With so many RPGs hitting in 2010, including one of the most anticipated titles of the generation in Final Fantasy XIII , there's a good chance we may all have to reshuffle our lists significantly before the year is out. But for now, what's your favorite role-playing game of the generation?
It'll be interesting to see the responses. I know I've been talking a lot about Lost Odyssey lately, but that's mainly because I'm sad to see turn-based disappear and LO is the last console RPG that used that old-fashioned mechanic. It didn't have the best graphics in the world and the actual storyline wasn't too fantastic, but I really enjoyed the setting, the characters, and the extremely awesome combat mechanic that kept me coming back for more. However, being a fan of great writing in games, I should also add that the Dreams really stood out for me. They still represent some of the best writing I've ever seen in games; each one must've been professionally written by an accomplished scribe. It's weird that the same quality didn't really come through in the actual storyline, but whatever. The whole game was maximum fun from start to finish.
Then there's Dragon Age: Origins , which certainly occupies the #2 slot for me. I normally don't like that type of RPG but this one got me from the start, probably because the battle system reminded me a lot of Final Fantasy XII . I liked the challenge of it, I liked being able to build my character from scratch and watch him grow, I liked the D&D-style environment; I just really liked it all. I never did finish it – Assassin's Creed II sort of distracted me – but I put a good 40 hours into Origins and I certainly don't regret it. I will have to buy the sequel when it arrives and although I keep hoping for a Lost Odyssey sequel, I'm pretty sure it ain't gonna happen. 🙁 All this being said, I really do expect to love FFXIII, despite some skepticism I have for it; if it doesn't supplant LO as #1 on my list, something went terribly wrong.
I should probably try Mass Effect 2 although I hated the first one; any game that gets such high review scores really can't be entirely ignored. I also want to give Resonance of Fate a try, although I'm not so much into the futuristic gun battle thing. Okay, so what's your fav RPG of the generation so far?
The only ones I've played so far are: Folklore(demo) That music-y one (forget the name, again demo), Infinite Undiscovey (briefly), Lost Oddysey(also briefly), Dragon Age(briefly, but i plan on getting into it some time), Demon's Souls, and WKC. Out of these, I've spent the most time on WKC, but Demon's Souls provides more of the challenge… Overall I will have to say WKC, because I haven't even come close to getting tired of it yet.
musicy one would be Eternal Sonanta which I enjoyed but didn't have enough time to finish before I went abroad :/
Man, comments like this just drive me nuts!
Most will know ive been hugely anticipating PS3's best JRPG thus far, WKC and comments like this are making the wait so hard lol
I got one more week left and then it's all mine….
Well since WKC never arrived in my mailbox *Shakes fist at the Heavens* I have to go back in time and say Fallout 3 has been the best, it sucks you in and won't let you go. Dragon Age is a close 2nd though.
Fallout 3? after all that Oblivion I say u playing?!
Oblivion is great, but F3 is still the better game. 🙂
I ordered a game from someone off of ebay and completely forgot about it until I got it a month later. I almost bought the same game twice, then remembered and dug the email address out of the trash bin, but before I got around to inquiring about it, it showed up. I haven't purchased anything from ebay since then.
Like World am also for Fallout 3.
@ WorldEndsWithMe:
What is that game / movie you're holding in your avatar?
*Definately* Fallout 3. Thank god I'm not alone in my opinions around here, for once. 🙂
Best mmorpg so far, regardless of generation: Anarchy Online. With AO I count playtime not in hours, but in YEARS (hence my avatar).

wiiplay: It's a katana, I think. He's planning on carving his eyes out. Or cutting his hair, maybe 😛
Yeah that's my sword, I'm using it as a mirror to count the enemies behind me 😉
never cut the sexy hair! chix dig it.

wait a minute i forgot about Oblivion and Fallout… But I don't even like Fallout. I only like Oblivion because of the almost endless freedom though… Still WKC.
I love WKC. I'm half way through the game, it sucks that the custom character doesn't get to ride his own knight. They better give the custom character a bigger role in the sequel.
Can you make a female godsman?

Come on World, where've you been? Not only can you be female, you can size the assets.
Where have I been? I have been waiting for the bloody game to show up and it ain't comin. I'm bringing the hammer down very soon on this guy.
I feel your pain. I tried to buy Demon's Souls from a guy and he sold it to someone else instead.
I gotta give to Demon's Souls so far. But I haven't played WKC or SO4, yet.

I haven't really played many RPGs this generation. I'm a huge fan of the 2D Era RPGs and the more advanced generation RPGs don't really grab me.
Dragon Age REALLY did it for me though, and I might pick up WKC sooner or later.
Ben
The reason the dreams in Lost Odyssey stood out from the main storyline so much is that they were indeed written by a seperate novelist. Such brilliant work.
I would have to say Lost Odessey has been my favorite RPG this generation so far.. but I truely love the look of FFXIII. I personally like the approach they took as I don't usually like breaking away from the main story until the end of the game anyways. And from the sound of it there will be plenty to do when the main story is over.
On the subject of WRPGs.. I tried.. I really did. I hated Mass Effect and got very bored with Fallout 3. I don't think I'll be going down that road again any time soon.

I knew it had to be a different writer. SO good. 🙂
WKC is my favorite so far.I'm not getting FF13 so that will not change it.Despite the reviews,I am enjoying WKC immensely.

What's your reason for not getting it? Just wondering…
1.) Fallout 3
2.) Dragon Age
3.) Oblivion
4.) Eternal Sonata
5.) Folklore
That's of the ones I've played enough of to judge them, I won't include Valkyria Chronicles because it is pure strategy. I expect WKC and FFXIII to take those top two spots, or at least I hope so.

My top 5 are:
1) Oblivion
2) Eternal Sonata
3) Demon Souls
4) Borderlands
5) Fallout 3
gotta go with Oblivion. The game is just so massive and great!

definitely has to be borderlands.
i normally hate cell shading but it actually suited the game, and gave the area a airy feel.
hope they do another one but this time lay down on the enemies please?
it gets so frigging annoying when im trying to collect something but cant because every time i stop to grab it i have a million enemies trying to kill me.
so i kill them, there is no one left, so i go back to collect the item and magically another million enemies magically spring out of thin air.
thats what destroyed borderlands for me, well that and the 3 game saves going corrupt on me.
i can handle having to redo the first 10 missions twice, maybe 3 times.
but 4?
i dont think so.
i would have to pick WKC, i have played many rpgs, and i didnt like the wrpg, but this wkc although the gameplay reminded me kinda like oblivion but its very good… i brought the game since lauch and have put 3 hrs into gameplay… cant waitil i get to the online portion =) the reason is because i have a kid and a wife lol n now my son n i are both sick =(
I'm gonna have to go with Final Fantasy VII. I think the download on the PSN counts as this generation. If not oblivion or Fallout 3.
P!

For some reason I can't suppress the feeling that he copied your sig just to force you to use it again.
My favourite RPG of the generation?
I'll have my answer in the year 2011 because that's when I played all the RPG I need to.
I agree. Demon's Souls is my current favorite, but other than White Knight, nothing I can really remember playing actually captured any interest.
I don't have one yet ;(
I'd have to say Fallout 3. I haven't gotten into WKC yet, and I cant play borderlands because some kind of glitch that nobody else has.
I cant tell you how many hours I have invested into Fallout 3, but all together it is probably around 300-400 hours. It is a fine game.
(and I still need one more trophy!!)
@ Jed (and general)
Just a quick question regarding Fallout 3 GotY Edition; is it really buggy and unplayable (or practically) past a certain point or in general? I ask because it certainly interstest me and I've read and heard good things about it overall. I've considered getting the GotY Ed. and may still when it's at a resonable price point for me.
However I figured I'd ask here since I'm a member, I tend to value many's opinions here and quite a few have listed this as a fave (or one of) as well as having becoming very familiar with it. Feedback especially concerning this aspect would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
a friend of mine play the got-edition of fallout3 and has not encountered any problems with it so far. However he's only half way through the main story yet. As for me I've installed all the expansions on the original fallout 3 release, no problems here (apart from the original glitches that comes with the game).
Alright, well thanks for your input Beamboom. I may indeed pick up the GotY Edition when it's less expensive. Although reading from a few other sources the possibility of major glitches (mostly) occuring once the main storyline ends and venturing into the bonus/dlc quests begin does worry me. I know Bethesda's games tend to be massive in scope (especially considering all of the content that gets added afterward) but I wish they'd take a little more time to fix/squash the glitches/bugs. Thanks again.
I've never been an RPG buff, but I'll get around to at least one. Valkyria Chronicles looks very interesting, but I have to wait for the oncoming high tide of AAA titles to cease first. Depending on the Ben/Arnold's review, I may even go for FF13. And I would've played MA2, but I never played the prequel, so I figured I would have to do that first. For now, though, I'm having too much fun with R&C:ACIT, while not at RPG, is definitely experience that would be similar to MA. So many games, too little time…
Demon's Souls
And Final Fantasy XIII won't change that
Last edited by Scarecrow on 2/20/2010 12:39:44 AM
It will.
absolutely. Fxiii won't even scratch the surface of Demon's Souls.
demons soul all the way!
It can't change it if you don't play it.
Fallout 3.
Well, if you want to count Valkryia Chronicles then it gets my vote. Granted, it's about the only RPG I've played this gen, but it was still a really great game.
Dragon Age was amazing, the opening of the game caught me completely off guard and the game refused to let me go until I had completely finished it. It was like being date-raped by a beautiful woman.
No game in the current generation has come close to doing that. I have White Knight, but have not yet had the time to dive in head first. From what I've seen of the game though, I doubt it will change my number one choice.
Seriously looking forward to Nier and FFXIII for a nice change of pace in RPG's.
One can't help but find it sad that the genre has not had much presence on the PS3 until now, though the next few months should be more than interesting.
What? You know beautiful women need to use rohypnol when date raping.
I've only played WKC and I'm looking forward to the next installment. I hope something better comes along only because nobody wishes for something worse. WKC is good and has a lot of potential to become something great.
I guess I'm gonna have to break down and buy FFXIII when it releases just to see if I should officially hate SE or not. If I look at it like a prologue until Versus, I can probably get over the missing elements that make for a complete experience.
