it changed my life. No kiddin' round. It made me think a lot. Ever since I can find wisdom and philosophy in just about anything.

Thank god consoles hit a point where Arcade machines were inferior.

Was never into the whole Arcade scene at all. It wasn't fun at all, wasting a lot of quarters, and the games were purposely made to be twitch-gaming experiences. Sorry to say but some games were made to empty your pockets as quick as possible. Though the fighters were legit, most of them anyway.

World, you should have kept your Sega and Nintendo hardware as collector's pieces.

I think you sell them off at a decent price today. Collectors love these old machines, especially if you had looked after them. I understand though, you may had to sell them to get into the PlayStation world…

Arcades are one of the main reasons I plan on moving to Japan. I wish we had more of them in the states other than those complete excuses we have in the malls. But the Arcade to me was a place where you could go and just be surrounded by seeming like minded people.

5 is just way too short of a list…

1. Playing MGS1, breathtaking in every sense of the word

2. Burning the streets of Gran Turismo (all of them)

3. Street Fighter (no need to say anything else)

4. Final Fantasies (minus XIII, that's not even a FF)

5. ps3 and its games, it's just a whole new level beyond anything seen.

1. Getting all of the licenses from GT1.

2. Finishing FFVII after playing on and off for 10 years (school got in the way).

3. Giving up on SNES for the PS1.

I greatly enjoy the completion of any game. However, my top 5 moments are hard to choose but I'll give it a rough guess.

5. Gallivanting around in GTAIV doing exactly as I pleased. This can be traded out w. the wide open expanses of RDR (similar experience)

4. All the crazy kills from Call of Duty multi-player, – Challenge: "Omnicide" – Kill entire team within 10 seconds. – (no camping :)) Gas Mask (kill enemy with throwing knife while blinded by flash-bang) no scopes, M9 30kill max in free-for-all etc.etc.

3. KZ2 bridge combat in the campaign. Very intense, definitely a great time. Best AI of it's time and a total blast

2. Heavy Rain completing it discovering a bunch of the story branches, getting to know the characters and really getting into the game

1. Tough call, but I will have to pick one of my favorite games and spending all the hours delving into the incredible story and amazing adventure of Uncharted 2.

The completion of MGSIV or FFXIII both belong somewhere in the extended version of the list.

The first Tomb Raider when you see the alien that mirrors your moves. I remember seeing it and started shooting and my wife said somethings killing you and it was me shooting the alien that was priceless, also when the dogs came through the window in RE.

Wow, what a toughie.

I think the absolute best time was the day when I finally got my PS3-Slim.
My phat-PS3 died in November of 2010. When I finally had enough free money to buy a replacement PS3 in February/March( I can't remember which month) I couldn't find a PS3 anywhere. They were so scarce. Gamestop even had long waiting lists. I routinely made phone calls to stores such as Best Buy with no luck. Days went on… After another downer round of phone calls, including Best Buy claiming nothing would come in for days, I decided to go to Best Buy anyway just to check out all their stuff. And to my complete and utter surprise they had a whole isle lined with PS3 Slims–an unexpected direct drop shipment. I was so over-joyed I walked around with a PS3_Slim in hand with a huge smile staggering around in disbelief.

Another great moment was beating one of the United States top 100 ranked Tekken 5: DR players online (I think he was lvl 81). It was a complete random match-up and he had a few thousand more matches under his belt and a great winning average. After a long 5 round match, I came out on top with the win WOOT!!! Too bad my respect for the guy went down the tubes when he sent me a hate-message for having beat him =p

rossinator, doh, my cover is blown and my flux-capacitor is broken. suck =/

Shams, Heihachi is my main man. I'm okay with several others, too. While I've been playing Tekken since the original, T3 at the arcades is when my competitive years began. At our local arcade I competed in a couple T3 tournaments taking 2nd and 1st place respectively for the two I entered. Having gained employment at this arcade I was no longer allowed to enter future tournaments, but that didn't stop me from training a friend of mine who went on to take first place in a following tourney =p

Granted, the general diversity and skill level of the typical Tekken player back then is generally not nearly as good as many of the PSN players I fight with. I really should give T6 some more time, there's a lot left for me too learn. All these other dang games are so distracting.

Shams
Shams

You totally deserve the title "master" then. Actually, something higher than that, like "sensei" or "seephu". By the way, Heihachi is pretty much the hard-hitting style i liked, though I tended to use Kazuya more so in T5:DR. I liked Dragonov, and Law, and I wanted to learn King, but discovered that Tekken was taking we too much of my time, so sadly, i left it 🙁 I never got around to playing T6. What's your feeling about that one?

Temjin001
Temjin001

Yeah, Heihachi is a greet blend of speed and power. I also tend to prefer more direct fighting styles over the exotic ones of someone like Eddie etc.
I like T6, overall. It's great seeing the characters more detailed with all the kind of effects we're used to seeing from this gen of console–but what's with the low res? The animation is smoother, expanded moves list, and there's a healthy increase of characters to the roster. It's definitely a Tekken game.

T6, however, went a direction I'm not a big fan of: heavy emphasis on elaborate juggles. Basically, fighters that put too much weight on memorized button sequences that happen after a launcher are less my style. T6 definitely went more in this direction. Granted, it's hard getting much more than 70-90pts of damage on a single juggle outside of special and rarer circumstances, but I prefer the more balanced and down to earth approach in games like VF, the non-tag-SF games, and various prior Tekken installments.

None-the-less, Tekken 6 is Tekken, and it plays and feels like one. Namco has traditionally tinkered with combat formulas, often finding and refining what works best from the past and combining it with the new to make future installments. I'm sure T7 will fit their M.O. nicely.

Off the top off my head…

-hearing Prodigy's Firestarter in Wipeout XL for the first time

-that scene in MGS 1 when that old guy hits Snake with his cane and you feel the Dual Shock vibrate

-beating my first Colosuss

-riding around in my Bike Deebo-style in San Andreas

-Finding out who the killer in Heavy Rain was

What an amazing 15 years.

A few PS1 games you could put into a CD player and listen to the music – Wipeout XL, Jet Moto, Destruction Derby and a few others.

Shams

The Wipeout franchise is one of my biggest reasons as to why i heart the ps brand. XL was by far the most nostalgic experience. Not to underrate the other experiences…it's just a measure of how much i love those games…Uncharted 2 did for me on the ps3 what the Wipeouts did for me on the ps1.

Temjin001
Temjin001

Yeah, Shams I played WipeOut XL on the PSX until my eyes strained red. I loved the game–and where is it and T3 on PSN?!
I still like WipEout a lot but I feel the series sort of stagnated after XL. I didn't play 3, and Fusion was different, but I still liked it a lot. Then the series went on a several year hiatus.

WipEout HD is awesome. I just wish the game had some larger more open tracks. I think my twitch'n abilities just aren't up to snuff these days as I can't help but bounce into walls more than I'd like.

Shams
Shams

Once again, Sensei Temujin, my thoughts echo your own. I loved Wipeout. I adored XL. Wip3out was still awesome, Fusion might as well had been from an entirely different franchise, but was pretty fantastic. Pure was as much a return to the series as we could expect, and was my reason for picking up a PSP. Pulse was my first multiplayer addiction. HD/Fury was my secret reason for opting for a ps3 (that and the other sleeper hits that Sony is known for bringing to the table). Alas, we didn't get a disc-full release, but it still ranks as one of my favorite games this gen, and they were plenty of other titles that thankfully won my heart.

The game requires a lot more practice than the previous iterations, requiring tweaking the control settings, and a broken-in controller, and a lot more accuracy and timing. But being a Tekken champion, your reflexes are more than sufficient.

Tekken 3, after wipeout xl, also saw the most time in my ps1.

Yeah, maybe I should tweak my controls. What's your favorite vehicle class? The game can be so fast.

I really wish for a full-blown WipEout; I'd love to see in-cockpit view–though, it'd probably limit viewing too much.

Shams
Shams

My favorite ship throughout the series probably was AG-Systems, however, Piranha in XL, even being weaponless, was of course the beast, and the best. In HD/Fury, i currently prefer EG-X, but Icarus is of course the choice of weapon for setting new records. AG-Systems is still rad, and shape is a hidden stat that it also has going for it, as you can pass it through chicanes more easily. Goteki-45 is pretty insane, too, because of it's best acceleration stat.

Cockpit view is definitely most exhilarating (especially when performing roll-boosts), but since it's harder to gauge the distance between your ship and the edge of the road, it's a harder to do combat while negotiating turns, but it's an advantage if you wish to set records. For multiplayer, i prefer close-up version of 3rd person view.

Shams
Shams

Keep the airbrake (l2 and r2) buttons sensitivity settings to 0 or close to it (which actually means keeping them most sensitive), and do the same with the acceleration button (x) (though i think the setting works inversely or opposite in the buttons case, meaning you have to boost it to 100% if i recall correctly)….other wise your fingers are going to hurt after long sessions, especially if you controller isn't broken in.

Oh, yes, and you may want to enable the motion controls for tilt, in certain situations. I know that for me, it was absolutely necessary for the beating-zico trophy.

5- Playing Twisted Metal 2 at my friends house, it was my first experience with Playstation.

4- Getting 100% on Crash Bandicoot. It was the first game I owned for PS, and it took me, my brother and two of my friends about a month and a half to get 100%. While we were in the process of getting 100% we would have the game and the memory card with us at all times just in case.

3- Buying a PS2 at Sears with my own money that I made working 20 hours a week at 5.15 an hour. That was a good day. I took it home, hooked it up to my 13 inch TV I had in my room, and played Gran Turismo for hours.

2- My best friend and I were huge resident evil fans. RE came out in 1996 and the story of RE was set in the near future when it came out. So one day we pop the disc in and start a new game. We absolutely freaked out when the intro came up and it said July 1998, because at that moment it was July 1998.

1- MGS. It was easily the best experience I've had with playstation. No other game has sucked me in as much as that game did. There was just so much to do that it never got old. There was always something new. It also has my favorite boss battle(with Vulcan Raven, running through the big crates). Hell, I wasted hours just messing with the guards in the very first part of the game.

I noticed I don't have anything from this gen in the list. Its not that this gen hasn't been good or anything, I just have much fonder memories of gaming as a kid than I do as an adult. I think I just look at it differently. I still love to game, just not as much as I used to.

When I usd to throw parties I always set up a room with a big screen where we would have unofficial tournaments. I had a club level sound sytem for the music and I would disable the ingame music in the and raise the sound effects crazy loud. It was madness. Lose a match pass, the controller. Street fighter! Then Twisted. In more ways than one

Talk about having friends over.

Yeah, GoW3 was a huge deal. It ranks real high for me, too.
I have to say both Uncharted 2 and GoW3 were some of the more recent big wow moments. Largely because those were the first two games to really make me say, "WOW" again for the existing console generation. It's almost as if a newer more powerful console launched inside of the PS3.

Tough, very tough to think just 5. Yet here goes.

5) Playing FFVII and heading to Jeuno for the first time. I thought to myself"That is one BIG Cannon." I still chuckle when I think about it.
4)In Legend of Dragoon finding out who Darts father was. I was like O M G! That hit me from left field.
3)Parasite Eve…The battle on the Nimitz….enough said.
2)FFVII….Aeris death……(sniff) I hit me hard and I still remember it clearly to this day.
1) Tomb Raider……T-Rex battle…….O.o! I did not expect that and it surprised me greatly.
